A buyer on Ebay is returning a Peterson's Christmas pipe that I sold him in new condition with box. He told Ebay that he had smoked it 6 or 7 times and that it burned out where the bowl meets the shank. What do you think? If he smoked the pipe and it burned out, is that my responsibility or does it fall to the manufacturer?

Does the manufacturer offer a warranty? How long ago did he purchase it? And does your ebay account specify a warranty or money back guarantee?

I would think it falls to the manufacturer ,but is the warranty transferrable to a second owner?
Might need a proof of purchase to get them to replace it. How long did you have it before selling
it,and did you buy it new from a dealer or from ebay also?

I don't believe that a Peterson's would burn out in 6 or 7 smokes. Don't know how this could be resolved though.

Peterson offers a 90-day warranty. The buyer purchased it three weeks ago. I state that I will accept returns within a 14 day period.

The warranty states that Peterson's will replace the faulty pipe within 90 days of purchase. I doubt if it is transferable. I had it a little over one year before selling it. I bought it from a dealer.

If he is outside your return period I would say you are in the clear

This reeks of a scam to me. IDK how you'd burn a pipe out in 6 or 7 smokes - especially a Peterson. What's he smoking? Cordite?
I'd guess he's trying to screw you; saying it burned out and hoping you'll just refund the money. Either that or he bought it to use in a speed smoking competition.
I'd make him send it back for sure and hopefully you can verify that it is the pipe you sent and he hasn't switched it out.

I agree with Kayla and EZ on this one,I think the guy is trying something fishy. I wouldn't refund him anything.

If you say no, then you risk getting bad feedback on the sale. However (not sure if you're an e-bay guru or not so forgive me if I'm insulting you), you can appeal bad feedback to the e-bay management, and from what I hear, they're pretty good to work with on this stuff. What I would do is say no & risk the hassle - sounds like a scammer, and those people need to be draxxed. You can also block him from bidding on any of your other auctions.

Yea, I'm going to contest it. It sounds like a very shaky story. I've already received positive feedback on this transaction, so that is not a worry. I blocked them.

I wouldn't refund anything until he sends you the pipe. At least you can examine it, clean it & resell it if it still works!

Idk much about pipes, but I have close to 500 completed transactions on eBay. If you have a 14 day policy, you are covered. As you know, you'll need to appeal the impending feedback.

It reeks of B.S. for starters.
1) No way a Peterson burns out that fast. I think he is trying to return a different pipe that looks like the one you sold him.
2) It's outside of your stated return policy window. So there is no return option available to this chucklehead. End of story I would say.
If I were you, I would seriously reconsider your return policy. On what planet is it fair for you?

Try filing with eBay with THEIR buyerseller protection plan and see if they will cover it. It's been a spell since I've done it, but if you have a good rating, they may cover it. They covered me on something or another a few years ago, but I've been there for several years with close to 9000 rating @ 100%.....

Wow! That is a big number Sir.
This will probably sound stupid, but thank you for having so much integrity :american:

I'm goin' along with the bums who say the guy's a scammer.
Either that or he smokes like a vacuum cleaner, in which
case he must routinely burn out pipes.

Update: Pipe was returned to me and it does have a burnout. Ebay deducted $80 from my paypal account without asking me or telling me they were going to do it. I called the appeals section and they were NOT helpful. I am sending the pipe to Peterson's of Dublin t see if they will replace it.

That's a bummer! They usually send an email with dispute info first! That's a huge kick in the teeth

That is too bad. :(
Hard to believe the pipe burnt out so quick, especially for a Peterson.
Can you verify it was the same pipe?
Hopefully Peterson will come through for you or another positive resolution becomes available.

Yes, I checked to see if it was the same pipe and it is. I wish I had taken a picture before I packaged it up to send to Peterson's so that I could show you the hole. I am confident that Peterson's will do the right thing and replace it. I guess that it turned out okay; at least the buyer go his money back and there's a good chance that Peterson's will replace it. I have sent them a pipe in the past that developed a crack in the shank underneath the silver band and it leaked. They sent me a brand new Deluxe model.
I am not happy with Ebay, however. Don't like the way they yanked the money out of my Paypal account without so much as a warning. I have been searching for alternatives to ebay like Ebid and Bonanza but they are a wasteland for pipe lovers. Ebay charges 10% final value fee; the others charge 3%.

I wonder how they justify that. Considering you offer a 14 day return policy and that the complaint was beyond that window, I would have thought the ball was totally in your court.

They cannot justify it. The woman at the appeals department had no explanation other than "the case is closed and Ebay decided in favor of the buyer. Have a good day." Then she hung up on me.

I've got a little experience with ebay, and they've tilted so far in favor of the buyer over the past few years that I just don't want to use them anymore.
The bad news is they're seemingly the only game in town for a lot of things.

I'm putting this thing behind me now, this morning. It's not going to do any good to keep being angry about it. Thanks for all your words of encouragement, but it's part of the cost of doing business and working with the public.

I tried some other auction sites also trying to save on fees....All I heard or seen was the sound of crickets....

EBay strongly favors the buyer. Sellers have few other places to sell their items, but buyers have lots of other places to buy items.

Nothing like dealing in tobacco items on Ebay or any other network. I steer clear of items that can be scammed or at the very least do not deal with items where you can get your money back w/o a hassle.
