View Full Version : How To Tell If A Cigar Box Is Spanish Cedar?

Hi everyone, hope you are all having a great weekend.

I had asked about Spanish cedar before, when some thin sheets came in a couple five packs I got several months ago. I know that many people like me using tupperdors, etc... throw these pieces in to help buffer the RH. I also know that you can break up a Cigar box made of it and use that with even better results due to it being thicker and overall a larger quantity.

I finally got my first box of stick a couple weeks ago, and planed to take it apart, taking the sides, bottom, top, etc.. and use them in my two tupperdors as dividers and also help with the RH as mentioned. As I started taking it apart I noticed there was 4 inserts around the inside aprox 1/8" as well as a cigar sized piece on the bottom to account for the bottom row of cigars having 1 less then the two above. So this got me wondering are only the inserts Spanish cedar, or is the entire box?

I am not much of a wood worker so I don't know what to look for. I tried to look up online if the 601 Blue Maduro cigars come in a solid Spanish cedar box, but came up empty handed.

Could anyone point me in the right direction, would be much appreciated? My gut says it's all Spanish cedar, but better safe then sorry.

Here is a pic if it helps
Thanks,
Chris

I pulled the sticker off the lid, that is why it has that odd looking pattern on the left side (it's just a thin layer of adhesive leftover) Should I gently sand the adhesive leftovers off? I wish I had just left the sticker on now, but at least I know not to do that next time.

Chris,
You can go to your local retailer and buy a couple of empty boxes that are made of SC. Just ask them. What you probably want to avoid is buying SC retail as last time I checked, it was higher than a Georgia Pine....

The sides of the box look to be solid SC, Dovetailing is almost always indicative of solid wood construction. The top/Bottom are typically a thin ply board with SC veneer.

Take some rubbing alcohol(preferably 91% but not essential) on a rag to it for a bit before you try sanding it. It may take off a majority of it and save you some sanding.

Thanks for the conformation guys!

I will probably leave the bottom intact and use it in one tupperdor and put the inserts, spacer and top in the other. I will try the alcohol to clean the adhesive off, I wonder if everclear would work, I use it to clean my pipes, it evaporates quickly too.

Everclear should do.

Everclear cleans everything. Want to clear your brain of something you seen, but can't forget?.....You got it!.... Everclear!....Want to forget an exwife?......you got it!.....
