I had that happen when I used a specific can of xikar butane. Any lighter I filled sputtered. Xikar custoker service had me take apart 4 different lighters and adjust the adjustment dials. They claimed the can I was filling from was a different pressure than all the other xikar butanes I used. Try a different can to fill from. I just threw out the crappy can and changed brands.

Don't shake the can either. You'll mix up the propellant and the butane.

Really? My can says to shake before filling.

There is no propellant (and for that matter, there is no air) in a butane can. There is simply butane vapor over liquid butane) Butane IS a propellant. Butane must remain under pressure in order to be in a liquid state at room temperature.

god I'm starting to hate these lighter filling threads
Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

Buy a few new Ronsons...they're like 4 bucks or less. Buy stick matches...they're cheap too. Get free matches from your B&M when you buy sticks.

I'm just a wealth of great advice this morning...

Or if you like something a little nicer (flame is still just a flame though) go with a Xikar. They are guaranteed for life and have phenomenal customer support.
