View Full Version : Do you have a plan ?

So Old Smokey started a thread asking how long your current cigar inventory would last you if you bought no more cigars and it got me thinking...
Yes, most of us have built up inventories of cigars we like. Good deals, the looming FDA regs, having stock to age, just plain out of control Cbid buying (aka the DogRockets syndrome) - whatever the reason we've all done it.
The question is - if you were to get hit by a bus while out walking while smoking your favorite cigar do you have a plan for your stash ?
Do you have instructions, someone named to take your stash or some sort of a plan in place - or even should we ?
Certainly none of us thinks it will be the last cigar in our humidor that we smoke just before the bright light comes. What about the stogies you leave behind ?
I've seen some posts around the forums where a brother has unexpectedly passed on and someone has volunteered to sell off the stock to help out the family. In some cases that will bring in some much needed funds for a family who really can use it. In other cases it's just a matter of getting them to someone who will enjoy them rather than donating them or worse yet - just throwing them in the trash.
I have been toying with the idea of posting this and Steve's post was a natural lead in.
And further should we, as a brotherhood or community, establish a way for family to contact a volunteer(s) who would be able to assist if needed ?
Sorry to be so deep - just something I was thinking about.
I personally do not currently have a plan but have been thinking of putting something together because I don't envision my wife smoking all these cigars !

I'm glad you posted that Tony. I have a will but have often thought of what would become of my cigars, pipe tobaccos, and pipes. The thought of them going up in a yard sale or the trash is not pleasant. I'd much rather see them go to those who would REALLY appreciate them. One idea that I am running over in my mind is to name some guys in my pipe club and let them divide it up.

My middle son loves cigars, but doesn't have any excess money to enjoy one very often. Raising kids, buying nice cars and general living is his priority. But when I am no longer around I am sure he will enjoy his old mans cigars. He currently lives in Omaha, but we talk on the phone several times a week and when we do get together it is rare we don't enjoy a cigar together.
Good thread Tony and something many of us should give some thought and make plans for the inevitable.

My son in law gets all my stuff, we've talked about it several times. He also gets my collection of Bourbon and Whiskey and Beer.
Should be enough to last him the rest of his life as well.

Never gave it much thought.
The Mrs. likes the favored stuff so she won't appreciate most of my stash. The kids don't smoke yet and may never. I have a few buddies that she could give them to & I have a few addresses in the computer so I could have her make a "Bombing" run on my behalf! 😈
Maybe I'll have to put a codicile in my will.

Awww man. Buzz kill. No one in my immediate circle is that big of a cigar smoker (I know, shocker!). I guess I should inform my husband that if I die, he is to bomb the crap out of every bum in this place!

Way to bring a bum down. All my wife knows is don't throw them out! I probably should make a plan. At 5 months old, my son is probably too young to take over! I hope, once he is old enough, to be able to enjoy my stash with him for a loooong time.

Horseshoe and I have a mutual understanding that if either of us goes, the other is supposed to help the other's widow by selling the cigars (and bourbon) we have. The proceeds would probably allow the widow to never work another day in her life!

I have no plans. I don't know anyone else locally that smokes cigars, but I'm sure my wife will figure it out. She at least knows enough not to toss them in the trash and to try and sell them.

I have a nephew and some brothers-in-law that enjoy a cigar every now and then, so the wife will divvy mine up among them. Only one of them can get the wineador though, so there will have to be fisticuffs to determine who gets that.

Sort of a Festivus for the Restufus? I like it!
I didn't think anyone else put any thought into this. My close buddy and I have already discussed with our families that should something happen to either of us all the cigars and associated items goes to the other.

At this point there isn't anything appreciable, but I don't know of anyone who truly appreciates a cigar as the one who smoked a few true Cohibas just doesn't smoke these days, though he might were he suddenly dumped with some. At this point Karmen doesn't know of anyone she'd hand them off to and they'd likely get trashed I'd guess. Only one is a semi quality smoke (Avo) that I've been hanging on to for a good while now. The rest are <$5 smokes with no humidor.

Never thought of this. But like I said in the other thread, I have less than 250. I'm fortunate in that my son enjoys an occasional cigar, and I have a coworker who also enjoys cigars. Not worred about selling, but so long as somebody enjoys them, I'm okay.

I was thinking about this awhile back and talked with the wife about it and told her she should sell them off to use the funds to help. I have no one close to me that smokes to pass them off to. Now the hard part is figuring out how to give her instructions and who to have help her if that ever comes to fruition. Great thread Tony.

Thanks for all the thoughts on this guys and gals.
Gotta say I don't have kids or other family that are really into cigars so I am really liking those "divide them up and bomb all you Bums" answers LOL

Having served as the executor of my late parents' estates which took almost two years to sort out due to severe lack of documentation and organization of their papers, we vowed not to do that to our kids. We have wills and trusts set up, but more importantly I created a spreadsheet listing all of our accounts and investments, another listing all of the many passwords we use for various accounts and web sites, and finally a long letter describing all of our trusts, people to contact on our death, the names of our attorney and accountant, and how to dispose of our various non financial assets. In that document I have specified how to divide my cigar stash among my smoking buddies. I did invite my son to smoke a few in my memory, though, even though he is a non smoker. I'm sure he'll have a least one.
So, beyond cigars, do your heirs a favor and leave behind some good instructions. That said, smoke 'em while you still can.

I probably have enough cigars and alcohol to last me this lifetime and continue to build up the bunker with more purchases. Like most everything that I collect, the tobacco and alcohol will be sorted out to various family members and close friends. My hopes would be that they would enjoy these items as I have, but if needed or wanted to sell them to fund other pursuits, I'll be gone so it won't bother me a bit.

Probably should leave instructions for my wife to send my stuff to be auctioned off here for fund raising. I have a fair amount and over 80 pipes that shouldn't go to waste..... I do like the whole not dying plan......

Wife would probably give them away, or throw them out as she hates the hobby. If i ever get to the point of having the stash you guys do I'll put a plan together to sell off for kids college money.

I don't plan ahead so well, but I'm starting to come around to the idea of involving a Thunderdome.

Or I could go out enjoying the last of the stash researching and answering Usafvet509's poll. I imagine if I tried lighting one up doing the deed, the wife would make sure it's my last...
