Capacity and Volume
Needing more storage I'm looking at using an ice chest. It will likely be some time before I'd be at capacity, but I'm wondering if having too much empty space is a bad thing.
I have one ice chest I could sacrifice for storage but it's ~28 qts. Is that a bit much for say 2 boxes? I've eyed an ice chest that would be hard pressed to hold a 12 pack that seems about the right size.
I'm guessing a larger volume container would just need more Humidification?

You will want more humidification, especially if it has a lot of empty space. Make sure that you have a good deal on it. What are you using to humidify? Some brands have "how much you need" calculators on their websites.

Yes empty space is bad. I was using a large piece of tupperware when I first started and only had around 20 cigars in an old box inside. My bovedas dried up quicker than they should. I went to a smaller one and didn't have any issues. You can try to combat it with empty boxes, or as Don suggested to me at the other site fill a ziploc with air and throw them in to fill space as needed
I don't have emotions, and sometimes that makes me very sad.

The 1 and Only G.O.T
With using a larger then needed cooler it allows you to grow with out having to replace it sooner. I use kitty litter in mine and only have 3 boxes in my cooler now..boxes stay closed for the most part so its held beautifully for a while. You can also the empty space with empty boxes if its a concern.

Right now I am using a DryMistat with Xikar solution. CI sent me a HumiCare pillow I could also use in the mean time. But Boveda seems the way to go.
I can always use that 28 qt cooler if/when I need to, but I'm thinking I just need storage for maybe 50 sticks or so. I'm thinking of putting a 200 count desktop humidor on my Christmas list.

Rhymes with "seed"
Cigars themselves can act as a humidity buffer, hence why they tell you to usually keep a humidor at least half full.

You just need to buy more. All kidding aside, don't go too small, You Will fill it up. I've purchased several 50 or 100 cigar humidors only to find them too small. Now I have several coolers full and probably need another. Buy big, then fill it!

I would use empty boxes, preferably cabs to fill empty space.it will make it easier to dial in your preferred rh when you get to filling it up.
If you use beads or kitty litter Heartfelt Industries has a calculator for volume to beads ratio.I use KL and multiply the results by 2.5 times what is called for. It's not needed, but shortens the return to you desired rh level.

As the one cooler I could spare is rather large I'd likely fill it with some bubble wrap and then any boxes I ordered as I have none at the moment.
