2013 Cinco Vegas Fifty-Five. I was a bit apprehensive about this one, not much fresh but age becomes it well. Pretty nice smoke now, reminds of the Romeo 1875 I smoked recently but brighter though with less body and nuance but that's still scaling the wall for this stick.

This is a bit of an odd ball:

http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag160/franksa33/3E3A9BE7-3145-4B7C-A3B7-3B974F85FAE1_zpsydaueu7g.jpg

This was in a humidor given to me by a buddy that decided he was not interested in smoking anymore. Needless to say, it was abused. The humidor went through sometime of zero maintenance...

In an effort to make some use of these and the humidor, I infused the humidor with bourbon (Knob Creek) and let several cigars from that humidor sit for the past year. Once a month I would re-fresh the humidor with a fresh shot of bourbon for 72 hours.

I have to assume this cigar lost A LOT of it's original flavor from its abuse. It started with a bit of spice for the first 3/4" and switched mainly to a very mellow and slightly sweet profile, creamy. Some earthy, woodsy flavors would pop up every once in a while and quickly fade...

I have never had a proper Pinolero, so it's hard for me to say how much damage was done and how much the bourbon changed the profile...

Wonderful to see a library organized with a proper sense of decorum.
Sadly our county libraries are slogging along with the Dewey Decimal System.
Simply ignoring LC.
Rather odd behavior when it comes to shelving volumes.
They have books written by both male and female authors on the same shelf despite the writers not being related by marriage or family.

Todays Morning Coffee (8-6-2015): Pardons for the long post, hope that it makes you smile.

I went to McDonalds for coffee this morning. This location, perhaps others, insist on preparing it and they don't offer creamer (tiny 1/2-oz containers) or sweetener on the side. I don’t know why.

I shifted into neutral as I eased the Civic next to the the drive-thru order window.
"Large coffee with 5 creams and no sugar", I called into the box, knowing the exact number required to soften the acid and lighten the color but not dilute the flavor or aroma.

"Large coffee with 5 creams and no sugar", a young woman's voice confirmed.

I drove around to the pick-up window and paid a young fellow who was completing my order.

"You wanted 5 sugars, yes?", he asked with eyebrows raised as he shook a stack of sugar packets pinched between his thumb and index finger.

"No 5 creams!", I cried, “I never use sugar. No, no sugar, just 5 creams.”

He looked deflated, pushed the coffee to the side and then disappeared from view. A minute later he returned with another cup that he dutifully covered, bagged and handed me with a dilatory salutation of thanks.

From my house it's less than a mile to this McDonald's location but more going home because there's no left turn allowed. Normally I’d have turned around but the westbound traffic lanes were badly backed-up so I continued east and took the back road home through winding lanes with canopies of trees and plants and grazing horses dappled in the morning light.

“It’s takes a couple of minutes more but I should take this way home all the time”, I thought to myself. “This beautiful day calls for the right smoke.”

I selected a 2007 Macanudo that should have paired perfectly as a morning smoke with coffee. I snipped the cap and lit the Hyde Park, puffed and let the smoke linger on my palate before pushing the next puff through my nose in a snork that tingled lightly in my nose. I pulled the lid off of the coffee and there, instead of the dark nutty brown color that I had expected was something that looked like white paint base with beige pigment and it tasted like dirty milk.

Giving my daughter the Civic had been a good idea. I didn’t use it, she learned how to drive a stick-shift and I drive it when I like. Of course she made me stop smoking in the car but that was of little concern to me until this morning. Reluctantly I took the car and coffee and left the burning cigar to extinguish itself.

This time I went into the McDonalds. The same young fellow quickly greeted me with the a similar listlessness to which we had parted perhaps ten minutes earlier, “Welcome to McDonalds, may I take your order”. It was a statement, not a question.

I opened the coffee and he dutifully looked into the cup and then met my eyes with confusion.

“What’s the problem sir?”

I tried to explain, I really did, but this young man couldn’t fathom my concerns. A manager moved next to him and I had to explain all over again.

“You want another coffee?”, the manager tried to cut to the chase.

“I just want to make a point that I wanted 5 creamers, I’ve ordered in the past without a problem, but this coffee has far too much creamer. I’m just trying to avoid this problem for myself and any other customers in the future.”, I said.

