Low rh in humidors

So, I have a 2 year old 50ct humidor and a 1 year old 150ct humidor.

The 50ct has 14 Cigars in it and 2, 60gr 72% bovedas and the 150ct has 47 Cigars in it and a 320gr 72% and 2, 60gr 72% bovedas in it and the humidity wont go above 60 in either.

Both humidors held right around 64% with 65% bovadas up until about Christmas when they suddenly dropped to 60% with no changes except for adding a 320gr 65% boveda to the 150ct, and another 60gr to the 50ct.

I'm at a loss as to why the issue started so suddenly and why it hasn't improved at all with higher rh bovadas.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is causing me to seriously consider replacing them with tupperdoors...

Yeah, I will likely just get another tupperdoor to replace the 150ct and phase out the 50ct. The 2 I already have stay dead on all the time.

Just stumped as to why the dramatic change a few months ago and why no improvement with higher rh bovadas

I'd say your first problem is that both humidors aren't nearly full enough. It order to help stabilize humidity, the general rule of thumb is at least 75% full. This might sound like a marketing scheme to constantly buy cigars, but it really matters. That's too much air to be humidifying.

Your second problem is a bad seal. Go into a dark closet, place a flashlight in your humidor and then close it. Wherever light is leaking, air is leaking, too. This likely first began to be an issue in winter because not only does ambient humidity dip drastically in the winter, but wood also contracts, likely making the leaks in your humidor worse. You should see the 105-year-old wood floors in my house. In the winter, you can slip a nickel in-between many of the floorboards. They then seal shut in the summer. There are ways to fix a leaky seal, but I for one am way too lazy to mess with that stuff. I went full tupperdore long ago and will never look back. If you can't live without the look a wood humidor, buy a big one and just stick a tupperware container inside of it.

I agree with Sean full ness matters and temp matters. I have also heard but never tested some humidors will lose alot of humidity thru the bottom of the humidor as it tends to be very thin. Now TJ may have the best solution for you but not practical for most of us. Alan has a good solution too. If you want to keep the wood out either for anesthetics or sentimental reasons (wife bought my first humidor regrets that decision). 1 fill either with cigars or some other media beads or kitty litter to help hold the humidity. 2 put cigars in ziplocks in the humidors this gives a way to hold humidity but the look of traditional humidor.

Rh is much lower during the winter months and can cause problems. I agree that your humidors don't have a tight seal. Once you do the flashlight closet test, it usually takes very little to vastly improve the seal. Maybe Scotch tape around the seal would be the solution?

does the wood look dry? Winter will suck a lot of humidity from the wood. May be worth while to wipe them down a time or two to resaturate. That should help stabilize them a bit.

If there was a change in the ambient rH that could suck the humidity out of the humidor too.

All good stuff so far. I'll add that temperature effects the amount of moisture air can hold as well.

You need more cigars in those humidors (good excuse to go shopping) or combine them in one humidor.

That 320g will get you there either way, just give it time.
