We have intentions of buying homes to rent. With that said there will no doubt be projects for me as far as fixing things up or updating older models so we bought a few things, one being a table saw.

I'm not a cabinet maker or carpenter for that matter, but am mechanically inclined and so I got to thinking about small projects to see what I'm capable of, and so a humidor came to mind.

Sealing being very important I wondered about wood glues and such and whether or not this could actually taint a box (sticks). Is there anything that must be avoided?

How does one ensure the lid seals well?

I'm not sure when (or if as I may likely just buy from Cheap Humidors as initially planned) I'd even get around to this as SWMBO has a projects list for me. I'm just curious and looking for info at this point.

You may want to start with some jewelry boxes for the wife to practice your joinery. Like you said the seal is very important. One thing I've seen people make a complete box out of whatever wood you want the outside to be then cut the top portion off to be the lid and line with SC.

the way i have seen humidors made the easiest is like what Trey said. build the entire box as a whole and than cut the lid off the top and than line with Spanish cedar and install the hinges. this is the easiest way to build any box like that. i have a really detailed instructions on on doing on that i can post later
