View Full Version : 30 Days of Singles: A DogRockets decree
DogRockets
05-15-2016, 12:09 PM
Here ye, here ye. DogRockets has just declared 30 days of singles to be smoked.
I was going through my cigars yesterday and was overwhelmed by the amount of random singles I have. Whether items I took from a Pass, a bomb someone sent me, a single I picked up to try, or my last of some cigar I've just about smoked my way through, my singles have piled up.
So for th next 30 days I'm only smoking singles, nothing I have multiples of.
Why are singles so hard to smoke sometimes? For me it's fear I will love it and want to buy more of them. What is your reason?
Will you join me Bums? Smoke those singles and post them here.
I'm starting off with a 187. I know nothing about this except it's a small ring gauge. I'm guessing WNYTONY sent it to me at some point. Well it's being smoked now!
Let the 30 days begin!

In over 8 yrs or so of smoking I have only bought 3 unopened complete boxes and one of those was a split so..I usually try to buy and smoke at least 2 of something but there are may times in the past when I was more active on the boards (bombs, passes, maw/pif) that I had many singles. Like you the fear of liking and not having another was real...it's also why I don't buy into the hype of the LE stuff..but over the yrs it's become more of smoke what is available in my cooler which were stuff I bought in samplers..so I am back to refilling and looking at new stuff which in my case doesn't bode well for my storage..
I am in.
Will be enjoying something after my son's graduation today and I will make it something I only have 1 of.

For me it's probably the same as you guys, and I pretty much never chase LEs.
I also tend to wait for the "right moment" on cigars (especially CCs) that came as gifts - nice weather with no wind, my palate isn't burned out from too much recent smoking or spicy food, and a time when I'm not working or doing homework so I can just enjoy the cigar.
I've gotten a little better recently about smoking those singles down and I'm happier for it. I don't know if I'll last the full 30 days (even though I probably have enough singles for 100 days, or more), but I'll make a point to smoke a few and put 'em up here.
Good idea Sir Rockets.

With a humidor consisting MOSTLY of singles (probably well over 200), I'll jump on this too! Def won't make 30 in 30, but I'll add in where I can!

Ok, here we go. I got this from Tobias Lutz, and if my recollection is correct I've had it in the humidor for about 2 years. This is a Camacho 10 Year Anniversary 11/18 vitola, not sure on the exact year it was made but I did a quick search and believe they were released in 2008. The cellophane is nicely yellowed, and so far it's smoking like a dream. Thanks buddy!

It doesn't need to be a single per day per se, his that you only smoke singles for the next 30 days when you have a cigar. This Indiana weather won't be conducive for me having one a day either. Hopefully some days I'll get more than one though!

I like the idea. I was just going through my wineador and I have an entire drawer of singles. I always look at it first but often end up steering away. Sometimes it's cause I'm afraid I'll like it and need to get more but mostly it's the fear of not liking it and since I don't get as many opportunities to smoke as I would like I go for the ones I know I'll enjoy.

Great idea, although I don't think I can do it, only bcs I don't have that many singles. About the best I could do is smoke a different cigar every time. Lame, I know :)

I'm in ! Have lots of singles that you generous Bums have sent me for one reason or another.
First up today is an HR Sublime that six10 bestowed upon me in the March Madness Bracket contest winnings. Excellent f'ing cigar !
And yes DogRockets I did send you that stick. It's an Esteban Carreras 187, figured you'd enjoy as it was a maduro. How'd you like it ?
I won't be having one of those as I still have several I bought from another BOTL a while back, but they are a pretty good non-monster smoke IMO.

Know I'm late, but it's still Sunday evening for me...so here's photo of my first, submitted most humbly with the expected doff of the cap and tug of the forelock as is proper.

