View Full Version : How do you budget in your smokes?

Just curious as my job is so up and down in hours, let's say I have a couple killer weeks where I can turn a lot of hours, then pay bills, if I have some extra coin I'll start buying cigars to stock up and store. Do you actually budget in cigars or how do you financially figure them/accessories in?

Well,
I have to plan my purchases ahead of time (for the most part) and as a pipe smoker, I also have to juggle between the two (though I do have a modest tobacco cellar slowly growing). If I wasn't disabled it would probably be a little easier for me to impulse buy, but you have to play the hand you are dealt, so I make do. :stogie:

My system is not a good system. When I go to the B&M. I only buy what I can carry in my hands. No shopping basket. Its slightly cheaper then when I have a basket. The way my budget works if I am tight on cash the quality of cigar goes down. If I am comfortable then I get a bit nicer. If I were ever swimming in the dough I would stay away.... otherwise I would end up back at square one. I have slowly built up a nice stock so I dont have to worry about it much. When I was newer in the game and did jot have a stock pile I would usually go shopping with about $20 at a time. Once I knew what I liked I would shop for deals. For accessories I like to get Xikar. The warranty on them makes them excellent for the long haul. The times I could not afford Xikar I have bought cheapo and been happy.

I used to not use a system at all to keep it under control. I just kinda spent what I wanted every once in a while. It was always way less than what my wife spends on random things. I had not really bought anything this year until my promotion as I have enough cigars for the next 2 years or so.

Now I just set aside a certain amount every paycheck and only use that for my cigar funds. Seems to be working so far. It lets me snag deals I want when I see them and I can wait on anything else as I am mostly out of room in the wineador.

I work for myself and I have a similar situation in terms of income. What I do is wait until two months later, look back see how much was left over and put a little bit of that aside for cigars. For example, in a couple days I'll go back and see what came in and went out in April and split what is left over between a college fund for the kid, my wife and me. I found that a 2 month lead time helps give a cushion for emergencies. That way my wife won't get mad when cigars show up at the door at an inopportune time. It also helps me because clients don't always pay on time.

The wife and I each take an allowance every paycheck that we can use for whatever we feel like getting and the other one can't say a thing about it. I use this money mostly for cigars and shooting supplies.

I don't. I have all the cigars and pipe tobacco I'll ever need ('need' LOL, like you ever really NEED tobacco). When I didn't, I'd wait till we hauled scrap at work or when I'd sell some old truck axle or something and I'd squander some or all of that on pipe tobacco or cigars. These days I'd only come up off some cash if I saw a really cool pipe for cheap or possibly if someone here was doing a CC box split on something I really wanted (don't have many CCs). Other than that, I'm good.

Not really a budget, i basically just buy when i have the extra cash. Also always buy cigars on sale/discount. Can't remember the last time i paid full price for a box or 5pk.

I work for myself so I really never have any extra cash. I'm going to fire myself someday and hire someone to be me so I can screw off a little more before I get too damn old to want to not work. First of all, I never buy on credit and always look for the deal that you know is a damn good deal on a cigar that you'll smoke and enjoy. No sense in having cigars you don't like regardless of the price. Before you know it, you'll have a wad of nice smokes that you like. Every now and then I may buy a couple of cigars from a B&M, then kick myself in the caboose because if I would've saved the money plus a little more, I could've bought a lot more online......

I have only been buying from "overseas" lately and I mostly only buy stuff that's on sale. I have been averaging 2-4 boxes a month depending on if I am splitting or keeping everything. But this month for example there was nothing on sale that I really wanted so I did not buy anything. Next month I may buy 5 boxes now hahaha

My buying habits are so random that it would be impossible to budget. I'll go from buying cigars every week for a month or 2...then not buy a cigar for a year.

My buying is VERY random. Right now, I have purchased more than I have smoked the last few months...

Just been so busy and sick that I have not had a lot of quality smoking time. I hope to kick that trend SOON!

Usually I pick up a sticker two from a local B&M every once in a while, but I mostly buy online if I find a good deal on something I like or want to try.

I also have too many expensive hobbies, so I get quite a bit of flak if I start shopping for cigars too much.

Opps...

Budget??!! That would require me to have an income level I could count on.Maybe once a year
I can splurge online and even then it's only around 30-40 bucks including shipping. It's a good
thing I like pipes so much, cheaper and (for me) lasts longer. When I sit back with a cigar it's
a special treat, usually after a particularly hard day.A year ago the Brothers and Sister Kayla
took mercy on me and bombed the crap outa me,I still get threatning notes from my mailman,
if it wasn't for them I would be down to just pipes and probably smoking sawgrass at that.
BTW kids,I'm still working on that.Thank You !!

I don't budget although I probably should. My purchasing has dwindled a lot as of recently primarily due to no more space to store them. I'm not sure as of now where I'm gonna put the last two boxes I purchased. My income varies quite a bit so when the good months come I will splurge a little more. For the last year or so I only buy if I can get a good deal.

Even though I discovered I enjoyed cigars many years ago, I was raising 3 kids and couldn't afford cigars. Once the kids were grown I focused on getting debt free and cigars wouldn't have helped achieve that goal. Now that the kids are raised and we are debt free I felt comfortable splurging and enjoy a fine cigar once in a while. Over the last 4 years I have accumulated a nice little selection and rarely buy cigars. Only when I find something I know I will enjoy and I don't feel guilty for buying them.

I will also share that all of this took me a lifetime doing retail grocery store work and never making more than $15 an hour. It all has worked out, but damn, there were times it really sucked. Oh, and my wife always worked too.

I'm pretty sporadic in my purchases as well. I do not budget for it at all.
When we have extra cash, I'll spend a little on smokes. Other than that, when I go to the B&M I usually buy one to smoke there and one to take home.

Pipe tobacco is so much cheaper, I usually have plenty of it on hand, so I can have a smoke whenever the mood strikes me.
Cigars are kept at 1 to 2 per week.

Budget you say? What's that?!
Buying has been down over the past year since I've been lucky & won a couple of contest here (thanks my fellow bums)!! Then you have the crazies bombing you. And I did quite a bit of buying over the prior 2 years. Then there s the space issue.
I'll buy something I think is a good deal or something I really want to try. Plus Secret Santa has put me at an extreme "surlus"! Between what I've been given and what I bought to pair my AS gifts.
