H. R. Sublimes...6.5x54. Morning smoke the closed foot gives a fast and perfect light, then there's the super sharp slow steady burn all the way, this time that was two hours and eighteen minutes.Along with some good hot coffee... did enjoy both my number one cigar and the coffee on this nice warm day.

Found this in the junk drawer...left over from the days of not knowing any better. Figured what the hell. So it has an impeccable construction and draw. But it's as boring and 1-dimensional as a week long paint drying festival. I can't believe people pay good money for these turds

Hello Pete,
Right with you on the inconsistent problem with cigars, when a small selection, say three to five are all over the place, that ends my desire to buy a box if they were from the same box. Have a few times gotten fivers from online retailers with widely varying wrapper shades and ranging from ok to mushy in feel. Am used to buying boxes most of the time, and haven't noticed a lot of consistancy problems when doing so, but wouldn't expect to see the problem there anyway. Also that is surely one of the best things about the Montecristos, that quality of construction time and time again has those who like the brand coming back for more of the same.
Bob.
Hi Bob,
If I had to venture a guess, cigars that don't pass QC muster may end up in smaller packs, especially on CigarBid (as a guess) where they may sell for a fraction of the listed price. The cigars that I've bought, smoked and seen that are called seconds would have formerly been called training cigars, made by apprentice or newer torcedors and they often are too tightly packed and made with lesser leaf - so that is what they are intended to be. How cigars are separated in QC certainly changes by manufacturer and brand.
2012 Pioneer Valley Especiales Churchill natural. Kirkland coffee light.
These were very good values (@~$1.20/stick) when I bought several boxes. Thought that they were all gone but found another box. Nice wrapper, well made with a consistent burn, they don't have the body or depth of an Avo but they've respectable smokes.

Sultan Yan Java Corona Ron Stacy Signature...4.75x42. One of a pair received from WNYTONY. Burned for one hour and 26 minutes.Paid close attention to this cigar, esp because Sumatra that is real Sumatra, is a favourite of mine. Took a few notes, and that I just don't do. Once I've smoked the second of the
pair will use these brief notes to compare to how I find the second one smokes. This cigar had a dark wrapper, much darker than the one I've left.

Oh man. I hope it was just a bad stick, but I tried to smoke something else a little while later, and all I could taste was cigarettes. I have one more in the humi, but I won't touch it for at least a year. I think this one was rebranded (now called "Legend"), so it was probably selling poorly and they made it look like a new release. It has good reviews online, so we'll see what time does with it.

Found a box of these with the box of Pioneer Valley Churchill the other day. Brighter taste and not as subtle. Burns a little faster and not as even as the Churchill. Churchill was better constructed. Definitely different blends but similar and again, they aged well and are excellent values. At @$5 the Churchill wouldn't raise an eyebrow and @$3.50 neither would the Toro. These cost @$1.30, shipped, from the Devil Sight.

Not certain it's featured on most of the My Father cigars, and tho it's only one part of the cigar construction, the cap on the My Father #3 Crema is the nicest of any cigar Ive smoked, a gentle taper rather than the " half ball"...can't think of a better description, but that cap on the Crema makes for perfect draw when cut and never a problem with the cap unraveling while smoking.Only a small thing, not just an aesthetic feature, but one that adds to smoking experience. Perhaps not on the same level as the sight of a pretty girl her walking along clad in her Spring dress improves a fine Spring day, but then, every little bit of fine (eye candy) helps.

Oddly it was your "cranberry/pomegranate and vodka" .that triggered memories of Purple plum juice and Shine...that for some long forgotten reason we called Maracaibo. A jar and the deck started tilting/revolving. Strange the power in that Plum juice.
Time for me to hunt down some of those Southern Draw cigars.

I know exactly what you mean, especially on the metaphor. I was sitting on campus yesterday afternoon smoking before class and the pretty girls in springtime dresses definitely improved an already beautiful day. It was about 75 degrees, and it seemed like everyone was out walking around. That (and the cigars) almost make school bearable, some days at least.

When was the last time Rocky packaged the 1992 with a maroon-colored band? 2011? 2010? Either way, this one was boxed in 2009, and today seems as good a day as any to light it up.

Through this first inch it has displayed a pleasant pepper tingle that quickly dissolves into a mix of really strong cedar with sugar cookie, cinnamon, and kahlua bringing up the rear. There's also a far-off vegetal note that sometimes comes through as pure tobacco in taste, but it's fleeting. The retrohale is smooth as can be, the nicotine isn't noticeable, and the burn is razorsharp next to a bright white ash. It's good with my coffee (Pilon) but the profile is bright and bitey and I think it would pair better with a mojito!

This cigar had a rounded Torpedo shaped top, beautiful brown wrapper with one very thin vein. After lighting up this cigar I got pepper, leather and coffee. This cigar is very heavy, but the draw and burn were excellent. This cigar was somewhat oily, with explosive flavors and very very full bodied.:facelick: Even though this cigar is full bodied it was never overpowering and it was extremely smooth. For my taste this cigar went so well with my coffee; I was surprised. I love this cigar now and I wonder how much better it would be with some more age. A review, a most enjoyable read. when I think of large cigars, it's the 6 -7 8 inchers with the plus , plus sized circumference. This one has to look huge.
But your write up certainly makes it sound like one well worth trying.by contrast I had to smoke my first cigar of the day indoors, with aircon working
tho it smoked well, missed being out doors. Enjoyed my second smoke on the front porch along with some good hot coffee and quiet, much better picked up the day a good bit.
If needed think I could forego smoking for a day, unlikely tho. But the Coffee, that I would not want to miss.

A new one to me from allusred, a Grimalkin Torpedo. I could find very little online about the cigar, but various sites put it at either 6.25 or 6.5 x 52. First impression out of the cello was outstanding, with a very smooth wrapper and an extremely firm pack. I also noticed that this was one of those 1 in 100 or so cigars that appeared to be absolutely symmetrical. Normally I don't really look that closely, but sometimes a cigar really catches me eye for being perfectly formed. Kinda like an especially pretty girl, but I guess I do look closely for those.
Either way, somewhat knowing Bob's tastes I was expecting expecting a more peppery start, but instead it was darkly sweet and fruity to me, sort of like a cabernet, with some light spices as well. There was a lot of flavor, but I'd call this more 'balanced' than 'strong'. The last couple inches of the cigar brought a lot more pepper, earthiness, and cocoa. I can't really say which section I liked more, but the first 2/3 were very different from my normal peppery Pepin and spicy Oliva cigars and I enjoyed it immensely.
Perfect construction, both draw and burnline, and a very slow burn as well clocking in at about 2'25" total. All in all an excellent cigar, thank you Bob!

Smoking one of my mistakes right now.
Rolled and bound a good lot of Brohibas today, will wrap them later today or tomorrow. I'll post a pic in the Torcedors subforum when they're done.
One was too narrow to fit in the mold, so I'm smoking it w/o wrapper. It's CT Broadleaf (from KY) and Nicaraguan seco and ligero. Binder is KY Dark Air. Good flave, moderate vitamin N. A little too "fresh," but that's to be expected in the circumstances.
Actually it's a double mistake, as I lit the wrong end and now the binder is unraveling :)

While I'm looking at the injured "knee", I'm wondering if what I first thought was a mask, might be a filter for flatulence.
Know better, but cain't let thet stop me, tried picturing what the poor girl in the photo might look like in a full length picture.
With two limbs with knees on the upper body she would be forced to walk upside down and backwards if she was to be able to see in the direction she was moving.
On the other hand if the one arm and one leg on the upper body,to keep it symmetrical were matched with the same, and on opposing sides, moving about would mean something worse than a crablike way of travel, even if all four limbs were of equal lenghts.
This led me to conclude that the person who provided that "precis/..... caption"
may well have originaly been from one of those countries when every other week someone is born with a tail growing from their chest and is regarded as a god.
~~~
I quit reading, or rather trying to read, one of our local newspapers when a story of a visiting head of state was pictured being greeted by dignitaries upon arrival at an airport.
The picture used,about a 5x7 inch photo, showed an attractive girl in a bikini on a beach,this ran in all editions of that newspaper that day.
~~~
George do you think there might be any chance that the estemed Dr.Hue Ming might be persuaded to provide some insight as to the true nature of the girl's "Knee' injury?
Now to justify inclusion in this thread, you will have to smoke something while constructing a reply. A slow burning Churchill sized cigar,or perhaps a pipe or two is advised.Along with something to drink of course.

Bob, as I read your post, puffing a SWAG Puro Dominicano Infamous and nursing a Bar Hopper IPA from South Street Brewery under a full moon, many thoughts come to mind.
The comment about the girl with too many knees, having to walk upside down and backward, brings to mind my brother's dog. Poor mutt is so ugly, my brother shaved the dog's hindquarters and taught it to walk backward. Said it was less embarrassing.
I have no idea when those dignitaries visited. If it was during the administration of President Bill Clinton, that picture may be from the actual event. Sounds like the kind of person Slick Willie would have invited and welcome with open...arms. (yes, let's go with arms)
I feel comfortable saying, if the good doctor were offered some grant money, she would surely publish some finding, whether she knew anything about this, or not.

Bob, you are correct that this is one very fat cigars.:loco: I really don't have a problem with large ring size cigars, but since this is a very powerful full bodied cigar I would have preferred a smaller ring size. I had been interested in this cigar for a while and I saw it on CBID and I put out a low bid not thinking that I would get it, but I got it.:glee: I will admit that this cigar was constructed extremely well and the box was absolutely beautiful. When my wife saw these cigars she told me in a very serious voice that this cigar box was hers and not to be taken out to the garage to be used for screws, nails or nuts etc. It really surprised me when she told me that she enjoyed the aroma of the cigar. Dang-it what else can a cigar lover wish for.:chicken:
When your wife likes the box and the smell of the cigar thats something right there.
Congrats.

Certainly Dr. Hue Ming, if provided with a Substantial grant would in her unmatchable style deliver a paper that would further embellish her standing as one of the most respected researchers of this century. One can only hope that she shall receive whatever $um required for her to devote the time to, in her clear and concise, not to mention beautifully constructed prose still another study for her multitude of fans to marvel at that might stand alongside some of her ground breaking research that has so entranced the academic world to date.

Paul Stulac Ghost...6x58. Smoked while watching the fights on HBO tonight, Cholotito vs Arroyo was a real treat and GGG continued to demonstrate just how good he is. The cigar along with a wee bit of Rum and coke was equally as enjoyable as the boxing, so a good evening, so far.
My ending to a great Saturday!

My first one of these Alex Bradley Mundial figurados. This was listed as 4.25x48, and the burn was good but I didn't care much for the flavor - too dry and woody for my taste.
I had the cello marked 5/14, so this might be one that should have been smoked newer.

Most of the cigars I'm smoking now from 2-3 years ago are still good, but I don't notice a major difference usually. I have had a couple that I thought had declined though.
Too bad I have no idea what this was like a couple years ago. You're smart to smoke one now and put another one away.

First one today was a Hirochi Robaina. Good flavor, but had to almost continually touch up the burn line which got pretty old.

Then I tried another one of these Obsidian Half Coronas. I tried 2 when I bought them about a year and a half ago, and they were absolutely repugnant. Time has helped out the flavor significantly, but they still have a burned wax aroma. I might try one in another year and a half and toss 'em in the trash if they don't lose that funk.

It actually seemed to open up about midway. I ended up with a bit over 40 mins with it probably due to the slow draws. It became much smokier afterwards. Not a bad stick if the rest aren't like that in the beginning.

Caldwell Iberian Express Gibralter Extra Jamon Jamon...4.5x44. Long name for a relatively short cigar that I recieved from WNYTONY. Total burn time was right at one hour and twenty minutes. Once lit this firm, but not hard cigar let me know it was full strength ,some bite when retrohaling.
Fourteen minutes in and the retrohale was a bit milder, noticed at the twenty five minute mark that had dipped a tad in terms of strength, still I was expecting it might well come screaming back up before the finish. That did not happen, but doubt the strength dropped much below full at any time. One touch up when the burn line got a bit wavy, tho likely it would have self corrected quickly if left alone. All in all a good, well constructed cigar smooth open draw all the way. Do think I might well have put it down had it upped the power beyond its starting point. Don't think I'd tackle one of these before at having gotten that morning coffee fix in. Would never happen, since it's very unlikely I could cut and light a cigar before at least two cups of hot coffee, never too certain I'm alive until the coffee kicks in to be honest.
This is one that will get your attention once lit.

Hi Brian.
When I buy, I tend to buy i bulk. Probably a psychologically problem linked to my starting work at a cigar shop at such a tender age (10 :)) where I got used to unpacking cartons with many boxes and I still relax when stacking and storing. Even so, I try to smoke samples of each brand and series ROTT as a baseline but the truth is that many 'boutiques' are inconsistent even in a 5-pack and a single cigar is not always representative of the rest. Tends to be why I will buy some codger brands that I've found to be consistent over many years.
Age, past a point, isn't always good (and all of my cigars are at least 2 years old). Same with pipe tobacco. Think of it like wine where Bordeaux (reds) age well but Beaujolais doesn't and many whites tend to have limitations on optimal age.
in 2009 I bought over 600 Fonseca 1907 from JR based on about 20 samples. The large shipment are bad sticks, from taste to burn to construction (they look better than they smoke). Age shows their inconsistencies (they now all have terrible draw) and the taste is worse than when fresh. Yes, I smoke my mistakes and I've been paying for these turkeys for years but every time I smoke one I think, "one less'.
Been smoking a lot these past few months, lately Pioneer Valley Especiales (Churchill is better than the Toro) and 20 packs of Pinar Del Rio. Currently a Pinar Habano Sun Grown. The best that I've had (recently) are 2009 Oliva Saison Rothschilds that are good, solid construction, rich taste but with a little edge. These Saison have 3 years age and could use another 2 optimally. With a cup of Kirkland coffee, light.

Hey Pete!
Thx for sharing your experience! One of the things that I truly love about this place. 8)
From the various conversations about resting/aging, I'very come believe that with NC's acclimation is all that's needed with most. I've had a few (typically less expensive sticks) that I believe got better with a longer rest. And the higher end stuff that I have had the pleasure to smoke, seem to only lose it's vitamin N or "pepper bomb" status.
Smoking ROTT to establish a baseline sounds like the thing to do. And I guess I've been lucky (or I'm still too new to this game to realize the difference), where my 5'ers seem to have been consistent.
Great to hear from you Pete!

Never apologize for being 'new', you've got good taste buds.
I buy most of my stock off of a site that shall not be named. Prices are great but I suspect that they are often the lesser yield. Cigars are all different even though we expect them to be the same (that's part of what we pay for). No manufacturer can insure consistent yield so those selected by QC as inferior either 'taint' the better product or an alternate sales method is found - me :). I've had my share of winners from this site and I've smoked ~1000 sticks over the past 12 monthsr but I still have >1500 to go (sadly ~200 are Fonseca 1907) and then I'll probably go back to same site and go fishing again.

Nice review Bob. Those little guys kicked my butt - glad to see they came across strong for someone else.
For me today a tasty Tat Black Petite Lance courtesy of Rocket Scientologist I knew this one wasn't going to last long after it got unpacked !
Thanks Brad

Tony,
Figure I could've gotten at least another five minutes on the cigar, but for me it was just a full cigar.
Can't really a proper review because tho I do get the flavour changes while smoking only seldom can I put a name to any.
So, I'm just a cigar smoker.

Once I've had some more coffee to stay awake may well try to find another cigar to smoke, tho likely that wont be 'nother of the Ultra Premium Moose herd.

2012 Pinar del Rio Habano Sun Grown Toro with Diet Pepsi.
Proxy for several Pinars; Seleccione,Classico and Sun Grown. Seleccione's the best, Classico good and Sun Grown ranges from fair to good based mostly on differences in taste. A decent sample bundle, they cost ~$29.00 shipped for 20 and are better (especially the Seleccione) with the age.

Trying' another new smoke I recently bought. Though I don't care much for their standard Gold line as it seems a little too mild (maybe the Churchill would be better?) I find this has a very nice flavor! Smokes nicely too. I'm finding I like the Corona size over my initial favorite Robusto.

Seems someone's smoking these, about time to find a few more little ones...or a lengthier version.