Overall it was pretty tasty. I didn't get full enjoyment out of it as it was in the 40s when I was smoking it outside and my hands were pretty cold! Only issue I had was it burned a bit wonky. Glad I finally dusted that beauty off and turned it to ash!

i will play along as well!! i got some bombs with singles i have not had and my two singles tupperdors are getting full!! actually a good bit of what i smoke at the cabin last week was singles to try some new things. i have so many singles from when i started but i quickly found what i liked and VERY slowly bought up but the past several months i have gone wild with buying boxes so its time to step back and enjoy some singes!!

Will not be able to do the whole 30 days, but here's my second one per day.
Carlos Torano Casa Torano...4.75x 50 .I've not been skipping this cigar nor ignoring it, but seems it's been lurking in the Humidor long enough to show a pale yellow cellophane.Nice solid feel and, darned if I know why it languished there so long..smoked quite nicely and stuck around for ninety plus minutes.
Went very well with a couple of cups of hot coffee.

I know it doesn't count, but last week I busted out two singles. A Hyde courtesy of Horseshoe and an Uncle Lee courtesy of Ciro. Thanks fellas, both were outstanding cigars!

Each humidor is marked with a unique character of the Chinese language, the exact number of humidors in his extensive storage areas known only to him.

I went down to the cigar lounge this afternoon and the owner wanted me to smoke a new cigar he was carrying and handed me 1. Well, since I only had 1 of them, I decided it would fit this thread. And I can't for the life of me remember what it was called. It was an exclusive blend for a company he gets tobacco from. I am glad it's the only a single as I won't be buying more.

First on the docket was the La Aurora 100 Anos Maduro courtesy of Ciro once again. Thanks a ton brother, it was a great cigar!
Second cigar was the All My Exes lancero from Ezra Zion. This cigar is so much like the Jericho Hill that I can't believe it's not the same blend (it's not). Great cigar, well worth picking up if you find one to try.

Starting off the weekend with an Illusione Rothchildes. I think I got this in a pass but it could have bombed to me. Single number 6.
On an unrelated note, just found out a close friends 19 year old daughter passed away. Regardless of where your kids are, hug or call them and tell them you love them.

Since this is DogRockets decree and we all know he has a deep burning love for Gurkha, I figured what better time to smoke the few I've recieved. I have to say the construction on this thing was amazing straight burn line with a only a couple minor touch ups. But the flavor left a bit to be desired, it wasn't bad there just wasn't much there. I might tackle the beast tomorrow

This morning I had a Por Larranaga panatela, wish I could remember who bombed it to me. Thanks, whoever you are!
Now smoking a Tempus (labeled from 2012) from Gunther7912 I believe. This was the heaviest cigar for it's size I can remember picking up, and I just knew it was going to be plugged. Nope, perfect draw and super slow burn, with a very smooth coffee/chocolate and some leather flavor. Thanks Jake!

I haven't had a bad Illusione. The cg4 is in their core line or whatever you want to call it, kinda like the My Father My Father line. Illusione Illusione I guess. They're only 10-12 years old I believe, run by a fellow in NV. They put out a few LEs.shop exclusives, and also have great regular production lines like this one, the Rothchildes, Ultra, Epernay, Maduro, and some others.
If you get a chance try the Fume d'Amor lancero. Still my favorite new-to-me this year and a contender for top-5 overall in my book. They're just incredible, I can't rave enough.

I got to enjoy four more singles this weekend, bringing my total to a whopping 8! Halfway to my goal!
First two sticks were Saturday morning double features. A Tat El Triunfador followed by my last Jericho Hill (that isn't a lance, anyway).
Saturday night Horseshoe met me at an Emilio event at Rudy's and I enjoyed an Emilio AF2 (I still have one left, but I'm counting it) followed by a 1502 Nicaragua. Both amazing cigars.

V cut, easy light, bit tight on the draw at first, even burning solid feeling cigar which Kayla sent me recently. At the end of an hour and five minutes, the cigar was finished and it was time for a bit of sleep. Now can't recall if I noticed any flavour shifts while smoking this one, think for me, it was just tobacco, but was tired and well have missed something beyond that. No it was a triple maduro but it was dark and my camera couldn't handle the reflective silver in the label. I had to take the picture off to the side.

