For those of you who don't know, IPCPR is in a couple weeks and with the looming FDA regulations, by all accounts, it's going to be a madhouse of new releases because all cigars released August 8th or later will be subject to FDA approval prior to marketing. I've heard industry media saying they expect close to 1,000 new releases as companies are going to clean out their pipelines of new blends. I don't blame the companies at all but I would think that outs shops in a bit of a bind as how will they evaluate what they want to carry from that glut of new releases. I'm sure a lot of the new releases will be good but I'm sure a good portion will be half baked and pushed to market just to beat the deadline.
What new releases are you guys excited about? Does that number of new releases excite you or make you nervous that many won't be good?

I had read somewhere that some cigar companies will be releasing lots of new cigars at the show, but in only the minimum quantity to get them considered "released" for this new rule by the FDA, a soft, or flaccid, release if you will, with a harder, more erect release this fall when they would normally release them.
Not sure exactly what it means overall. Is selling 5 boxes of a release enough to get it to qualify? That sort of thing.
As for releases I'm looking forward to, I know there is a new L'Atelier Maduro size coming out. Not a new release, just a new size. The Crowned Heads Le Careme sounds tasty. I'm not a big CH fan, but I'll probably try a couple.
Also, the Tat Krueger dress box will probably be on display. You all know that makes my motor hum.

A cigar's a cigar to me as long as it's not something awful like a Ron Mexico or Swisher Sweet. I could care less about new releases as cigar trends seem to be driven mostly by fad and not by flavor or quality. IMO All the new releases and limited releases are is fad bait - like people posting Youtube vids and hoping theirs is the next one to go viral. My concern with the coming regs is that cigars will become more scarce in general and the prices will go thru the roof - that and I fully expect Big Bro to squash internet sales like they did when they started 'regulating' cigarettes. We'll end up with B&M prices x3 which is just want the gov't wants.

It's my understanding that they have to be "Available" to count. I would think there may be a lot of "shipping delays" on new releases.

Wait and see for me. Ill wait to see what my trusted compadres have to say about things. Should be plenty of stock to go around. A lot of this stuff wont actually be available til later this year or well into 2017. Im chasing less and less new stuff as the years go by and Ive already been picking up stuff I was excited about and had on my wishlist: Viaje Leaded, Bio-hazard, My Father Bijou Pelo, MF Garcia/Garcia, Illusione Miserere (best new cigar of 2016 for me btw). Ill probably go in for 5ers of Todos Las Dias and some El Titan De Bronze stuff. Other than that Ill be on the lookout for surprises from my favorite blenders.

Part of the problem will be reviews. With so many new releases, there's no way the normal outlets can provide reviews of most of the new releases in anywhere close to a few months. It may not matter as many new releases may not hit shelves for many months but then will they have samples available for review. If they do how much will the profile end up changing by release. Maybe they end up re-blended or need more time to settle after rolling and how they smoke as IPCPR samples will be very different from how they will smoke when released. It's going to be a madhouse and a crapshoot IMO.

Think we'll be seeing some attempts to move stocks of some cigars that have not been selling as expected due to high prices.
And, hopefully will see some discontinued blends revived under new names or in new sizes. Paul Stulac stopped both Lonsdales and Lanceros, then there a few Don Pepin Garcia cigars that could" come back as new" My father cigars examples Vegas Cubanas, San Cristobal Del Sol.
One way or another...should be seeing more than a few interesting sales/price drops soon.
Time to add a cooler?

IMO, over the next two years, if you like it, you better hoard it. Even if it is old enough to be grandfathered, you never know. You also never know who might sell out to a larger company.

Group W here. In no position to stockpile, so I have to ride what comes. I can happily keep smoking old hits (LGC Serie R, CAO Brazilia, etc) if the worst case happens... Hoping for the best, though

It is a new version. The blend is different. My Father hasnt given out much info on it but they used more Pelo in the filler. They probably also used higher grade Habano Oscuro etc.

If regulations continue to be placed, and internet sales are outlawed... would y'all continue to buy from B&Ms? Quit buying cigars? How much of a price increase would you be able to handle?
Also, would winedors and cooledors become obsolete as people would likely stockpile less without ability to buy such large auction etc lots?

That would be pretty awesome. That just got me thinking. Let's assume that each sample of a new line is a 6x50 toro, that's about 3.27 cubic inches of cigar. I've seen a lot of estimates of 1,000+ new cigars this year. So that would be about 3,270 cubic inches of cigars. Each gallon is 231 cubic inches, so you are talking about at least 14 gallons of cigar or a bit more than 1/4 of that drum full of individual single samples. Holy shit, that's a lot!

Out of curiosity, if you don't mind me asking, how are you planning on dealing with the deluge of new releases?
I'll deal with this year's IPCPR the same way I do every year: by watching a little bit more of my hair fall out while my blood pressure goes up a little bit.
Aside from the obvious releases that are going to do well no matter what, every year it's a crapshoot. For as many times as I guess right, I guess wrong. There are cigars I think nobody in their right mind would want and before we know it our customers are jumping ship because we aren't carrying them. There are cigars that I am convinced will walk away with glowing reviews and mid-90s scores and yet they sit on the shelf without so much as a glance from our customers. We'll finally open an account with that hot boutique brand only to see our initial purchase still sitting on the shelf 10 months later. There are brands we walk right past because they just don't look exciting only to realize six months later that we missed a golden opportunity. Like any big herf, you can only smoke so many cigars before you reasonably can't taste anything anymore. Shoving visits with 100 companies into just a few days, and trying so many new cigars in such a short time, doesn't really afford you the opportunity to do a thorough taste-testing of blends you haven't tried before. As a retailer I would say it's equal intuition and luck when it comes to figuring out what needs purchased.
This year will be the same as always, just with more new stuff to make a split-second guess on.

Le Bijou Limited 2016
Purchased 7.14.16, $20, Small Batch
Ecuadorian Habano Oscuro/Nic/Nic Pelo D'Oro
Pre - Gorgeous dank tobacco aroma, tilled earth, peat, cocoa, espresso , nutmeg, cedar...a lot going on. Sweet maple syrup, lemon peel, pepper and subtle grapefruit; cake fondit & cocoa powder cold draw.*
1st- super rich dark flavors to start, warm molten lava cake, black coffee, fresh black pepper & a faint ripe plum sweetness on the finish. A slightly sour note is present. 10 min in the pepper fades leaving allspice, can really taste the Pelo now with its chewy mouth feel. Firm draw and minimal smoke to start, the cigar feels heavy & wet...eventually opens up to a firm draw that produces decent enough smoke. 2nd- consistent, just gets smoother with more tasty spices (cinnamon, nutmeg), raisin, coffee. 1:45 in giant nic kick...cant finish it, started getting the spins...this is one of the strongest cigars I've ever had.
Full
22/30
(it probably would have finished just over 2 hours, should be closer to 1:30 once it dries out)
Hope that helps.
