View Full Version : Take a look: are these pipes worth a darn?

Always kinda wanted a strait, unfiltered military mount pipe. Can't seem to find one anywhere... well I found a Dunhill but that one was 700 bucks. Wish this one was a smooth finish but other than that it fits the bill. The Dunhill wasn't a smooth finish either...

Afternoon Bill,
Butz-Choquin, the brand has been around since the mid nineteenth century but they were 'late-comers' to St. Calude (~1950). I only know their reputation through the 1980s and they were a respected French maker.
The bowl is machine made but it's pretty certain that the $700 Dunhill bowl is too. Both shapes have acceptable wall thickness and good proportions. Can't venture a guess on their smoking potential without knowing their briar.
Nice look and the mounting (sterling) appears well rendered. Personally (of course) I'd only have interest in the billiard :).
Hope that helps.

Well yes, I'm looking at the billiard.
I'm open to alternatives though if you know of any. What I'd really like is a smooth finish with thick walls, straight shank, no filter, no p-lip, no 'system' and military mount... and not some huge pipe that won't fit in my hunting coat pocket. Don't care if the spigot is silver, brass or what. Don't really care if the pipe is a 'looker', I just want it to smoke well. I've looked into Stanwells but couldn't find a pipe that didn't have at least one undesirable feature. Acrylic is more desirable than vulcanite just because I don't want to deal with oxidation, mouth feel notwithstanding.

You obviously need it. You can afford one little pipe. It's a great deal... just think of how much money you'll save buying that pipe over, say... a Dunhill. 600 bucks at least! How can you afford NOT to buy it?

Hi Bill,
I believe that Stanwell bowls (pipes) are now made in Italy but without seeing them in hand I can't say of that's a positive or negative, possibly made by Paronelli. You might find some pics of Paronelli pipes to compare to the Stanwell (look at the finishing technique).
You've probably already searched eBay for military mount pipes but if not, this is a link to that search (currently):

Know that one of those is a FAUX spigot slash army mount. I forget which one. Turned me off from buying it. The metal on the shank doesn't actually go inside and the stem contacts wood.
EDIT:
Here's a quote from a site...
"*The Stanwell take on the Army Mount, like many European makers now really should not be classed as such. The use of the 9mm filter makes it almost impossible to use a true army fitting. A standard 9mm filter tenon is used to hold the mouthpiece to the pipe, with the nickel band just acting as a decorative feature.*"

Well the search for an army mount pipe continues...
Got my order in from P&C today just to find out the Stanwell is indeed a fake army mount.
Its just a regular mortise and tenon under an 'army mount looking ferule'
This after sending an email (to no avail) prior to the order to verify that it was indeed a true army mount.
How disappointing. I'm sending this back...

Have you looked into the Peterson Irish Made Armys? I had one at one time and it was nice... Have no idea what happened to it, but it had a plain old silver cap on the briar and a tapered stem that fit quite well.

I did but the only ones I found were 'system' pipes and I didn't want one of those. Savinelli makes a few 'spigot' pipes but IDK if they're also fakes. Plus it seems they don't have a straight that I've found.

Odd, I don't remember mine being a system. The stem was normal and I'm positive a cleaner passed straight through to the bowl without catching on a second hollow area. Hmmmmpf.

Heard back from P&C
...it appears the design was changed when production was moved to Italy. Unfortunately, the rep says all their Army Mount pipes now use the design you received. You will not be able to get a new Stanwell pipe with the traditional army mount stem you seek. If you are stuck on a Stanwell pipe your only hope is to look for an older Estate Stanwell.
D'oh!!!
Well P&C is good about taking returns - they send a prepaid label and all that. I still hate returning stuff tho.

Technically, the canadian is the long, oval shank with a taper stem. The Lumberman is the same with a saddle bit (step-down).
You have a calabash, a couple of cased meerschaums, what appears to be a Savinelli Guibleo d'Oro lumberman (natural carve), a Hilson type leather clad. Couple of old gimmick pipes, etc. Great haul! Is 20 pipes right?
Can you list the nomenclature? I'm especially interested in the pipes at the top and sides (right and left) that have briar inserts on the stems. The pipe on the right (that I refer to) is the large freehand, part bent with the top of the pipe looking like it's mushrooming out. The one on the left is a tall, light angle, rusticated dublin (carved). I might be able to tell you something about many of the pipes but these two piques my curiosity in particular.

Girl! The only thing we're keeping secret - per my wife - is the name. We're each proposing two names and then giving it some time to see if anything sticks, that's as much info as I'm allowed to divulge!
Back to pipes: Three years ago I spent three months passing on a much more squashed, black rusticated, L'Anatra. It was in my cart a thousand times but I never pulled the trigger. No idea why.
My wife was paying attention. It was her intention to give it to me for Christmas, so she created an account at sp.com and put it in her cart but held off for ONE DAY to figure out what tobacco to include in the purchase... When she went back the next night it was gone. Bless her heart, she contacted over a dozen websites both here and overseas and none had a similar model, nor could (or would) they order one.
Since then I have looked and looked and finally, just last month, I found a very similar model - maybe 85% there, much closer in shape than what I just bought - at a site overseas, but they were asking over $300US plus shipping. Too rich for my blood.
