View Full Version : Forgotten Cigars

I was poking around all the Memorial Day deals online while at work and in all the browsing I came across a cigar brand that I don't see get nearly as much love as I feel like it used to very recently. Curivari. Maybe it is just me but it seems like a year or two ago there was a lot of love for them here and at poof but I can't remember the last time I saw someone post up a pic of one in the "what did you smoke today" thread. I'm really tempted to get a few and see if they have gone to hell or just been forgotten. I guess when the NC industry seems to be largely driven by "What's New?!" Good cigars fall away just based on sheer volume of brands.

What are some other brands that you guys haven't seen in a while or used to love but haven't had in a long time?

All righty now jhedrick83 I'll give you that I did not post up a pic in the "what did you smoke today" thread, but I did just post that I smoked a Curivari Nice Ash 5th anniversary stick in the thread and I did post up a pic of the 3 boxes I bought that day in the "what did you buy lately" thread - a week ago........ and I grabbed and lit up a Gloria de Leon tonight before I read your post hashtag: keeping the brand alive in Western New York lol

But I get you - not seeing alot of love for the brand out there lately myself.
One that I notice, on a much smaller scale, is Black Label Trading Co Those seemed to be posting everywhere back in the poof days and I was even listing on MAW requests as I couldn't find them around me.
Viaje seems to have taken a big hit as well.

Well, in fairness I was hardly on last week and I'm honestly good to remember what day it is right now! ;) Viaje is another good one. I never really got into them but I would be curious to see if some of the guys used to love Viaje and have moved on and why.

I started smoking Black Label when they first came out, even went to a cigar event they were at. Their stuff was really good and in my mind
even better than some of the well known names, I bought a few boxes. After they got going and became bigger, all I had was issues with
about every stick they made. No draw to wrappers blowing up. Haven't touched one since although I really liked what they were doing.

Viaje seems to have fallen off the radar, they were doing some really good stuff and I still have some sticks from about 5 years ago.
The Satori line was one I really liked.

Don't know about the Black Label Trading Co cigars, but having smoked my first Viaje Oro Fuerza, courtesy of Merovius can say I think that is one helluva fine smoke. If you haven't had the pleasure of smoking one, you're missing a real good one that should not be missed.

La Duena is a great example here. A fabulous maduro. One of the best. But you never hear of this. It seems like it's the bastard child of the Pepin/My Father/Pete Johnson portfolio. You hear of every single My Father. You hear of every single Tat. You never hear of this. Not sure why that is. The only time I ever see it is a single in a My Father sampler. Sad really, it deserves so much more. Oh well, perhaps it keeps the cost down for us that love it.

I still smoke a Curivari occasionally and I'm never unhappy about it, but you're right Jesse, they seem to have fallen off the radar a little around here at least.

Viaje is another good one. They've got a couple issues for me though. It seems as though everything they put out is a limited edition or seasonal release, and I wonder if people are getting fatigued by the constant chasing. Some of their labels are just atrocious (Farmer Bill and Stuffed Turkey, anyone?), and many of their "regular" labels look too alike to me. Even if I'm not a Viaje expert, I shouldn't have to work so hard to find out what I'm looking at or smoking. The sad part is most of their cigars have been good, and a couple have been borderline great.

That's what I was thinking - they seem to be focusing on the seasonal or special releases and those still seem to get some action but the regular line not so much

Ron Mexico in true Usain Bolt fashion shot with blinding speed to the heights of glory.
Then...sadly,oh so sadly as many before him, fell.
Having for that all too brief moment burned with an incandescence never before seen
Fell to be seen no more.
Multitudes wept, tho they've bathed in the light of Ron Mexico,
and shall forever hold those memories of the brightest times in their hearts

There are about 4 different shops/lounges that I will go to regularly and I always seem to notice that the Flor de la Antillas boxes are the ones that are usually the ones empty first and that are always being replaced yet do not hear much talk about them. Someone is smoking them.

I bought one yesterday. Also got two singles that I have never tried before, La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor belicoso and a Diamond Crown Maximus robusto.

