SWMBO will be going on an all girls cruise to Cozumel soon. Since I'll be staying behind to hold down the fort I told her she ought to bring me some Cubans and rum. However, as was pointed out, there's only about a 1/10 chance of walking out with the real deal. I was pointed towards two reputable shops, but I have no idea where she will be and whether or not they'll be convenient so I've been reconsidering and figuring it ought to be much easier to get a good non Cuban without worrying about fakes and overpriced sticks.

I'm thinking along the lines of Dominican Republic as I feel an Avo Uvezian is an excellent smoke at a descent price. But being Mexico I'd think something a bit nicer can be had for the same price. As SWMBO typically buys me styx in the $8-10 range I figured that would be a good place to look.

I prefer a mild med to med full smoke. What can I likely find that's good at this price point that might compare well or better to an Avo? I figure most of the smokes I'm familiar with and like, though using Central American tobacco, aren't made for their area. But then I'm rather ignorant of how it works elsewhere.

As a side note I'd appreciate any recommendations on rum to look for. We generally buy $25-35 bottles of booze for typical drinking but will spend up to $50 on those nice occasional bottles.

Rob - sorry to be picky but we should discuss this in the Habanos section.

I thought Habanos was strictly Cuban?

I did start a thread there, but seeing that it would probably be an ordeal for her to find one of the two recommended shops or be concerned with being ripped off, I figured it may be easier to find something else.

When we were there last year there was 1 cigar shop right the main port area, but I didn't go in so I couldn't tell you what they had. Honestly though I doubt they have anything you couldn't get here or have that much better prices.

As far as rum, never had it myself but have heard great things about Flor de Cana.

If you like tequila there was a place that had a bunch of different flavors, we got a coffee one that was really good.