If you like them I can tell you which shop around rochester still has a box or two left. Personally I like them better than the new band ones, but it could be the age on them already.

A little more smoke and a lot smoother than the new band, I wouldn't mind knowing if I am not stealing them away from your stash at the store.

Saturday's single, a real sweet smoke.
Waited until I could be sure of uninterrupted time to smoke this. Viaje Oro Fuerza...5x52. This cigar amply rewarded the wait over the time smoked. A triple band should've been overkill, however they worked stylish not flashy. Removed the orange silken foot warmer prior to using a guillotine cut of the cap then lighted the cigar. By the way the smell of the cigar more than lived up to expectations gained from the brown cellophane (dated 8-24-14)that smell was of fine tobacco with zero ammonia odor. Very sharp burn line, perfect draw right from first puffs, not a hint of harshness when retrohaling. A well constructed medium bodied cigar with a visually attractive wrapper,Habano?. About twenty minutes into it the ash is very firm with little or flaking. A half hour into the cigar the burn line became uneven but after a few minutes self corrected. Needed no touching up or relighting,do like cigars that do not demand that attention after the initial lighting. The ring gauge allowed me to enjoy changes in complexity, tho I can't name those flavours that intertwine nicely with no hint of any abrupt shifts. My thoughts once the cigar's smoked. The Viaje Oro Fuerza is a cigar I'd never light unless I could be certain of uninterrupted time to enjoy the experience. If you can find one with some age,or have the patience to allow the cigar(s)to age before smoking. This is one that qualifies unreservedly as a special occasion smoke. Enjoyed this fine cigar courtesy of Merovius (TYLER).
Wish I'd gotten at least one photo.

Do YOU believe he can do this?
At the start of the decreed 30 days his Excelency Sir. Dog Rockets stated:
"So for th next 30 days I'm only smoking singles, nothing I have multiples of."
He will not smoked a single Gurkha during this period?
A poll proposed?
Of course not, only his Excellency has the authority to order a poll,
that power residing with Sir.Dog Rockets only,as decreed by His Excellency Sir.Dog Rockets.
Since no one can doubt there is a Gurkha that Sir Dog Rockets does not have stashed away,
in the hundreds or thousands
in one of his numerous walk in and/or drive thru humidors
YTour opinion please/
Not a poll...NOT A POLL,just wondering what others amongst his subjects think.
Remember should you be at all hesitant to express an opinion that His Excelenlcy does not only allow, but encourages his subjects to think.

Way back in the early hours of this day while waiting for the coffee to clear away some of the mist. Jericho Hill .44S that had ragged foot, trimmed that, and it was about 4.75x44 when lit. Bit tight draw at first then, just fine, seemed to last fairly long, and tho additional coffee didn't disperse the mist, which was internal not external, the cigar smoked well. Tho I haven't burnt as many singles as decreed, Some of few that did meet a fiery end would still have been skulking in my humidor had I not made a, doomed to failure from the start as it was, effort to escape the expected wraith his Excellency Sir. Dog rockets will surely unleash upon this miserable failure.

There has been a bunch of rain that way. The farm is south of you 60 miles just across the border outside of Braman OK and I haven't been able to get in the John Deere and run the brush hog for several weeks. I'll be able to celebrate, what the heck is it called DogRockets Twatedsday or something like that ?
Hope you liked that Belle Encre restomod 75 yesterday, I'm getting ready for you
Glad to see that I'm not the onliest one confused when by decrees handed down by His Excellency Sir. Dog Rockets, days are added to the week, and months, may as May has lose a day . Just may be he is merely gauging the reactions of his subjects, biding his time before renaming a month or by decree expanding the calendar to a lucky thirteen months when he add the long awaited (at least by Jeremy) month *GURKHA*

Realized I don't have as many singles as I thought. For my fear of smoking the last of any cigar, I keep most in pairs.
But I wanted an easy early-morning cigar for this past Sunday, here's what I grabbed (only one of em!)

