Nica Libre 1990 perfecto, from an earlier buy. I like these quite a bit. I think we had a fragfest over at the old place about a review that put these up against Padron '64, but hey for a $2-3 stick, it's a win-win
I don't know if it really ranks with the '64!
But I hear it's one of those budget friendly sticks that get much better with a long rest.
2013 Torano Colisseum with the last of my light coffee. Dreary, cool (seems cold) day.

Hi Brian,
Especially with boutique (read: short run) cigar lines, when I like them, I buy them because the next run of the line may not be the same. The first Colosseum (Churchills) were very good, eye-popping value @~$1.25 a stick, so I loaded up. I bought about 100 more in various sizes and based on the Colosseum I also bought a box of Loyal (Robusto) and a few Exodus. I smoke through the bundle or 5-pack and then come back some time later for more.
The Colosseum Rothschild (5-pack) weren't on the level with the Churchill but they were still excellent values. The Colosseum since, Toro, Rothschild and Churchill, including the bundle that I'm smoking through now (maduro) have all been sliding down the slope in quality, construction and consistency. I've been smoking them @68-70rh and I suspect that they would be at least incrementally better @~62rh.
My experience with the Loyal is similar. Nice flavor on the unlit draw but it doesn't really deliver in the smoke.
The (few) Exodus were more consistent than the Loyal but all three lines get spongy, (too) smoky, burn problems and flavors are inconsistent. This all sounds worse than they've been but I don't know what I'm getting when I grab one. Had you asked me after the first 5 Colosseum Churchills, I'd have been thumbs up.
What lines of Torano have you tried and liked?
Regards,
Pete
Edit Note: Just lit another Churchill maduro. Looked good, felt solid. Became soft and spongy upon lighting. Burn line was seriously bubbled and uneven, way smoky and harsh. Let it sit and then relighted. Improved (especially burn that's flat and almost even) but a weak draw and still a lot of smoke (on the burning end). Sort of says it all.
Pete

Twisted the pigtail on this one that has a creamy, lightly sweet citrus. No two have tasted the same but they're rather unique and the differences are subtle, shades really. Makes it interesting and I wonder if some of those differences are me.

Isn't it funny that people freak out because they don't have their phone with them. I don't know how I survived the first 35-40 years of my life. I'm fortunate as I only get maybe 10-15 calls a month. I freak out when I DO get a call, but I don't answer calls from people I don't know as I realize my warranty is up on my truck and I don't need a credit card....

I traded a cheap lighter for a Patek Philippe knock-off but it turned out that it was genuine. I wore it longer than any other watch that I've owned, 2 months. The strap broke and the watch was gone. The strap was a fake :). I don't own a cell phone but when I did I got little value out of my plan. I did want to be a professional photographer, at one point in my life, until I realized that I had no talent. I recently bought a tablet as much for a simple camera as anything but, 10" tablets are hard to keep from shaking, and I'm not as steady as I once was, and the camera quality is wanting so my photos still suck, but like Alan's phone, I got the most reliable watch I've ever owned with the tablet. Somehow, I managed to move to the rear of the technology line and it's OK by me. If they digitize cigars (OMG they did that to cigarettes!), I'm screwed.

Hi Pete,
You're not alone in moving to the rear of the technology line.Remember growing up with the black (only colour) phone that sat atop a small table, speaker portion at top of the tree and the receiver, about a five inch long cone...later the, still only in black dial phone with both speaker and receiver combined in one piece. Don't have a landline now, just a cell phone, which I use very little.
Smoking a My father #1 Robusto while the rain is bucketing down, quite windy as well. Dislike smoking indoors, but it's that or nothing.
Cheers,
Bob.