The manager nodded his head slowly as if in deep review of the situation.

“Did you make up this coffee, John?”, the manager asked of the young man who was posed in a deep sulk. “Did you use 5 creamers?”

“Yeah, but he asked for 5 creamers twice. Rather than open all of the little containers I used a milk container.”, John said with perfect gravity.

“So it was 10 creamers! OK, just a mistake, we’ll get you another coffee.”, the manager started away.

“No”, cried John. I used a whole milk container because it was easier and was what this man asked for”, he gestured towards me. John stepped away as the manager and I turned toward each other for any sign of comprehension.

John reappeared with a personal size, red, container of milk. He pointed to the bottom of the carton where it said, “8 fluid ounces.”

“I figured it was close to the right amount because you’d said five but you said it two times, so 2 times 5 is 10 and this is 8.”, John explained carefully, apparently because we were too dense to understand his methodology.

“Aren’t the creamers only ½-ounce?”, I asked and the manager nodded.

The manager scooped up a creamer and showed John where it said, “½ fl. oz.” on the container. “You put in too much John. Make the gentleman another coffee with 5 of these.”, he shook the creamer.

John poured a cup to about half full, returned to the counter and counted off the creamers as he opened and dumped them in.

“Four, five, there you are sir.” He was about to put the top on the cup when I stopped him and pointed to the cup that was barely half full.

“Can you fill it until it’s almost full, John?”, I asked.

“Sure”, his tone wasn’t sure at all.

John poured in more coffee and though it was still well short of the rim I wasn’t going to pursue the last few ounces, he’d beaten me.

John returned to the counter, capped the coffee and while assembling a bag with a wooden stirring stick and napkins explained to me that he thought that the “½” on the creamer meant one piece out of two, like you get when you get something that you ordered on the Internet and there are two packages.

“No John, it refers to the amount of fluid in that little container only”, I was sure that someone was going to pop out and say that this was the new version of ‘Candid Camera’. “There’s only a half ounce of creamer in each.”

John tilted his head back, then brought it back down as if he’d had a ‘eureka’ moment’.

“So I should have used 16 creamers!”, he cried out.

The cigar had indeed gone out. It was cold and I needed to press around the head to flake off the ash and though it smoked pretty well it’s taste had been diminished and altered. I could have sulked but instead I enjoyed it and my coffee and thought that I’d share this this story with you with the lesson that I learned.

Smoke the cigar and make your own coffee.

Hi Bob,

Graycliff for me, too - the G2. Didn't like it much at all. Billb1960, I seem to remember you like these? Maybe I'm missing something or had a dud, but to me it was like a generic Altadis 2nd that had been dried out and re-humidified (which I guess is possible since it came in a CI sampler).

I went thru a bunch of the G2s myself a while back. Some are good, some are ap-cray. They're made from the scraps of the "real" Graycliff cigars. Kind of like Fuente curly heads.

Hello Pete,
Glad you like Gribouille. Heard le Marin et La rose on a radio broadcast, didn't get her name . Took a while until I found a Video (you tube) of her doing that song live
Viewed and listened to that, over and over for several days. Mesmerized. And also found some more songs by here. Then had to hunt down as much info as I could find about her.At first it was the voice, but everything about her, that I've been able to find, seems to be "written" right there in that first 'Live" video.
Up until then, abou t8 years ago, Franciose Hardy was my favourite French vocalist. Then, the feeling/emotion Gribouille put into her singing hooked me from the start.
So yeah glad you like listening to her.

Now I'll have to find and listen to Sophie Milman,
thanks to your mention.

I really pissed off my wife this time! I told her to go to Pennsylvania by herself to pick up our granddaughter. It's over 6 hours round trip. I just said that I didn't want, nor would I go.

It's a beautiful day here as I write for the last time on my old deck table. A new set is scheduled to be delivered sometime between 12pm and 5pm and I need my wife out of the house so that I could set the thing up. It's her anniversary present. I almost feel clever.