Atypical for me to smoke more than more a day, but...
Having been drinking a hoppy pale I figured a more mild type smoke might work, and though not a great choice I didn't want to take a single to see if it paired well so chose a Cargo.
What I found was that it didn't clash too badly but did somewhat mute the hop flavor of my pale. But when I tried it with a Sierra Nevada pale it went well enough, which makes me wonder if it due to a lesser hop flavor or more bitter upfront.
Inquiring mind wants to know about a cigar that doesn't clash with a paler beer, and especially a hoppy IPA.

Well, I'll allow that's a possibility. Now that I think about it, most times I pair the two I tend to enjoy both the scotch and cigar without fail and regardless of brand :)

I've yet to buy a bottle of scotch (still searching for what else I like besides Laphroaig 10), but have noted how much happier I've been with a smoke with a rye whiskey in hand.

There are a lot of good ones out there, to the point of being a little overwhelming. We've got a few guys around here who can point you in the right direction though. I'm no expert, but Macallan 12 is pretty tough to beat. This Dalwhinnie is good too, and my favorite so far is probably Balvenie Doublewood. Good luck if you start descending that slope too, haha!

Oh, I'm certainly on that slope.
I've tried several now, but none seem quite my thing as the Laphroaig. I'm good with it at its not overly pricey either. But I'm certainly open to suggestions and willing to try something else.

Courtesy of Merovius. Lost and found Skin suit...5x50.
Good looking and well constructed Robusto, really nice tobacco smell before lighting, then within just a few minutes realize theres an excellent taste in this cigar, cant name it and tho not overpowering it's certainly there, expect had I beenreally focused would have noticed this right from the start. This smoked at a very even keel, remarkably smooth retrohale. The way a genuinely good cigar should smoke, never bitter, no nicotine blasts nor sticky sweetness, just excellent tobacco all the way till the end after one hour and thirty five minutes. Must exptess my gratitiude to Tyler (Merovius ) for having provided me with this fine smoke, which hopefully shall save me from His excellency Sir Dog Rockets displeasure, as Thus I'm able to meet his Excellency's decreed thirty days of singles this one further time.

Tonight I grabbed a cigar that was gifted to me, but sadly I forgot to write on it who it was from. It's been over a year ago and if it was from you, please speak up so I can thank you again. It is a JM's Maduro Corona and I am very impressed with this inexpensive cigar (less than $2). I am only 1/3 in and I would gladly smoke more of these. Not taking into account its price, this is a really good smoke. I have smoked a bunch of $6-$7 cigars I don't enjoy nearly as much as this one. Impressed!

Lost track of what number this was that I smoked Friday, 03 June.
Debated cutting this cigar lenthwise into quarters before smoking...
(Ernesto must have emptied a barn to roll one of these)
Lack of duct tape to prevent the unraveling of the wrapper of the four coronas cutting would produced.
Left no choice other than to smoke it as rolled.
Once the firebox is well stoked and Old Number 62 has built up a good head of steam it's departure time.
Leavin the station with old #62
Dollop of sweetness.
Wallop of Pepper.
Not the caudron of Pepper implied by its menacing bulk .
Clouds of smoke rolling from both ears oscure the view,
can't see how much smoke's rising from the lit end of the cigar.
My Grounhawg was a layin out in the shade a th Banyan tree as is his wont, the clouds of smoke rolled his way,
an he raced right up the Banyan tree an hasn't come down.
Less I'm mistook warnt ever any banyan tree hereabouts.
A youngster whose smoking experience has yet to extend to anything containing tobacco might.
Believing he can fly, jump from the window of his wind-milling skull.
Hold on sloopy is playing... out there somewhere.

