I used matches at first, then a regular bic lighter. That went dead so i bought one of those bbq lighters with the bendable end as a temporary lighter til I find a pipe insert for my zippo. Works great as I can bend it and put it down in the pipe to light a bowl that goes out part way through, just kind of bulky for the odd time I have a pipe somewhere other than the deck. Any of you use a zippo pipe lighter? Any troubles with them? Do they need refilling as often as a regular zippo?

I use a Mr. Brog single torch pipe lighter with attached pipe tools. Fantastic little number. I think Mrs. Bruck got this for me on Amazon.

I have a Zippo pipe lighter but when I took it on a camping trip it ran out of fluid the second day, so now I use wooden matches when I have them and a Bic lighter when I don't, the Zippo just sits in a drawer in my desk.

Most of the time I use a Bic or Djeep disposable lighter. Recently I bought some refillable Clipper lighters that I like to use. The Clipper lighters look like a disposable lighter but you can refill them with butane, until the flint wears out.

I like butane lighters. I find the smell to be less offensive than naphtha, or even matches. My current lighter is the IM Corona "Pipemaster". My first Pipemaster had a chrome finish with engraved "pipe shapes". It failed in less than a year. My current Pipemaster has a black finish (much less expensive). It's well into its second year.
The Pipemaster has an excellent pipe tool built-in. The IM Corona "Old Boy" has one too, but it's shorter – too short.
The Pipemaster isn't a good choice for windy conditions though – will likely blow out, or burn your thumb.

Zippo and matches-- matches more often lately. I've never noticed much in way of bad taste from kitchen matches or the zippo fluid. I like the spirit of matches better, but the zippo is awful convenient for outside use.

I prefer matches. I also use a Mr. Brog clone of a Corona Oldboy at home , and I EDC an old brass Zippo with a Thunderbird butane pipe insert.