2013 Arganese Cafe Dominicana Breakfast Blend with some New Orleans Coffee (present from my daughter) medium light. Dreary, chilly and windy with rain imminent.
Unintentionally, I've been doing a rolling review of these cigars and this stick is as good as the first one that I smoked; sweet orange cream-sickle with a little oomph in the snork that lays well in the mouth long after it's finished.
I judge cigars in much the same way as I do movies. What is the intent? Is it a thriller, western or romance? Is the cigar mild, strong, complex, nuanced? If the product (film or cigar) is a cogent expression of the concept then I understand why it was made.
Lt. Col. Bill Kilgore (Robert Duvall in Apocalypse Now) "loves the smell of napalm in the morning." I'll pass on the napalm and I couldn't smoke these sticks throughout the day but they are what they're intended to be, a light, brightly flavored, early in the day smoke, something to wake your palate and complement a morning coffee. Perhaps, if this cigar were a romantic comedy it might be As Good As It Gets?

Morning Tim,
The Patek had a beveled back that was ideal for me because I have a big wrist and I could flex without it being annoying. It was pretty sporty, with a replacement leather band that gave way and it was gone. C'est la vie.
Occasionally, people would sell stuff to me in my store. There weren't many Pawn shops then (at least in my area), so I guess I was something of a surrogate. I bought mostly pens, and a few lighters and watches. Often, neither the seller or I knew the value so I made offers that I felt that I could recoup. My biggest hit was a Caran d'Ache (pen) that i bought for $30 and sold for several hundred.
The only other watch of note was an IWC that a con couple stole it. He was loud, she was (extremely) beautiful, she flirted and he caused a commotion and then the watch was gone. Lesson learned.
I can't cry over things of material value that I've lost in my life or else I'd never stop crying :).
Regards,
Pete

I hope I'd mostly be crying because a watch like that is a piece of art, and I don't like the thought of it just being gone. To me it's almost like a painting or something like that - it will last hundreds of years and give a lot of people a lot of pleasure if it's taken care of properly. We can only hope that someone found it and took care of it.
And the truth is I don't know if I could be as sanguine about losing it as you are. I'd probably cry a little just because I didn't have it anymore, haha. You're a better man than I!

2013 La Aurora Cameroon (Robusto) with water, no ice. For accuracy, this cigar looks to be a slim 50 rg, perhaps 48, but I like that.
I had lunch with some friends and during our conversation some names and details escaped me but I still remember what my first La Aurora, (Cameroon wrapper), tasted like in the 1980s and this is much like that cigar but with more body, fruit and a touch of sweetness. At this thinner RG it's a very nice smoke but I fear that this is my last.

I think I agree with you. I smoked the biggest one and it only lasted 40 min. The ash fell off really easy and never longer than 1/2 inch. Flavors at the finish were good and it burned straight but nowhere near as good as the cheaper Undercrown Shade and no way competes with similar priced cigars like a Diamond Crown or a Davidoff. I was hoping the disappointing experience was do to the high winds and 50 degree weather I smoked it in. I've got one more...I'll see.

Close to a 2 1/2 hour smoke...and it was fabulous. Perfect draw, perfect burn, never went out or even needed a touch up. A few years rest has really done wonders for this stick. It has mellowed out but become more complex. Last few I had over the past couple years were all disappointing. This one is almost worth the silly $20 msrp. Purely subjective but looks like some NC's can age well.

damp to be smoking on porch, so this thin one is being reduced to ashes. 41st wedding anniversary smoke.
Congrats, Bob!

First cigar to kick off another all-day study session. This has 2 years on it and has only gotten better. The Connecticut shade hasn't given up an inch during its nap. I don't know why it's been so long since I smoked one of these, but this is a nice reminder of how tasty they are -

2013 Arganese Cafe Dominicana Breakfast Blend. Iced Water. I was confused this morning because there was a lot of light outside, then I remembered the sun.
Watched the Jets-Dolphins game from London @9:30 this morning. Jets, other than special teams, looked good. Officiating was poor, kept the Fins in the game and then took them out of it. Controlling the destiny of games is NOT the job of officials and the bad calls (eventually to both sides) should embarrass the NFL, especially in a London game. If American fans are annoyed by penalties that they're used to, imagine the turn-off to English fans?

