Xikar Crystals
How often do you switch these out, and when do you know they've gone bad? I have two in my humidor. My battery died hygrometer, but cigars smoke well. I keep adding fluid to them and haven't seemed to have any issue, but know I've had them for years

I have the Xikar puck, and I just started using it again after about 6 months of it just sitting around. Soaked up the juice fine for me, and seems to be retaining well. Humidity is good within my travel tuppie, too.
I'd imagine (no research done or having a long experience using these), that the gel will tell you when it's done-for; meaning if it's not absorbing and retaining the water or mixture juice - then it's done. If it's absorbing/retaining, and you're h-meter is registering it within the sealed humi/tuppie at desired or mfg specs - you're good.

I did the cat litter and still do. I keep several boveda packs throughout the humidor to help control but if yours is absorbing its probably still working

I have no experience with Xicar crystals. Like Josh I have used 8# of I unscented cat litter for the last 6 years along with about 2# of Heartfelt beads with zero complaints and rediculously easy to maintain.
