Yup, a big reason I don't enjoy the Pro Football as I did in the past. A number of NY Giant players would often come down to get in a half day of fishing on the Party Boats here, after having breakfast in a local diner before going out on the boat. Later they'd spend some in a Bar here. Regular guys. Times when you knew the names of everyone on the team, and those names did not change as quickly as now.

Yeah, I remember those days. That was the way it was for all sports during that time. Athletes have really cashed in on free agency. At least the Cubs have a large market and we will see how deep their pockets are.

Gulp, congrats to Cub fans everywhere. I saw this coming 2 years ago with all of the young talent they had in the wings.

My little brother had an apartment in Valley Ranch TX basically across the street from the Cowboys training facility back in the late eighties, early ninties. Needless to say, a lot of the roster that played for them lived there until their fate was decided. My son and I would jump in the 300ZX and drive down there almost every weekend and we'd play water volleyball from Friday night to Sunday afternoon. We met some very nice people. Those were some fun times! It's wild how fast the years go by. Hell, my son was around minus ten years old, and now he'll be forty in March with four grandchildren he's blessed me with....

2012 Pueblo Dominicana Torpedo with iced water on a cool but lovely evening.

I hope that the nuance comes through in this (too) long post but I'm smoking a favorite stick to celebrate my daughter, Elisabeth, achieving a personal milestone after an odd day.

http://www.autocarkr.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/2016-Subaru-Forester-release-date.jpg

Last year, Elisabeth was a new RN and she decided to buy a 2015 Subaru Forester (all-wheel drive) so that she'd be able to get to work in inclement weather. We went to GP, a Subaru dealer and were assisted by a pleasant young chap but soon, James, a Sales Manager, took over and he simply wouldn't stop talking .

James decided that my daughter HAD to buy an in-stock, low mileage, 2013 Impreza stick (she does drive a stick) but when he began to brow-beat her, I admonished him and we walked out. I don't hold a grudge and this past April, after my wife was rear-ended and her car totaled, she bought a Forester from GP (James no present). Our salesman was Roy.

Elisabeth was off today and we returned to GP to finally buy her a Forester. I asked for Roy but it was his day off and after about 15 minutes of waiting, Vicky was 'assigned' us. I explained that we knew the car, having purchased one from GP in April, but we wanted to see the 2016 features and to test drive their driver-assist 'Eye Sight' option. I told Vicky that if the price was right she'd sell a car today. Vicky showed us the new features but she needed to find a car to test drive 'Eye-Sight'.

James walked past us and spoke to the man in charge of floor sales. Vicky disappeared, ostensibly to find a car to test drive. James walked by again, stopped and engaged us, clearly recalling us and the night that he tried to sell us the Impreza.

"You missed a great deal on that Impreza, sold it early the next morning, just as I said it would."

"Really? I received emails for several weeks afterward saying that the Impreza was still available.", Elisabeth said with some surprise.

"Computer generated emails.", James answered. "Is someone helping you?"

"Yes, Vicky's helping us", I nodded.

"No, Vicky has something else to do, Jean will help you". James smiled and moved on.

Vicky walked past and I thanked her for her assistance.

"Yeah, right", her resentment didn't seem to be directed toward me.

I repeated to Jean what I'd previously told Vicky, emphasizing that if the price was right, we'd buy a car today.

The Eye-Sight performed inconsistently with Jean a consistent apologist for its mediocre performance. Elisabeth said that she wouldn't want this option but rather than return to the showroom, Jean let us drive around for another 15 minutes until I told her to direct us back.

While we waited outside for Jean to park, Elisabeth and I, almost at once, agreed that there was something creepy and out of whack with what was going on. We were both sure that James had made the salesperson switch but we didn't know why, nor why they'd not want us back in the showroom as quickly as possible. Jean rejoined us and Elisabeth asked her to quote a price.

"I need your name and phone number.", Jean said dryly.

As soon as we were back in the showroom, Jean extended her hand to Elisabeth and said, "I'll give Roy your number and he'll contact you."

"Elisabeth is interested in buying a car today.", I reminded her.

"Roy will contact you. Nice meeting you, goodbye." and she turned and walked away.

Two hours later, at a competing Subaru dealer, Elisabeth was signing the dotted line for her new, 2016, Subaru Forester. Later she would think about what she would say to Roy when he called.

I'm actually not surprised by this surreal tale. Car dealers are a mysterious bunch, and when my wife and I shopped for a car a couple of years ago we walked out of quite a few dealers totally bewildered.... We finally bought on Craigslist.

Just smoked a Brick House for the first time. Disappointing after all the praise, 92-rating etc. Very ordinary, and little bitter and acrid.