I used to smoke the Seleccion Privada Maduros. Burned through quite a few fresh but they just didnt hold up over time. Ive had the BV500, Achilles Hero, Cafe Noir 54, Reserva Limitada Cafe 52 maybe some others. All kind of fell into average and unremarkable territory, not bad cigars just better out there imo. Iirc @D37P (sp?) used to smoke the BV500s like it was his job. The Achilles Hero is probably the most "Cubanesque" nicaraguan Ive had, for w/e thats worth.

I smoke my fair share of Viaje and I think Andre is still putting out some good stuff. He had a problem with Eduardo Pujals and moved production from Raíces Cubanas last year so there has been a bit of an exodus with his fans. For new smokers, Viaje is incredibly confusing and confounding. Its all mostly small batch stuff and Farkas has been known to "have fun" with the blends, doing stuff that comes up in conversation at cigar bars ala the Stuffed Turkey, Holiday, Throwdown etc. Some are hits, some are misses. When he first came on the scene he scored high in publications so a lot of small minded folk hoarded his stuff, his scores have been dropping consistently so now people are unloading but last years C4 and Zombie shots were really good. One mans trash...I still buy his stuff and enjoy the F&F, S&B, Oro, Zombies (shots and greens), Exclusivos and C4.

I feel like RoMaCraft might be the next forgotten brand.

Good points on Viaje. I think my first 2 might have actually come from you in that "newb" (haha) trade, a Hangtime something something (Spring Harvest?) and an Oro...or Platino...I don't know. They were both really good though, I do remember that. I can't complain about the flavor or quality of anything from them, except a red labeled one I had at a B&M that I thought was smokeable but slightly below average a year or two back.

I could see you being right on RoMa too, but that might just be me projecting again like I did with the Viaje LE thing. I've never had a bad RoMa Craft, but I typically haven't been blown away either.

It occurred to me last evening as I was smoking a San Lotano Oval, that I hadn't heard a lot about them in a couple of years. It seems like all of AJ's other blends started to take the spotlight off of the Oval, which makes sense since everything AJ Fernandez blends turns into a best seller. But I still LOVE the Oval.

I've forgotten about all the forgotten cigars that I've forgot about. Bottom line is that there's so many cigars that you can't have them all in your humi. I don't know how many times I see a cigar and remember that I liked it and wonder why I don't have any in my humidor. The La Duena along with the La Reloba are nice cigars that we don't hear about much.....

You can't listen to what 04EDGE40 says about anything. He must store his cigars outside, in the bushes or something because he's always whining about this cigar being plugged or that cigar not burning right. Not sure he has ever smoked a cigar he has stored and it has been "well made".

How could he ever smoke a "well made" cigar, When Sir Dog Rockets who can smoke a well made cigar, understood that His Excellency defines thus decrees: "Only a Gurkha shall be considered to be well Made." And His Excellency has every last one of the Gurkhas ever made.

I think one of the biggest issues with Viaje and BLTC is that prices kept going up because "they're all small batch releases" but they've yet to really hit one out of the park and justify the cost. Zombie was solid and Morphine Lancero was good, but they've yet to produce that stick that is both Unique and extremely good! Caldwell falls into this category as well. Long live the king and king is dead are ok. However, they started into these "Limited" Lost and Found releases and started bumping all their prices and for the most part, they all suck! People love to pay for hype but at some point your product is going to have to live up to that hype. If it doesn't, you're not going to make it.

The other thing is variety. If you really want to be big in this industry you have to have something for everyone. That's why DE and Tat got so big. That's why My Father is still doing well. While I've never had a bad stick from BLTC, everything tastes similar IMO, so unless that particular taste is your favorite, you find other smokes. Same with Viaje. Everything I've had from them has been really heavy on that Charred Wood Flavor, which for me just doesn't do it. At an average of $12+ per stick I just avoid them now.

After all of the hospitality and fun times that I provided these men, it's amazing the way they treat me!

For the record, I store my cigars at 65% and anywhere from 62-68* in beautiful cedar drawers and trays. Ask Horseshoe, it is simply a curse that I must always work twice as hard as anyone else to enjoy a cigar. But it shows my resolve and determination. And my v-necks show just enough skin to keep female and male alike intrigued. Also ask Brent about that one.
