Bruck, no sir, you're not alone. I have had a couple of G2's, and enjoyed both. The new G2 maduro has me thinking about a 5er
Very good... I used to keep some of those in the humi, but they're a little too hit or miss for me - they're supposedly mixed filler, made from the leftovers from the more premium lines.
And for purposes of the thread topic, I had a CLE Cuarenta during my TWO HOUR COMMUTE HOME today.

Going home, not coming home. lol
And Dustin, there's not a damn thing wrong with a Brickhouse maduro. I haven't tried the natural, but have had several of the maduros and they are a good stick.
Never meant to imply it was bad, but it's no padron by a long shot. I keep them for when I don't want a yard gar but can't decide what I actually want.
Having had both the maduro and the natural I vastly prefer the Brickhouse Maduro. The one I had last night was a bit off, however.

Graycliff 30 year anniversary.
I think I'm the only one on this forum who smokes Graycliff. Or at least admits to it :)
Morning Bruce,
I smoke 'em occasionally, even included the G2 in a roundup on CT Ecuador wrappers. Internally I think of them as the Rich Man's Gurkha :) without some of the construction problems that make for time bombs.
To me, the Graycliffe 1666 (I believe this was the name) maduro was very good. The G2 is ok and a good value but I haven't liked the Platinum.

Hi George,
I just smoked an Oliva O Robusto that I let die half way finished. I like the Oliva sticks but this one was just awful so I hope all the goodness I expected was in this one that you just smoked. Usually a very consistent brand and they control their own leaf so I'm reminded of the old joke about the Salesman and the Pumpkin Patch.

Ya had to ask :)
A travelling salesman desperately needed to relieve himself (#2) so he stopped by a pumpkin patch, sliced a hole in one and he did the deed.
A couple of weeks later, while driving on the same road, he felt guilty and decided to offer to pay for the abused squash.
A farmer answered the door and the salesman explained and offered to pay.
"No need, glad you told me", said the farmer who then turned his head into the house and called out to his wife.
"Hey Martha, I told you that your pumpkin pie tasted like sh*t"
Sorry that your Oliva wasn't great. Mine was made with tobacco grown in a pumpkin patch :).

Then burned very evenly right to the end, always appreciate a cigar that doesn't require constant attention.
First cigar I've smoked in a week that wasn't a 48 or smaller size, looked and felt like at least a 52 ring gauge.
Got this excellent,Caldwell made Blind Mam's Puff cigar from BillB in the Halloween Pass.
Earlier in the day, smoked a My Father Cervantes Cedro Deluxe Corona...5.6x44 which, along with two cups of coffee to start to this rainy day.

La Aurora Corojo corona...5.25x44...Having read several of Neverbend's posts where he was smoking these, went ahead and picked some up.
Smoked several think they burn a bit faster than some others in this size, but for me me there are no weaknesses in them.Lit this one just a few minutes ago, a case of wanting to smoke *something* but being about ready to turn in for the night, this may not be a lit burner. Nice to have an added bit of variety on hand since I do tend not to have that.

Age and a stint in the 62-rh box does these some good based on the three I've tried. Richer, smoother, more fruit and sweeter with an amp'ed nic hit. Nice smoke to be stuck in the middle of a middling sampler bundle of Pinar del Rio wares.

Hi Pete,
Nice surprise when one finds a good smoke when expecting much less from a brand.
Not so nice when you've purchased a box from a maker whose products are consistently well made pleasing cigars.
Been some time but I recall the Victor Sinclair Vintage Select, box pressed I think they were,as being every bit as good as the Oliva (G?) years back.
And most recent Oliva G having fallen from their prior level. Once explanation, and may be the most likely may be down to variations of crops from year to year.

I think the UHC is the best of the Diesel line. This fell in line with the Unlimited, but it had some age on it and felt like it might have lost some flavor.
Agreed on UHC. Have had all, except Grind, Crucible and Delirium, and none have been as good as UHC

Hi Bob,
It is nice when the smoke is better than anticipated. The Obsidian (maduro) were pretty good when I smoked them fresh but they've improved nicely with ~ 2 years of age. I'm lukewarm about the other Pinar products other than the Classico that's a pretty good (Ecuador) CT wrap.
I had an awful Oliva O (2013) the other day, stopped me in my tracks and I dumped it half way through and for me that's really rare (I fight through almost anything). I have 100 or so Oliva's (mixed) from the same buying spree so I' crossing my fingers and, as you point out, that's not something I'd have thought to be a problem associated with Oliva. Crops certainly could explain the problem but at this point (in my experience) it's just one cigar.
My time in the tobacco business makes me wary of some things that perhaps the general public doesn't fret about and that's why I might shy away from some limited production (boutique) runs when I spending more than garden smoker sticks and I stay with established brands. Macanudo is overpriced but they've been consistent for years although I preferred the Jamaican manufacture :).
Regards,
Pete

Hello Pete,
Agree 100% on the Macanudo being overpriced, offset somewhat by quality, and the Jamaicans were always nice.
Ditto the Royal Jamaicans, and I'm pretty sure there were one or two other Jamaicans a while ago that were also first rate.
Some from the Canary Island were first rate.
When in Vitoria Gasteiz where Cubans were not easy to find, the Canary Island cigars were in most shops, and
quality smokes at reasonable prices per box.
Bob.

2012 Oliva "O" Robusto with some Vegetarian Black Bean soup and water. I winged it on the soup but the wife says that it's good so that's all that matters. The Oliva's good too.
I have no idea what has happened but on the major road a few blocks from my house the sirens have been wailing, coming from all directions. I prey that no one is hurt.

