View Full Version : Cedar wrapped cigar question

I'm wondering what everyone does with their cedar wrapped cigars. Do you take the cedar off before storing them or do you leave them wrapped. I've heard somewhere that the cedar wrapping can help encourage mold, although I'm not sure I believe that. I have however over the years had a number of them given to me and randomly when checking them have found a few with mold growing on the cigar under the cedar. Maybe it's just coincidence but it made me start to wonder. I don't usually have many cedar wrapped cigars but was looking at purchasing a number of them and now debating whether or not to pull the cedar prior to storage.

I always take off the sleeve before before I store it. A number of years ago I had some Gran Habano vintage 2002s mold up under the cedar and I always store at 62-65. So, always off with sleeves for me.

Well I store at low to mid sixties and haven't had an issue YET, so I think Jessie is crazy. Well not crazy crazy, but I think we need to watch him a little closer. I've noticed some little 'ticks' that come and go with him, and these ball up and become bigger problems. I'd say something like a snowball rolling downhill or sumptin' like that. Anyhow, I'm going to peel the cedar off my Double Chateau's just in case he's not as crazy as I suspect he is....

I've only had a few that had a cedar sleeve and they got smoked fairly quickly. So I can't answer to the OP.
But I will say that for me the cedar sleeve made a few great spills to light my sticks with.

Wayne, realise you're just back from a break, feeling a bit frisky, but quit teasing and tell us how" All I do with the sleeves is remove for smoking." those sleeves smoke. Would expect they'd be a Mild airy sort compared to the cigars they were wrapped around.

I've left them on with no problems, but I have heard the same thing. The first sign of a problem and they're gone.
But thanks Tracy for now making me go check......

Have heard that also, but left the Cedar sleeves on without a problem.

This: " The first sign of a problem and they're gone." Sounds like something said by Rosie Roundheels.

Got me smiling.
Thanks Tony.

With your extensive collection that could take awhile so I guess I should apologize for sharing my paranoia. I'll also throw out there that you could just collect all of them and send em to me and I'll check them for you. I promise I'll return them after I "inspect" them.

Back in the 90's "boom" days there were more than plenty self proclaimed cigar snobs. Um YES, some fools have been seen smoking cigars without taking off the cedar sleeve/tube.

The way I figure, if a cigar is going to get mold, it will get mold regardless if it is in a cedar tube.

I've seen that once before at a bar around 20 years ago. Some all knowing fool wuffing on a cigar with the sleeve on telling his buddies how good it is and he gets told that the sleeve comes off. His face was redder than a baboons azz....

I guess don't knock it till you try it... but what about that little ribbon around the foot of an Anejo? You supposed to smoke thru that too? :p

I haven't had many cigars with a cedar sleeve, but I do remove my cigars from the cellophane. I'm not sure if that makes any difference, because cellophane and cedar are both supposed to breathe.

Edit: I did see a neat trick once where someone lit their cigar using the cedar sleeve. They slid it down about 1.5" and lit it. Took a few puffs and it lit the cigar pretty well. Eventually he blew out the sleeve and slipped the remaining bit off into the ashtray.

I've got about dozen Anejos in the humidor and some of them have been there a couple years. I sure hope it doesn't hurt them.

I leave them on and use them to light the cigar.

Well you know they're all cheapies, except for those you just sent me, so not many actually have cedar on them.
But yeah, if you want cigars with cedar on them to "inspect" I can make that happen :biglaugh:
