How much time do you let a briar pipe rest between smokes?

I'm slowly building up a collection of briars. I have 3 good quality ones and a couple of so so ones.

I know you shouldn't smoke back to back bowls in a briar, so I also have several cobs. Some days I enjoy several bowls of tobacco so the cobs come in handy for that.

But the question is, do you ever smoke your briars on back to back days, or do you like to give them at least 2 days rest? I've heard that you should give 48 hours between smokes. What say you bums?

I do smoke some of them on back to back days, but I'm going to start waiting longer as my collection builds up. I have 3 dedicated to aro's, but need to put more in the aro stack. I've kind of gone nuts in the 6-8 weeks I've been smoking pipes as by the end of the week when my orders come in I should be around 40 estate pipes. I've sold all of the high end pipes to fund my collection of run of the mill, but decent smoking pipes....

I've smoked three-four bowls from the same pipe in the same day, I just keep an eye on whether it is gurgling more than normal or if the smoke feels wet or steamy.I do however smoke the same mixture or class of mixtures on those occasions. I have ten briars and three cobs and a meer that I use regularly, but my pipe pouch only holds one pipe and the other tobacco pouches don't have a pocket for one, so when traveling I just have one with me and expect it to get used often.

I give my pipes 2 days rest between smokes most of the time. Sometimes when I am out somewhere with just one pipe I will smoke it 2 or 3 times in one night.

I've smoked 3 bowls back to back to back more than once in a cob.

Generally if you smoke the crap out a briar, give it a correspondingly long break. A bowl, I would just give 24 hours before smoking again. If I smoked 4 or 5 bowls in a day, I'd give the poor feller a good week to rest.

Some old timers just smoked the same pipe all the time until it was too caked to work anymore. Not that that's a good approach, but it won't ruin anything to smoke it well, and give it a good rest when you've moved on to a different pipe.

Pipes are a different breed of enjoying tobacco and like anything else one should want to take care of their equipment. If you've spent a good amount of money on your pipe does it make sense to abuse it by overheating it? There are briars that smoke well for around $25 and can be abused somewhat w/o having to worry about the cost of ruining it. Owning multiple pipes let's us have a fresh pipe anytime we want to smoke as I have about 10 of them. When the bowl gets so hot the enjoyment suffers to a degree. Just some rambling thoughts.

I've smoked 3 bowls back to back to back more than once in a cob.

I like to let a cob rest when the bottom of the bowl starts feeling damp, which takes several bowls usually.

I have my rotation and I simply go from pipe to pipe and then repeat. This keeps about 10 days between seconds bowls. I know guys that own 2-3 pipes and smoke 3-4 bowls a day. It's a matter of personal preference- nothing more, IMO.
