No I don't mean those silly wooden shoes and the dance they do. This cigar is something like a 44 ring. I typically use a larger more standard sized punch but I decided to use the little one on my lighter that I typically use for smokes in the 30 ring and under sizes.
About halfway through I began to notice a harder draw until eventually it was becoming ridiculous. Not wanting to step off of my porch in the dark after having to deal with a baby rattlesnake the other day I found a lead that had been torn from the tree during the storm and used the end to kind of scrape off the tar-like buildup.
I used to use this small punch before I got a real punch and this was typically with 50 ring sizes, and I hadn't had an issue quite like this before when using it. Was I just a bit lucky in the past or was it the cigar?

Yup, that's tar!
My experience like that resulted in me cutting the cigar with a guillotine cutter and it smoked much better after that.

Is it merely because the hole punched into it is small?

I agree with Brimy. Cut it, do a flaming purge and smoke slower.

Same here!
I foind this happens to me if it's humid outside.
I simply cut it and get back to smoking.

Agreed!
I also only experienced this when I used a punch vs a guillotine.
I'm guessing since the punch restricts the draw more so than any other cut. As a result, when I do use a punch I will use the (for lack of a better description) "figure 8" punch. I guess a larger punch may also work.
