View Full Version : Small Vitola Smokes

I wonder if there are any folks here who prefer (or smoke exclusively) the smaller vitolas whose experience I could draw on?
I guess I define "small vitola" as roughly anything in between a 4X32 cigarillo, and a Corona, as well as the the fatso sticks that are big ring gauge but short (like Nub, etc).
I like these for two main reasons-- being cursed with a taste for strong pipe tobacco/medium-full type cigars while at the same time having a rather lack luster nicotine tolerance (even a Robusto can seem to drag on for a long time and feel like a chore to get to the point where I don't feel like I'm wasting the stick by putting it out, which often means being testy with my nicotine threshold), as well as the financial; the smaller vitolas seem to generally cost substantially less in addition to just feeling more satisfied when I'm done and not like the smoke was an endeavor that I only enjoyed and savored the first half of. And by the way, I am a very slow smoker as well, out of necessity to avoid uncle Nic throwing his weight around (plus, as a primary pipe smoker, sipping pays off big time in terms of flavors!) I can stretch a 4X32 cigarillo well over half and hour, maybe 40 minutes.
In addition to wanting to learn more about what y'all consider to be the best small vitola sticks around, I wonder what's in the sub 3 dollar, and even sub 2 dollar range? Some of the Oliva and PDR overruns come in the petite corona and half corona vitolas, but I've yet to pick any up.

Room101 offers several of their blends in a size named Papi Chulo that are 4x42. The Namakubi are excellent, as well as the Master Collection series. Also the Tatuaje Havana VI Verocu No. 5 is another great cigar that is in a 4x40 size. Guerilla Warfare by Viva Republica has a Petit Corona that is 4x41. I pickup several of these every time I visit my local B&M. Either of these cigars provide 40-45 minutes of pure bliss.
Another one that is popular is the Illusione Rothchildes that are 4.5x50 sized. Smoke time is a little bit longer, almost an hour the few I have smoked. They are not my favorite though, but others love and rave about them.

I would add the Viva Republic Guerrilla Warfare, L'at Travi, Muwat Baitfish, and Papas Fritas to list of the really good ones I have had. I too have been finding a lot of my smokes have been petite corona size to robusto while porching it with the wife. They just seem to work out to the right size I need after the kids go to bed and before I need to go to bed.

The Viva Republicas are good cigars, but they're pretty much asskickers nicotine-wise I thought, especially for their size.
I like the mixed filler Arturo Fuente Equisitos, especially the maduro. I got some Cao Brazilia cigarillos a while back and they're good too.
I can also tell you to steer clear of the tins of Obsidian half-coronas. I bought a bunch of little cigars for quick smokes last winter and most were fine, but the Obsidians were repugnant.

The best small cigar I have had is the Jericho Hill Shots. If you have never tried one I highly recommend them.

The Illusione Rothchildes are a big winner in my book. The Bait Fish and exquisite Maduro are good as well.

Love the smaller vitolas - over half my stash is under 5"
Agree with all of the above recommendations - even the Obsidian avoidance.
In the $4-$5+ range I'd add the Tat Noellas, AF Short Story, Curivari Petite Cafe, Illusione Bombone, Padron '26 #35, Padron '64 Principe, Cubanacan Chatos, Leccia White Corona, Oliva V Melanio Petite Corona and Asylum Petite Corona
In the $3 and under I'd add Surrogates Cracker Crumbs, CAO LX2 Bam, CAO MX2 Daggers, Tat Petite Caz, Tat Petite, H Upmann Vintage Cameroon Petite Corona, Perdomo Habano Petite Corona and JDN Rosalones Machito
Well, that's a start anyways

I will second the My Uzi Weighs A Ton in the Baitfish size.

I love me a short smoke. Listen to the lads above, they know their stuff, and I can only echo what they say. Although I thought the Obsidian half coronas were smoke-able, just not anything remarkable. Another one would be the RoMa Craft Intemperance EC Charity, and BA Intrigue. Both rich and full of flavour, even if they are $5-6/stick.

BIG +1!!! Aguineapig, I favor corona's as well as little gordo's. For cheap, I would look into CI "Super Premium Seconds". Villazon made $2/stick-ish, and corona's available. Also, JR alternatives. Your nic tolerance will come. Won't be awful long, and you'll be hitting JdN Antano gran consul's!

+2 on the JH Shots, and all the smaller Tats. The Surrogate Cracker Crumbs and L'atellier Traveliurs are both excellent and you can get 5 packs for around 15 bucks.

Thanks, just checked-- a bundle of 25 coronas in the 5x40 vitola is only 35 bucks, under a buck anda half a stick! I see a bundle or several in my future.

My favorite bargain smoke is the Flor de Oliva series. Yes, they are bigger than the vitola sizes you asked for, but for $2 a cigar, you shouldn't feel bad if you just smoke half of it.
They are really really good, especially for just $2/cigar.

I'm a cheapskate! I'm partial to all the La Aurora petites and minis like Minos Finis and, Shrapnel, Principes etc..
The little Irish made sticks in the box like Alta Gracia. Oliva makes excellent minis and for a few bucks more the Ashton Senoritas. Fuente Cubanitos are strong.
I need to try the Swedish dry cured minis like Avanti soon too.
Both CI and CBid have great deals on dozens of small box goodies. Im going to send you a sampler of what I just ordered Eric. Nice to have you here my friend!

Petite corona sized cigars are something I'm always looking for. Big cigars are great but when you only have a half hour you need to look robusto or smaller. I like some of the tins when I can get them cheap... CAO Lx2, Italia and Brazil along with Padron Corticos maduro I can pick up in the $12-$18 range per tin of 6. I've also purchased some cheaper ones... Famous Buenos Maduritos 4x40 aren't bad for under a buck a stick but need about a year in the humidor. I also like the Rocky Patel Juniors box of 40... And lately I've been buying the AJF puro authenticos and got a box of MF Tres Reynas coronas and these are delish. Ideally, I want a Padron Delicias maduro for $1 a stick...or as close as I can get to that.

Just checked these out, they look really interesting especially at a buck a stick. Having to let them rest doesn't bother me, my attention is already divided so many ways between cigars and my mainstay pipe blends that It'd be easy to forget about some sticks for a while.

Arturo Fuente Maduro Exquisitos are yummy! La Aurora Leoninos Corojitos are decent short filler smokes that you can pick up for $50 for 75 right now at CI. Not a great smoke, but a medium full stick that will get you by...