Good Afternoon Pete,
Pretty easy to stay with the threads *Cigar* theme since the 2013 Proxy La Zona Torpedo you mentioned is one IO can't recall ever hearing of,
did a quick check and it certainly seems those would be cigars I'd enjoy.
Just briefly regarding Gribouille, it may just be my own insanity, but the first time I watched and listened to that video of Le Marin et la Rose, I had a sense that her life would not be a happy one. If only one person really cared for her, she should have had a good life.
Nice planning for the day. And Congratulations. I'll wager that your wife's reaction when she see what you've done will be something to remember.
I'm rather late with this...but....Enjoy the day.
Cheers,
Bob.

Think when you have the time for a Lancero it can really show you what a master blender is capable of doing with a few leaves.
Anything near that length and ring gauge can showcase the skills of the best rollers and blenders if they've fine tobacco to work with.
The My Fathers are indeed an excellent smoke.

The Nugget size is the only one I haven't had yet. It's probably the best one for me right now, due to the low price, and because I'm starting to get kind of tired of the taste profile. Being the shortest duration smoke and the cheapest are both pluses for having some on hand for cigar-curious friends.

While smoking ribs it seemed a good idea to smoke a 5 Vegas Gold box pressed as I'll be out here a while anyway (SWMBO gets mad with those hour + smokes at times). Thanks to Zeede I get to try one again while drinking a lighter style of beer (my honey wheat).

http://i60.tinypic.com/ku9v5.jpg

Zeede: Curious if you've tried their Corona version and what you thought I you have. Looking for some 30-60 min sticks so as not to anger the boss quite as much.

Oh, and yes that is a Larry the Cable Guy shirt. Cut off some sleeves one year for a Halloween costume and found I kinda liked it, especially when SWMBO wants me to dress up for something (of course I end up changing the shirt...). Guess there's some country boy in m somewhere...

Look like you're living the good life there. Good for you. Ribs, cigar, beer...yep, that will do it.

Don't think that you'll mind that it was beat up after you've smoked it :).

All cigar day working on pond's waterfall. Base rock weighs 725-lbs, then 330-lbs and a top pebble weighing 180-lbs. Couldn't lift them all with just one hand so I used two.

All sticks that I smoked today were from the 2013 Devil site buying spree including:
2 x Obsidian Double Perfectos, a Nicaraguan second and now on a Cinco Vegas Gold Torpedo.

Hard to smoke the last one, or type because my arms don't want to move.

Hope that you're weekend is going well.

Creamy and nutty with pepper zings on the retro. Pretty good change of pace mild-med smoke (since i love the full bodied beasts) but i feel 1 and half inches too long of a smoke.Got bored and I chucked it with a good 2ish inches to go.

Very good! It says 1979 but it's got to be older than that.

I did a little looking around the web and found that Hamms is no longer the original Hamms - It was acquired by Olympia in 1975, and both were bought by Pabst in 1983. After a series of acquisitions and consolidations, the Hamms brand is now owned by "MillerCoors" (shudder) and sold in select (random if you ask me) markets in the US. The original brewery in St. Paul, MN, which was located for access to the artesian wells ("sky blue waters"), has been closed since 1997.

And just to return to the thread topic, I had a Bahia Blu and a CLE Cuarenta earlier today.

Don't recognize that one, what is it? How did you like it?

It's a Savinelli Nicaraguan 2007 Reserve. I purchased two boxes back in September of last year. It's a 4.5 x 56 vitola.. Though it's short, it takes 90 minutes to smoke. I breezed through the first box smoking and trading, but kept this box sealed until yesterday to let it rest and see what happened with some time. It had a semi sweet chocolate / coffee taste on the first box, but time has rounded out the flavors. I wish I would have picked up another couple of boxes...

Ok Pete,
Have to admit that you got me this time, and since it's past 4PM,can't use the *just woke up* excuse.
When I read to the end of your post, Knights, Monteccristo,Dragon...Cat...I did picture a Cat in a suit of Medieval armor, looking like a Steam Punk version of an Armadillo.

Got me larfin that is certain.
Even when I realized you meant Cat,as in... a fella in a Zoot Suit, not the feline creature, still smiling.

Now,
How was the 2013 Espinosa Sequel Robusto?
Also, are the Colisseum Churhills from Torano a blend available exclusively in that size?
I've had,tho not recently some Torano Cigars,Robuso sizes I think,in both Maduro and Natural
that were good smokes. They had maybe 3 to 5 years on them when I got them.
Wondering how Toranos purchased from an online vendor now might be if smoked ROTT, any thoughts?