That is one of Pepins I keep meaning to try, but aways forget about...now will have to grab one or five.
Maybe the mildest of all the DPG cigars I've smoked was the Vegas Cubanas...discontinued now, but should you chance to find some, it is one not be missed.

It was definitely worth the price. It wasn't THAT mild, just a notch or two below the average. I hadn't heard of that Vegas, will snap it up if I ever see one of those.
Either way, this was way better than the other milder DPG I've tried, the MF Connecticut.

Back to real time now. First smoke on the first Monday of the Month.
Paul Stulac Classic Blend Lord Lonsdale...6x44 lil flame applied and here's that good doin smoke.
Now for some tunes and it's smoking on the front porch time.
Edit: 9:07 AM 05-10.
This size cigar fits quite neatly between the Corona and the Lancero...for me, and since I'm a slow smoker anyway,
the burn time for a Lonsdale is close to or smetimes a bit longer than a Lancero.
Both are good choices for a long(ish) smoke outdoors before Winter's here.

RP Cargo. Haiku review:
An RP Cargo
Is the best cigar you can
Smoke for a dollar
I like the Rock Patel Cargo more than some of their long filler marques.
Last year, my brother-in-law had a gathering at his waterfront house. I gave better,~$6-$8 sticks, to four family members (and one for me) and only had Cargos remaining that I gave to five guys who I didn't know and had no idea would be there. When I've had them, I gave Cargos because they didn't cost me much but mainly because they're a decent smoke. All thanked me save one guy who started chirping "Oh, you save the good stuff for yourself and give us the cheap sh*t!". He'd never tried the Cargo but he knew their price point and assumed their quality. A couple of more comments and the other Cargo smokers thought that their gift was tainted.
This guy took the stick out of the cello and broke it in half. My brother-in-law (owner of the house), grabbed the broken cigar and threw it into the canal and had some choice words for the eejit who sat in silence while we smoked and when the Cargo smokers finished they all said that they enjoyed them.
2013 Arganeese Cafe Dominicana Breakfast Blend (whad'ja expect?) with water on another dreary day. Great nose on this stick.
The fish won't come up to feed after all of the debris that fell into the pond, they're not stupid, they take cover when stuff starts falling from the sky. I wish that I spoke fish so I could sound the "all clear".

Smoking through a 5-pack sampler of the La Aurora lines in Robusto that was bought from the Devil Sight. All 5 eyeballed thinner than their stated 50-RG, ~47-48, so I put this one next to a Mac Hyde Park (49RG) and it isn't as thick (~47). Perhaps why they were on cBid and I mean this as an observation not a complaint.

2013 Alec Bradley American Classic Blend Toro with iced Diet Black Cherry soda and a gorgeous day.
This stick has a Honduran Connecticut wrapper rather than the Ecuadorian Connecticut that I've smoked a lot recently (and reviewed). Diminished cream and citrus pop and more like Dominican Olor in body. I've had perhaps 5 of these (in different sizes) and they're OK but some had inconsistent construction. This one is the best that I've had but overall I'm lukewarm, expected better, and I don't find them entirely satisfying.

Pete, that's a good way to live!

Hi Tim,
I was surfing Bloomberg.Com and ran across this article:
Patek Philippe Watchmaking School (free) (http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-10-06/patek-philippe-watchmaking-school-new-york)
I've been dreaming all morning since I read the story at that link. Is there any way I could pull up roots and do this? Thanks for the story, it looks amazing.

Bottled up a beer I brewed using Special B to taste like plum while drinking Sierra Nevada's pale ale, and now a CAO Gold while waiting for SWMBO to be done so she can take us down to the river to kayak. It's been far too long and winter isn't far. She could use some peace too as her job is terrible.

