Tony, looks like one of those pellet snakes (light them and they sprout a body of ash). :)

2013 Pinar dl Rio Small Batch Exclusivo Toro with Pub Roast coffee light courtesy of George B.

Better made and tasting than the other PdR SBE that I've had (all recently).

Wrapper is a shade lighter and less blemished with a nicely flagged head that looks like it will hold through the smoke. More saturated flavors and smoother. I'd buy more of these if I hadn't already smoked a few that were lesser sticks.

I haven't found much benefit on ageing Macs beyond a year or two. This one is smooth but a bit over married and it lacks the snap of younger sticks.

I'm smoking this cigar and thinking of the families of the IS bombing in Beruit that killed over 40 people last week. I look forward to the day when I smoke without the need to honor those killed by these animals.

This afternoon I had a 7X50 El Caudillio Maduro cigar.:stogie: I decided to dig thru my oldest coolerator and came across this cigar that I had smoked in my early days (2009); surprised that I still had one. This cigar came from Thompsons in my early days of returning to cigars and at the time I thought that these were very good cigars. Smoking this thing now let me know that I have come a long way; it is shocking that I had once thought these were great cigars. This cigar is absolutely nothing; not bad or good, but simply nothing.:banghead: I can say that I was surprised. I had been told in my early days by a Puffer named "Cigary" that the joy is in the journey and he was so right. I topped off this cigar with a large hot mug of coffee and the coffee was delicious.:facelick:

I like the occasional PDR Reserva Limitada, which is a dark habano, not sure how it would compare to the Oscuro. But they are very smoky, with an unpleasant "room note" according to the wife and daughter of Bruck. Normally they're tolerant of smoking in the truck, as long as I ventilate. But a couple weeks ago I lit one while taking said daughter back to school, and they made me douse it as they were about to puke.

One can find them on the devil site in the $2 range. Pretty good for the money IMHO.

Currently smoking a Brohiba. With my current batch I'm doing some experimenting with some different blends. The one I'm smoking right now is a Kentucky puro :) I thought I'd try a cigar made entirely from leaves that I get from a grower in that fine state.

Wrapper is KY-grown CT broadleaf and the binder is KY "one sucker" (a dark air variety). The filler is a single leaf of KY dark air (not one-sucker). I had to recheck my log - one leaf? Normally 3-4 leaves go into the filler of a toro-sized stick. But then I remembered, those leaves are massive, up to 2' long.

Anyway, the flavor's not bad but a little flat. I guess you just need some Hispanic leaves to make a good blend. OTOH, it's only got a few weeks' rest on it, so that might be a factor. The burn was a little rough at first, but after the first half inch or so it straightened out and is burning nicely now. & Uncle Nic definitely showed up for the party!

Between Pinar del Rio and Obsidian, Flores y Rodriguez make a lot of lines, including one under their name. I've found them to be cookie-cutter acceptable construction, decent leaf but lacking age and often similar to each other. At $4 a stick I'd pass but some are excellent budget stretchers at half the price (or less).

Obsidian Toro (maduro), with a year at 68-rh and a year at 62-rh, aged into a full-bodied, satisfying smoke. Possibly my favorite Flores y Rodriguez product FOTT anyway, I just happened to store these this way with good results. I'll age my remaining Obsidian and Obsidian White Noise this way and see if they respond similarly.

I thought the PdR Seleccion to be their most ambitious effort but it's only consistent in driving into a ditch about halfway through. The PdR Reserva Limitada seems to be a light version of the Seleccion but not as inconsistent. Both are on the smoky side but the FyR line, Genios and Magicos, were WAY to smoky for me.

PdR Classico is a solid Ecuador-CT wrapper smoke (I've spoken about it before).

2007 Macanudo Hyde Park with New Mexico Pinon coffee (light) from @Chico.Ortiz108 on a beautiful and seasonally cool morning. This Mac has more life than yesterdays but it would have been better 5 years ago. Thanks to all my Coffee Angels and their little conspiracy :).

Agreed.
I like the PDR Habano Sungrown and the Oscuro.

You can usually find them on the devil site cheap. The last time I ordered some I picked up two 5ers for $7 each. At $1.40 a stick, I'm in.
I have heard they have some stinkers as well though.
One thing I notice about the Oscuro is that it is really good (to me anyway) for about half of the stick. Then it gets pretty boring and then it gets bitter. I usually don't smoke them all the way to the nub. Usually they are set down about the time they reach the band.

But hey, it's not a $12 Padron, it's a yard gar/deer campfire stick, and a perfectly acceptable one.

This stick is a lot better than the same I had from the this sampler, better construction, burn, more flavor and smoother. I have at least one more so for the moment I must consider them inconsistent until further data is smoked.

She has good taste.

This thing, for some reason, would just not stay light after the first 2 inches. No matter how often I took long, slow draws it would sputter and die almost immediately. I wonder if it has to do with some internal issues due to the size. It was certainly not wet and I did not notice any hard spots or blockages. Perhaps the Robustos I have will fare better. The flavors in were great otherwise.