Short little smoke somertime between Midnight and one AM. Punch Gran Puro...4x38? or 40 I'm guessing. This little cigar wore brownish cellophane and tho it did smell pretty nice, I expected it to have little or no flavour...yup a dud. However it smoked nicely, not dried, stale or bitter just good tobacco, oh, had one small sliver of wrapper missing at about the mid point, lot of words about a short smoke. But I've had it for more than a year and expected zilch, it was a nice tho short smoke.

This fat little guy is a 4.5 x 60 Santiago Bull Dog. Locally made up in Rochester NY as I understand it.
Hardheaded was kind enough to send it my way and it was a good smoke, even though it was a bit of a jawbreaker
I could not putt with this in my mouth....

Smoking a full size Tat Verocu for single #28. I've only had the Verocu in the previously small size. Very curious how it translates into a bigger and longer cigar.

I didn't know there was more than one La Mission L'Atelier Tony. Matter of fact, I was given this free by a retailer when I made a Tat Monster purchase one time, so I didn't even buy it myself. It has a pitchfork looking M on it. That's all I know!
No one told you about the M-80 because you don't like limited releases!
Oh, and Twatednesday is sweeping the nation. Get with the times!

Okay, so I have a bunch of cigars to report. I've not been keeping up with posting them, but I've held on to the bands so I know what I've smoked!
My previous total was 8 cigars, so add these to that list:
Cubanacan Habano - Surprised by how good this one was
Herrera Esteli Toro - Used to hate these, still hate these. I can't figure out how this isn't one of the worst 10 dollar sticks of all time.
Guerilla Warfare Corona - Had one of each size left, smoked the corona. Absolutely amazing cigars.
El Gueguense - Fantastic. Couldn't remember if I reported this one, but I couldn't find it. This is a must try.
Regius Seleccion Orchant - Great cigar, can't go wrong with Regius. Still want to get my hands on a Damaris...
HR Belicoso - Very overrated cigar. I couldn't get into this one. Good enough to finish, but I wouldn't pay 5 dollars for it. Let alone 20...
Skinny Chuck - Good cigar, not blown away. I have two (but I'm counting it) and I'm going to let the other rest...
Skinny Tiff - I have two, but still counting it. Amazing cigar! I liked it so much more than the Chuck, I would have guessed the other way around.
Black Label Last Rites - Mind-blowing. Need more.
UF-13 - I have two of these as well, but I'm counting it. It's a Liga, enough said.
Warped La Hacienda - Very solid stick, but no Futuro. Every Warped pales in comparison to Futuro.
EZ FHK Reagan - Love the name, about chucked the cigar. All other FHKs I've tried have been great. This one was just plain bad.
So bring my new total to 20! Woot, 5 past my goal!
Hoping to have another tonight, we'll see.

Dang Collin, I'm impressed that you can keep up with all those cigars and notes! Woot! Those Guerilla Warfare coronas are good. I used to get those from Small Batch, but I didn't see them listed any longer on their website. Maybe I just missed them???...

Yes sir, one La Mission but 5 or 6 different sizes that are listed as years. I've had the 1959 and just got some 1955 and haven't tried one yet so was kind of wondering......
Might as well have been a Gurkha for all the help you are Mr. "have no idea - someone gave it to me so I smoked it" :poke:
For me tonight a Debonaire Robusto courtesy of six10 in the NCAA bracket contest. Thanks Tim - really quite an excellent cigar. Second size of Debonaire I've had and I only wish they weren't so pricey.

Singles 30 and 31 tonight. First a Tat Cabaiguan. Hate to see this go as my last one. Good thing I just bought 11 more last evening on cbid! It will be followed by a Diamond Crown. Haven't tried this one yet.

Local State Farm rep has it out in front of his office and uses it for promotion. I don't have my insurance with him any more so very doubtful.
I hope you enjoyed it!
Absolutely, even though I had to extend my pinky whilst smoking to show respect for such a baller stick !

Truly sad to see single 34 go down. It's a Rocky Patel Decade Limitada (maduro) that is in my top cigars ever smoked category. This is my last of all my boxes. I'm a sad DogRockets tonight.