That's crazy. I had a slightly lower intensity version of that at a Ford dealer. Four years ago I wanted to get a new F150, and needed to get one that day or very soon thereafter, for reasons I won't bore you with, so I was willing to buy from dealer stock. I had the A Plan, so there was no dickering on the price, and I knew what features I needed and which ones I was flexible on. I went to the larger volume dealer in town and absolutely could not get the attention of any of the "sales" staff milling around. So I went to the smaller volume dealer and drove off in Maybelline that afternoon. Great salesman; I even got him down to a dollar over cost for the Rhino Liner (bed coating).

In my opinion the maduro is far better than the regular Brickhouse.

I had been sick, and not smoked since last week. So, as an early anniversary gift, my wife handed me a Sons of Anarchy Prospect to light up tonight. I think I picked a good one.

Between you and Chico I feel a little less like I had crap in my pants. Not glad to know that you guys were treated the same way but it does make me believe that some of these fools prejudge people and their intent.

My post was already too long so I left out several other things that Elisabeth and I noticed. I could have written this...

As soon as we were back in the showroom, Jean extended her hand to Elisabeth and said, "I'll give Roy your number and he'll contact you."

Elisabeth and I went to the restroom, not knowing that each of us was trying to get our head around the bizarre behavior. When we returned I said to Jean...

"Elisabeth is interested in buying a car today.", I reminded her.

"Roy will contact you. Nice meeting you, goodbye." and she turned and walked away.

My store had 7 Caminetto Super Moustache pipes that ranged in price from $750-$2,500 (1982). There probably weren't 7 other Super Moustaches in the rest of the USA combined. These were Hen's Teeth of Caminetto.

http://images.smokingpipes.com/products/004-006-4964.jpg

A new customer, Stan, clad in denim and looking like a biker (he was), asked to look at the Caminettos. I opened the showcase, let him browse and I walked away. He negotiated a small discount and no tax, promising to buy them all and over the next several months he did. Along the way he told me that in other stores they'd hover over him or not even open the showcase.

With each pipe that he bought I'd give him a tin of Sobranie White and he'd fill these over-sized pipes to the brim and smoke them, one match, to the bottom over a couple of hours with a gifted and experienced cadence. He's the best technical smoker I ever met and I learned a lot from him and I never half-fill new pipes since. He's a gentleman I'm glad to have known and I had the good sense to not prejudge his potential as a customer or person.

Found this in the bottom of one of my humidors. Looks like I bought it as a single from cbid 7 months ago. I don't usually smoke Churchills but this one is excellent. I don't know how you guys hold on to stuff that long. ... enjoy!

It was gooooood. I just have a lot, and smoke slowly I guess. I think the only one I have left from that package is the Illusione Rex - it's one of those where I know I'll probably never see another one, so I'm waiting for the right moment to strike..or something. I'm looking forward to that one, and with cooler weather it won't last much longer.

allusred I'm about 2/3 done with this one now, and it's great. One of the best Connecticut Broadleaf wrappers I've had this year for sure. I taste lots of sweet coffee and chocolate, plus a healthy dose of pepper. It's got a really smooth retrohale too. I like this one even more than the Blinding Light. Thanks again!

Little earlier today. Paul Stulac Classic Blend Lord, Lonsdale...6x44...this ring gauge seems to near perfect for anything from 5" to 7" length cigars.
But it is the only one in the Stulac lines that is made with this 44 rg.

Grimalkin Robusto...5x50...Good cigar.
Just going to go ahead and say that the Grimalkin Robusto is the #1 cigar in this size I've smoked.
If...I could pick only one cigar to smoke, no other choices from now on, and that had to be a Robusto, at 48 rg or larger.
The Grimalkin would be it for me. Have only smoked the two sizes of the Grimalkin, Robusto and Torpedo, once the few I have on hand are gone...that's it.
Only cigar I've smoked this year that has been almost as pleasurable is the HR (Hirochi Robiana) they're close... but it's still an*almost*.
Hard for me try to compare, because it's been so long since I've last smoked either the Ramon Alones or La Gloria Cubana, my favourite Cubans, and I do not recall a Robusto in either of those brands.
So all in all...right now...Grimalkin is my #1 choice.

The qualifier for the above is that old...smoke what you like.

I certainly haven't been blown away by any of the Tat LEs I've smoked this year. The M80 was the best but the Jackal, Whore and TAA were frankly just OK at best. I still went for a box of the Hydes but the whole chasing LE game is wearing pretty thin.

Late Sunday evening Paul Stulac Cross...6x64...one the nice features, for me, is that the Paul Stulac cigars smoke very much alike in his lines.
Black Midnight Sun, Red Screaming Sun,White Blinding Light and the Classic Blend
.By tweaking the blends the blenders manage to deliver the same smoking experience within each line,
even as the sizes/shapes vary. To a degree or quality of consistency that few makers deliver as well.