Alan, the La Unica really brings me back (you did that to me with the Leonards pipe as well).
In the early 1980s, Cuesta Rey (owned by the Newman Family) had been the best of the packaged cigars (short filler and perhaps not all tobacco) but the market was changing to higher quality cigars. They introduced La Unica, a handmade, long filer Dominican and despite my initial skepticism, it was very good and became a hit for them. Soon the Cuesta-Rey was reintroduced as a handmade, long filled cigar as well.
About to finish the Oliva "O" that was quite good and I've selected a 2013 Gurkha Signature Collection Double Toro to smoke next but I won't be surprised if I'm posting that in the morning instead.

The wife and I were off work today for the holiday and she wanted to do some christmas shopping.
So I say, "Great, drop me off at the cigar shop and come get me when you're done." :stogie:
So I'm talking to the manager (who knows what I like) and he says they have a new stick in I should try.
It's a Boliver with a wide red band. I can't for the life of me remember the name of it but it was a maduro, and it was a solid stick. Very nice.

In the early 1980s, Arturo Fuente was a sleepy company, famous for their Curly Head cigars but they built a new factory in the Dominican Republic just as this country emerged as the leading producer of (non-Cuban) cigars in reputation and popularity. The mild Dominican (olor) cigars were the rage but quality sticks were expensive and bundles were inferior. La Unica filled that void.
Fuente overhauled and improved their own brand and used their excess capacity for contract work like La Unica and Ashton (introduced about the same time). Retailers flocked to Fuente who was making quality cigars across the spectrum from budget to premium.
I'm talking out loud on memory lane...
I'm halfway finished with the 2013 Gurkha Signature Collection Double Toro that I didn't get to smoke last night and on the Good-Bad Gurkha it's halfway, but not all the way, bad. Coupled with some Pinon coffee (light) courtesy of @Chico.Ortiz108.

LaUnica were bundles back in the late 90s...when I used to smoke a ton of them. I remember there were the 100, 200, 300 and 400 in both Connecticut and maduro. Prices in NY were like $2.50 to $4.50 from robusto to a big 8x50 (the 100). They were a great deal and a very good Dominican smoke. Now I see they have graduated to boxes and the 100 sells for about $7 in NY. Still worth it though.

Thanks for the info on the Cuesta Rey they were one of few brands I can recall from way back then...smoked them over a period of about thirteen years. 1951 to 1963-64. So missed the period you mentioned when they'd gone over to the packaged type. Had to be aware they were out there, but was still surprised when a
Wholesaler told me "Sure they still make good cigars." That was perhaps 5 -7 years ago. I did pick up a box of the 4.7" size, and they were ok. Tho something from Camacho in the same size was a whole lot better, got those at the same time as I did the Cuesta Rey. Unless I'm mistaken the Cuesta Rey, and another (long gone?) brand that sported a high class white and gold band were handmade, and along with Berings very good smokes. All EMS.

For me this is as close as I come to smoking something special to mark a certain date or event. And, yest it was a fine smoke.

Romeo and Jullietta cigarellos today (org). Mild and good draw but IMHO a little lacking in flavor.
Desperados, still really like these cigarellos. Nice vanilla taste and mild. Love the fact it last me from when I leave my house till I get to work (25 miles).
Gran Habano #1. Nice toasty taste and a little punch to the ling but not as bad as the #3's.
Waiting to get home now (2nd shift worker) and I think I will have a good stick, just undecided till I get in front of the humi to see what calls out to me.
Hit a Acid blonde the other day and my taste have changed because it just tasted bad to me. So I lite up a Isle del Sol and still like those for a quick cheap smoke. Also had a juicy Lucy and I have to say it had so much flavor it was a bit overwhelming, not going to smoke another.

Those earlier cigars from Cuesta Rey were indeed very good on a par with the Berings, lot differing in taste. Priced exactly the same I think.
Not sure of the names of the varied sizes of either brand, as I recall the prices of either brand went some where along this line 20 - 40 - 60 - 80 Cents.
One thing I do recall clearly is that the next to highest priced were a lot better than their largest, which I'm pretty certain was a Churchill, tho cant recall the exact length and ring size. Back then the Corona size was a big cigar, Lonsdale Panatela (Lancero?) were more of a Gentlemans afternoon/evening smoke with the Churchills being
being the attention getters. Lots of Perfectos. The Claro Claro or double Claro were the Green Cigars, much more popular then than now, tho not selling anywhes as many as the EMS. Think the Philadelphias,White Owls, Dutch Masters and El Productos were the big sellers.
Keep wondering if that other, white and gold banded cigar might have been a Perfecto Garcia., or Garcia y Vega. A couple of other brands that I do recall from about that period were Marsh Wheeling, White Ash and House of Windsor, which I thin were a Philadelphia cigar.

I like them. I've had about 10 total. Med to full body. Good strength. Sweetness and spice and black coffee... A little raisin/molasses on the cold draw. Burn is good. Draw is just a little tight. Good amount of smoke. I get 30-40 min out of them. Also they are fairly inexpensive.

I'm smoking a 601 La Bomba that I got in a trade with Sean_The_Evans a while ago. Very, VERY enjoyable, though I get a feeling I might have let it rest too long and it doesn't strike me as quite as "explosive" as most reviews make it out to be.
Despite the wide availability of cuban sticks in Spain, I often wish we got some of the amazingly broad NC variety you guys have access to. There are some VERY interesting NC options out there...

Glad you're enjoying it. Very underrated in my opinion. You can get them on Cigars International (Nica Libre [NEW] - Cigars International (http://www.cigarsinternational.com/cigars/75423/nica-libre/)) or they are on cbid all the time. That one I sent you is the old label. The packaging changed last year but I believe the blend was to remain the same. I can't say either way as I haven't smoked any of the new label yet. But all in all, Nica Libre is a fantastic maduro that is generally available for $2 to $3 any time you want it!
