For me, it depends on the type of lighter. Soft flame flint lighters get the most attention. I'll clean them when putting in new flint.

Torch lighters I struggle with and I often feel it was better before I tried cleaning it. Now I just use the cheapest torch lighters (Ronson Jetlites) I can get and use them until they no longer work.

Compressed air in a can (like for cleaning PCs) works well on jets.

Soft flames with the heating element, on the other hand, are tricky as they are fragile and I've broken them before.

I got to search around for the picture where I was "fixing " a lighter on the brand new couch and made a fireball in the living room. I burned off the hair on my hand and a good chunk of my beard. Them there was the time I rocked the internal stem across the room. I dont have a good record.

I am going to be honest. I forgot about that but now that it is pointed out its kinda a duh moment. I should start there more often and not go directly for the screw driver.

Hasn't always worked for me but it covers all the basics on where to start. Had just heard a listener mention it in an email myself

While attending a high brow herf, I watched someone refill their butane lighter while an ornamental candle was burning at their table. Let's just say someone may have soiled their britches when gas overflow and table candle made a love connection. It wasn't me and I won't name names. I was far enough away to see it all, and discretely laugh my ass off when it did.