I haven't seen such a brilliant play in a spell. WTH was that?...

David, if there was a Darwinian Award for football plays, this play was it. Looked more like a publicity stunt than a football play.

2012/3 La Gloria de Cubana ??. Size is about 5-3/4" x 48-rg. Cafe du Monde (New Orleans) coffee, light.

A blind tasting of sorts. I'm unfamiliar with this La Gloria (different band) and I forgot the details while it's been sitting in my smoking humidor for a few years. Usually nothing lasts more than a couple of months in there.

Excellent construction, well flagged. Beautiful, clean CT type wrapper but a bit darker and more saturated color than Ecuador grown. Initially a tight draw but quickly improved (to firm) and a near perfect burn.

More subtle than CT with a heavy does of Nicaraguan leaf, yet brighter than a Macanudo. Has more depth, body and nuance than either. I taste Dominican and Nicaraguan leaf but there's something else that I can't place (and I don't think is the wrapper). Nice snork that's rich and sweet with a little spice.

Started like a Macanudo with cajones and has gently evolved toward Nic-CT in sweetness but more cream and less acid. An exceptional Connecticut stick.

TAA Angels Anvil 2014...7.25 x 49...Really slightly less than 48 ring gauge...and that size suits me, smooth smoke, haven't had to touch up or relight, burn line very even...fine on retrohale, which I do a lot of whenever smoking...better than two hours with at least another 20-25 minutes to go. So far just what I like in a Churchill cigar.

2013 Pinar del Rio Classico Toro with New Orleans Chicory coffee with a lot of milk. I finally read the can and they suggest 50-50 coffee / milk. Good either way.

The wrapper on this stick is noticeably darker than any other Classico I've previously had (quite a few). More depth, less crisp and a little musty. Like a new species :). A QC issue on their part but not a concern on mine.

Neverbend's mentioning the New Orleans Chicory Coffee had me thinking/remembering. Seems there was more of the Chicory Coffee in the years following the Second World War.Some ex Navy had acquired the taste for the Chicory added during those years.
Anyway, don' t see much Chicory Coffee on store shelves round here now.
Cafe au Lait, Cafe con Leche. Or when asking for Coffee in England/Wales...White or Black?
Sure glad there's Coffee. Need, really need that.
Addicted to Coffee, do think Coffee and Cigars pair up well any time. Seems as if most morning smokers opt for the milder cigars.
I've just finished third cup a Java...and time, past time to grab a smoke

Morning Bob,

This tin of coffee is special because my younger daughter bought it for me. They're all adults but I'm a real mush when my kids get me anything.

2013 Partagas 1845 Crystal with Cafe du Monde chicory coffee light. I was thinking this AM that I like this coffee enough to get some more.

A nice looking cigar, oily sheen and five sunspots (4 visible). Like chicory coffee that once had a following, there was a time when some BOTL looked for these freckles on their sticks.
https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2&ik=16da8d874b&view=fimg&th=1509516624408739&attid=0.1&disp=inline&realattid=1515831319570939904-local0&safe=1&attbid=ANGjdJ9DMYOCckh81zSvKujJl_GLEvvf4pAuIQ5PHMr VxczklhrB2j9hLXQliQ1r-0l9TGDcikDPDOzMqwq4_wmDs_xkecoYEcwujbtT4gd0xpKgfMW DgZxxWHTeQlQ&ats=1445610399130&rm=1509516624408739&zw&sz=w1335-h482
Exceptionally dark, nearly maduro, this is easily the best of these Partagas that I've had (~4), very deep with rich fruit. Medium-full, with a perfect burn and a nicely spiced (not spicy) snork. Is it the sunspots?

I noticed the scope was loose and somehow one of the rings was stripped and wouldn't properly tighten. Put a new set of rings on it a couple of days ago and am heading to the range in a few minutes to get it dialed in. Grabbed a Jericho Shots for the 30 minute drive to the range. Rifle is an old 1903A3 Sporter with a old Weaver V9-W scope. I am glad I checked my setup early and didn't wait til the last minute.

Chicory coffee is worth a try, think it, the Chicory is said to negate some of the acidic taste.

Viaje 5th Anniversary, and presumably this was a one-time run so this cigar is from 2012. It's good, probably my favorite Viaje so far. More delicate than most Viajes I've had, but has a mellow, spicy smoothness that I'm enjoying a lot right now. It's still raining which might be why I'm having to work a little harder than normal to keep it lit, but overall still a nice smoke.

Better than I was expecting. Earthy, nutty with good fruity floral notes. Wish it had a longer finish but the smoothness sort of made up for it. Reminded me of a cross between a Partagas and a Julius Caesar (earth + fruity spice). Perfect for a fall morning.
