For me it has always been briars, more style and cleaner smoke.Meers, with the fancy carving and all just seem to be shelf pretties, and cobs are utilitairian, good for a work pipe but not what I would carry to a Herf or B&M event.

I had to vote other. My favorite smoking pipe is my Gourd Calabash. While the bowl is Meer, the Gourd body makes it smoke unlike any of my other Meers or other pipes for that matter.

Hi Jack,
I was thinking of materials and never considered calabash although I did consider porcelain and metal. You make the case that Calabash could/should have been included and your answer is on the mark.

I don't have much (any) experience with many different materials but going off looks alone I vote briar. but really any wood that shows nice grain. I'm shallow and all about looks lol.

My vote is probably not very informed, as my only experience has been with cob and briar. Although I like the ruggedness and low expense of a cob, between the two, I prefer the way a briar smokes.

My pocketbook says cob. I could always keep new cobs on hand and have a lot of money left over for tobacco... But I just can't stay away from briar. They're just too pretty.

Order of what I like: Meer, briar, cob, clay
Proportional order of what I actually have: Cob, clay, briar, meer.

Thanks for voting guys.
I was a bit surprised, thought cobs would have some votes.

I imagine the cobs are kind of in the same category as the daily "beater" watch. It is used a lot because it does a good job and you are not afraid to mess it up. But it doesn't compare to the good watch you only break out when you want something nice.

I have a few and they're good smokers, but they just don't make it as a "favorite."

While it's not my favorite pipe, my Mark Twain is up there.