Brimy, it was pretty good for a mild stick. Soft, creamy, light notes of oak and tobacco. A hint of that salty note I love. She threatened to fall apart on me, though. Methinks he meant a couple months, maybe all winter lol. I'd buy another one, maybe a 5er, if I came on them cheap enough. Barrington House is a bit proud of 'em for me

Think the Murcielagos have some age on them resulting in a little smoother smoke, that is changes seem less pronounced or less abrupt. Since I'm a really slow smoker most of the time I don't experience a cigar getting too hot as it's smoked down. Pretty certain you're able to pick up a lot more flavour shifts when smoking than I do. Other than pepper and or spice I am hard put to name any changes I might notice. Have never smoked a Mummy, nor any other of the Monster Tatuajes.
As close as I can get answering your question is to say that for me the most obvious shift comes when the ring gauge drops from 50 or larger to 47/48,it seems (to me) the changes between 46 - 44 - 42 - 40 - 38 are each more pronounced in terms of flavour/taste.

Morning Bob and frodo,
I hold an internal dialog about Ring Gauge whenever I select a cigar to smoke or buy. When I encounter an inaccurate RG, and mention it in this thread, that's just the tip of my internal conversation spilling over. I rarely select cigars based on length but RG is always an important consideration.
Smoked a 5-pack La Aurora Robusto sampler this week and all were ~47-48 RG rather than the described 50 RG. My default shape is a standard 6" x 50-rg Toro, in most any brand, partially because it's easier to roll correctly (compared to thinner RG cigars), but in Robusto lengths I prefer a 48-rg as long as it's packed sufficiently (as the La Auroras were). I find that flavors are more crisp in the smaller ring but if packed like a thicker ring, they can become sloppy and sharp.
For me, after I think of flavor I think of RG and how it's packed.
2012 Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur Toro with Guatemalan coffee light. True 50-RG.

2013 Torano Colosseum Churchill with a Beef Barley soup lunch.
Another Colosseum ~48 Ring (instead of 50). I don't mind a 48 ring on 7" cigars as long as they're firmly and evenly rolled. Unfortunately, most of the Colosseum have wilted and become very soft upon lighting (far more than normal) and that's caused burn issues, inconsistent flavor and then a soggy finish.
A "50" ring cigar is (probably) already under filled to come in at 48-RG (unless it's rock hard) but to also get soft on lighting is just sad. This current stick has me on a canoe trip right from the start.

Had to swap watering day and began with a CAO American sent by DogRockets (Thanks!), but had major issues. Though it was burning nicely I couldn't get more than one good draw at a time. I had burn issues here and there too. It had a very subdued beginning, and I wondered about it being a Maduro as the few I've had have a definitive flavor, but after a few puffs it revealed itself nicely. I tried and tried but ended up giving up on it.

I changed gears and went to plan B:
CAO Gold robusto with Michter's rye whiskey.
http://i59.tinypic.com/of3fkp.jpg
I had a bit of issue with the draw on this too and am considering using the larger punch sent my Montecristo. I've not had issues like this but once which was obviously a construction issue.

Hi Brian,
You're right to ask because if too moist they'd be prone to smoke soggy. The Colosseum were kept in their original bundle (cello with a wax-type paper outer sleeve) in a 68-70rh humidor for most of 2 years and they've been in a 62rh humidor for about 6 weeks. Wrapper has a light oil sheen and they feel dry to the touch. Most of the sticks from 2013 (that I post) were handled in the same way and I've had no other problems.
The natural were better behaved but this bundle (maduro) has had more problems than all the cigars that I've smoked over the past several years. I feel that they were improperly filled too light and that could/would cause both problems.

That's just a bunch of beater pipes I got in a lot on Ebay. The rack is what I wanted, but the pipes are not too shabby either. I'll post pics in the pipes section under "what is your latest pipe purchase?" if you're interested.
It's more the rack I want to see. [emoji106]

Brian,
That's a lot better looking Torano than the Colosseum or the Loyal, looks like it's a sure and solid pack.
I like my push mower :). Of course, I hired a lawn service anyway.

It is a solid stick & stays that way! Smokes good too.
It gets better with a good nap but is not bad once acclimated.
And next season I'll get lawn service too!