2013 Saison (Oliva) Robusto with New Mexico Pinon coffee (light) on a lovely morning that's predicted to get warmer.

My brother-in-law hosted Thanksgiving dinner so I brought the cigars, an Oliva flight sample with 20 cigars. Five smokers but 18 sticks were gone, I let it slide but my brother-in-law noticed and pulled aside one of his friends. Later my brother-in-law tried to give me $50 (I refused). Sad that someone would expose themselves to friends and acquaintances for a dozen or so cigars, low self-esteem. Very minor incident, only worth re-telling to fellow BOTL and otherwise a very enjoyable night with good food and family. Hope that your Thanksgiving was as enjoyable.

From what I hear Padrons do smoke better without any real rest/age on them. There was a post referencing an article that said Padron ages their cigars before the put them on the market.

can't be precise, but think it was about a year and a half ago when I noticed an abrupt drop in the Oliva G cigars, not sure of the size, but think a Lonsdale.
Cigars purchased from two retail shops exhibited the same lack and the wrappers hadn't the shiny look I was used to seeing. The salesman/counterman in the one shop said he'd noticed the Oliva G cigars had changed, said it was most likely do to a less than good crop. Don't recall smoking any of the Oliva G cigars since that time.
Glad you were able to enjoy the next one you chose.

Morning Bob,

Of the three Oliva Flight Samplers (robusto), one was used and stolen on Turkey Day and I'm plowing through the second currently. The Connecticut and Saison are close to what they should be but the "O and especially the "G" (as you noted) are weak. Small consolation that the Thanksgiving cigar thief ended up mostly "G" and "O". Teach that prick not to steal cigars :).

You may be right that it was a weak crop but that would mean that Oliva sells their best leaf. The construction has been as bad as abysmal. I'm not as adventurous as you guys and I tend to pay more for brands that I have a track record with. These weren't expensive, ~$60 per, (smaller) but if Oliva thinks that this is the quality that should bear their name then I can't remain their customer.

2013 Oliva Connecticut Robusto with New Mexico Pinon coffee, light (thanks Chico @Chico.Ortiz108) and a chilly morning. Better stick from this lot.

later...

My Father Cedros Deluxe Eminente ...5.6x46 Good way to start the day, but it's time to close another window or add a heater to front porch.
It had a definite soft spot an inch and a half from the foot, didn't affect the burn at all, an unusual construction (?) issue for one of these.

Aquitaine Mode 5...5x50...Neat Perfecto. Classic shape that needed but one relight, guessing the time from lighting up to the end at about an hour and three quarters.
Roma Craft certainly did a fine job with this cigar.
Old Smokey, this smoked like a dream, there wouldn't have been any need to relight if I'd not stopped to bring in and open a box of books.

On a rare good "Lucky" day you find the one excellent cigar from a bundle or box of duds.

Goes someways towards making up for the one un smoke able found in another box or bundle.

Glad you found and enjoyed this good one.

Had one La Duena Petite Lancero a year or two ago that was one of the very worst cigars I've ever tried to smoke.
Could not get pas the fist quarter inch of that. Returned the box, having declined the offer to "at least give one more a try."
Haven't found the courage to try another of them...despite hearing only good things from others who rate the La Duena highly.

Think it's time to let the Misty Miss Christy come in with Something Cool.
Likely a glass or two of something to match.

Morning Bob,

Yes, a small consolation, but more important for it's lesson.

We all know that cigars vary, to some degree, but these ranged from (about) expected Oliva quality to awful cigars so poorly made that they never could have passed QC unless intended to do so. The contrast between this last, well made Oliva "O", underscores this point.

Every cigar manufacturer will make some bad sticks but how they dispose of them tells you how they value their brand. As branded 'Oliva' (and I doubt the bands were put on anywhere other than the factory) the fault appears to be theirs. No matter what price paid, a reputable company wouldn't allow cigars of this low quality to bear their name or leverage their customers. Even if the samplers were assembled by cBid, Oliva was willing to put their label on trash (and I'd imagine segregate these stinkers before shipment).

Claims of rigorous QC are only marketing tools that have no meaning unless consistently evident in the product and otherwise it's just abusing your customers. As consumers we're the only arbiters of a company's success, so I'll smoke what I have but I'm done with Oliva.

Good Afternoon Pete,
Late getting to the Bum today, so have just read your post.
Agree absolutely that any cigar maker who puts their name on a poor quality cigar is revealing their disdain for the purchaser.
Never understood the concept of some one, especially once they have been selling cigars for awhile, releasing cigars that are not ready to be smoked when purchased. Perhaps when they are just getting going they might feel they've no choice but to sell some in order have $ to stay afloat. There can be no excuse, once they've a decent inventory, for shipping cigars that may range from poor to putrid.

Hopefully that 2013 Xikar (HC) Maduro Churchill was what a good cigar should be, good.
