I had my first Lancero the other night - a My Father someone sent me in an exchange. It was also my first My Father cigar. Not sure if it was the cigar size or the blend, but it blew me away. I hopped onto Small Batch and ordered some more Lanceros and they just arrived today:

5 My Father
5 Don Pepin Blue
5 San Lotano Oval

What other lanceros are smoking good now? Who else likes these things? Who hates these things?

Let's discuss!

I've seen quite a few posts from people who swear by them. I have to say, I am tending toward smaller ring gauges lately. They just seem to have much better flavor for me.

Any self respecting tat whore should be on the look out for the Tat lance sampler. :stogie:

Ones that I've tried personally, the MF, and DPG blue are both great. Tat black petite lance was good. JD Howard reserve single action anther PL that was pretty good. If you like crowned heads they are going to have another lance out sometime soon not sure what blend it is based on though.

I've got a stack of various lanceros waiting for it to cool off a bit.

Haven't tried any yet...I like the smaller RG along the lines of corona, but the lancero seems a bit longer than I prefer. Maybe eventually...

That My Father #4 is one of my favorite lanceros, and one of my favorites overall actually.

I like the DPG Blues too. The Illusione Holy Lance natural and maduro are really nice too. Same with a couple different Viajes, and the Platino is my favorite I think.

I've been loving the Room101 Daruma for a couple years, and the La Aurora 107 lancero is great too. And of course the Oliva V lance, yeah baby.

I love the lance and have had the pleasure of smoking a bunch of them. I don't think I have ever smoked a bad one, but would say my favorite is the Regius Exclusivo USA Extra (non Claro) Red Band. There are a bunch to try and the Tatuaje 10ct sampler is a good one to get your feet wet.

I know. I feels like you need to quit your job in order to smoke a lancero. lvfcrook1503 told me he spends 2 1/2 hours on a lancero! who has that kind of time? I was at 1 hr 45 minutes myself and that was about as long as I could handle. Looks like the 15 I ordered will be lasting me for a long time.

Heh...ya got that right!! Only time I can smoke for that long is while camping and have nothing but time to relax.
You could always trade some fellow bums a few of your 15 for a 10-er of ghurkas...I know how much you love those...

You may gather from my user name that I am partial to this vitola.

One of my go-to smokes is a lancero that shall not be named in this forum. The cigar I keep a few of on hand for outrageously special occasions is also a lancero that will not be named in this forum.

These are great right off the truck (except the Padron), and even better with a year or two on them:

Oliva V if you like a medium-bodied, creamy, baking-spicey, sometimes mildly cedary cigar.

Blanco 9 and 262 Paradigm if you want sweet, earthy, heavier-bodied smokes.

262 recently released an Allegiance lancero. I haven't tried it yet, but Clint has never rolled a blend I didn't like, even the ones that don't come in a lancero.

Padron makes a lancero in the X000 blend, although it doesn't carry a number designation. Has to be aged - kind of harsh ROTT.

If you can find them, PDR Capa Madura lanceros are smokeable fresh, and only get better all the way up to 3 years resting. Definitive Brazilian maduro flavor profile.

Others have mentioned the Illusione Holy Lance. Remarkable smoke in any wrapper. In fact, if you want to taste what different wrapper leaves do to a blend, try the claro, natural and maduros. The blend is so remarkably consistent that you'll easily detect the textbook flavors imparted and enhanced by the wrappers.

If you don't think you'll have time to smoke a whole lancero, cut it in half (not lengthwise :poke: ) and smoke the foot half first. You won't get exactly the same experience, as lanceros are blended to deliver a flavor profile through the entire stick. But if the cigar is any good to start with, you'll still enjoy both halves.

No way will they survive all that long.
You will find that you are able to find a little more time to smoke then and that two hour time frame may soon be your minimum when you set one alight.
The smoking time expands along with the enjoyment.

Haven't smoked any Tatuaje Lanceros, but they should be good ones.
The My Father is my current favourite in this size, but there are many, many I've never smoked.
Do remember a few years ago trying a variety, that may well have included a Tatuaje, the El Triunfador I liked least,
a Padill...,not sure but think it was a Miami, maybe 1932 ?... made by D.P. Garcia for me was clearly the best of them.

I haven't tried the oscuro. The Capa Madura were really affordable last time I bought some. I'm a sucker for Brazilian maduros, and they hit the mark very well. A Dominican oscuro wrapper sounds interesting, too - may have to give them a shot sometime.

You've put me in a touch spot Jimmy. You want to buy all these lanceros for me but you also want me to quit my job to smoke these insanely long cigars. So I'll have time to smoke them after I quit but I won't have any money to buy them! A true cigar paradox if there ever was one.

My sig-line says much, LOL. Probably my top-3 tasties right now would be Asylum's 99 problems, CAO's Flathead Piston, and Illsusione's HL.
Oliva V is a solid, consistent choice, and I get them from time to time. Lesser known, and lesser cost, is Estilo Cubano's lance. I am also fond of El Credito's El Perritos, and Parodi's Kentucky Cheroots.

Looks like we're pretty aligned. I agree with all your Yeas that I've tried - Asylum, La Riqueza, HL, Serie V, and El Triunfador.

I haven't had the lancero version of the Kristoff Sumatra, but I sure didn't like the toro/robusto size I had of that one. My Herrera Esteli petit lancero wasn't great either, nor was the Fratello corona I tried. I've still got a NAS from the original release almost 2 years ago that I haven't tried, which reminds me I need to give it a whirl.

Bill, I have found smoking Lance's slow makes them a much better smoke.

To quote advice given me long ago by He-Who-Herfs-On-Turf, a lancero should always be on the verge of going out.

Nuts 'n' bolts of that is:

1) draw less per puff than you would with a larger RG cigar. Maybe as little as half as much.
2) draw more slowly with each puff than you would with a larger RG cigar. About as slow as you can draw without letting it go out.
3) wait plenty of time between puffs. Go toward the long end of the 30-60 second standard.

If you get all those balanced, you'll get maximum enjoyment from your lancero. Not every cigar will stay lit well enough if you take all three steps to their maximums. IMO, they are listed in order of importance. That is, shorten the rest time a little bit before speeding up the pace of your draw, and only increase the amount of your draw as a last resort.
