It's from the oils in the tobacco leaf.

As it ages the oils are secreted from the leaf and leave behind a residue. It's a good thing and looks nothing like mold.

As stated, plume is the crystallization of sugars or oils from the leaf that have collected on the surface. Plume develops under certain conditions of temperature, humidity, and time that are favorable to cigars. Mold, as you know, is microbiological growth that also develops under certain conditions of temperature, humidity, and not always so much time, that is unfavorable for cigars.
It is debatable whether plume actually contributes to the enhancement of a cigar, or if it is merely an indicator of a well aged cigar stored under optimal conditions.

Thanks for explanation!
My one question - do we expect plume to develop on an entire box of the same cigar, stored under the same conditions? Or would we see it on only one or a handful of cigars out of the same box? Curious if it's so rare that even all cigars in the same box won't develop plume.
I've never seen it in real life myself, of course.

It generally happens to all the cigars from the box stored in that particular place.
There are a few ways to tell the difference:
1) It's crystallized not a mold-like flowering...it really looks like suuuuper tiny salt crystals, microscopic.
2) It doesn't wipe off with a brushing of your finger or even a damp towel.
3) It sparkles if a pic is taken with flash.
4) It generally covers the entire wrapper of the cigar, mold tends to grow out from one specific spot.
5) If you look at it from arms length, it looks like an old, dusty cigar. It look like something you'd find in an attic and you blew all the thick dust off.

Appreciate the info, thanks!
Maybe I'll witness it myself someday.

I work with fresh produce and an excellent example of plume is often found on fresh plums. I am yet to see plume on cigars, but apparently it happens.

Wow... never thought of that brilliant comparison... concise and descriptive. Hope you don't mind when I share that thought in the future Old Smokey.

Feel free to use it anytime. It really is an easy way to see what plume actually looks like. Also, I am very happy to see you found us Bums. I look forward to reading your posts. People like yourself participating and sharing your knowledge is priceless to us new smokers who love cigars and all that they offer.
