My wine enthusiast 28 bottle cooler showed up today. Pretty happy with how it looks. Was a scratch and dent I bought off amazon delivered for $150 and I can't find a scratch or dent on it.

Now onto the de-stinkification process. Starting with some baking soda and hot water, I'm going to give it a coat inside and let it dry, then wash it out and place some baking soda in a dish in it closed for a few days. Not actually getting much of a smell from it to begin with so I think it'll probably clean up easy. Should I have it plugged in so the electronics get aired out as well while I'm cleaning it?

Not sure about plugged in. Congrats, though

No, I wouldn't plug it in while it has moist baking soda inside.

What you CAN do is after the water+baking soda cycle is put baking soda in some dishes and plug it in. Here in the States they sell baking soda in little cardboard boxes where you can tear off one of the sides and it has a mesh on it. If you have those, just use a couple of those.

definitely do not plug it in. and put newspaper in there. that will help take the stank out much quicker

oh and congrats on joining the club.

Cleaned out the baking soda this afternoon and filled it with newspaper and a bowl of baking soda. Hopefully it'll clear out quick

Did you plug it in? Best case scenario the fans help circulate the stinky air particles into the newspaper and baking soda. The only problem would be if the fans are powerful enough to cause the baking soda to start blowing around inside :)

I'm not sure if all wineadors have circulation fans or if they are like small refridgerators which don't because the internal volume isn't very large.

Yes once I cleaned the baking soda/water out, I gave it a good wipe down with hot water. Then went over it with a towel to get the water out.

Placed a big bowl full of baking soda in the bottom and crinkled up as much news paper as I could find. I figured if nothing else running it will help circulate the air as you said.

Thermoelectric wine coolers have a fan that blows air across the peltier. They are not strong enough though to create any movement of baking soda on the shelves. Most you can put your hand right in front of and only feel a slight breeze.

Yea it seems just enough to move the air around so I'm hoping having it run will help the newspaper and baking soda remove the smell.

Going to hit a couple stores this weekend to see if I can source some spanish cedar for the drawers and thinking some zebra wood or cocobolo for the fronts.

If you can't find any Spanish Cedar locally you can order from Bristol Valley Hardwoods. I got all mine for my cabinet conversion from them. They have all different widths and will even cut to size before shipping to you.

Me too. I think I may have found a place in Regina that sells a lot of exotic lumber and such so I'll be hitting them up this weekend. I sold most of my woodworking tools when we moved to Saskatchewan so I'll be limited with what I have to work with so they won't be as nice as wineadors.com but I'll do the best I can with what I have. Hoping to find some assorted sizes to make it a bit easier and with any luck some nice wood for the drawer fronts but we'll see what they have...

Well no local suppliers but I found a place in Quebec that ships reasonably. order placed today so should have the spanish cedar in about a week depending on how fast they ship. Now on the search for something to use for drawer fronts. Really like cocobolo but can't seem to find a decent price on it for the sizes I want. Placed my spanish cedar cigar sleeve in it just to see what it would do and within a couple hours it's all you could smell when opening the door so smell wise it's ready to go.

Blake bluenoser, thanks to you and another brother, I'm finally motivated into pulling the trigger on one this Friday. Congrats....you got a sweet deal too. I was a little unsure about the cleaning process until reading your thread.....so thanks there too! I be watching your set, up and seasoning steps closely.Good luck with your SC hunt and shelf build!:thumb:

Got the shipping notification today for the SC and ordered some Paduak for fronts. My HF beads should be here today so I should be able to get them going this afternoon. I'm on vacation this week so hoping everything shows up this week while I have lots of free time to get it together.

Spanish cedar should be here by friday and padauk by next wednesday. So drawers should be in place by this weekend just awaiting their fronts. I rigged up an old laptop cooler to put in it today. It's too wide to lay at the bottom so I'm undecided if I want to leave it standing up at the back like in the picture or trim the plastic so I can lay it on the bottom but either way it'll definitely help circulate air well. The cheap hygrometer I bought has me a bit concerned about RH in the thing. With 3 bovedas and the HF beads in there since monday it's jumping everywhere from low 70s to the mid 80s so I'm pretty sure it's going to get turfed. I have an adjustable analog one on it's way so at least once I calibrate it I'll know where I'm really sitting.

Spanish cedar showed up today so I slapped it all together. Just waiting on my padauk to show up to make the drawer fronts. Definitely no pro job but for nothing but a bunch of hand tools and my half assedness it came out better than I expected. Good enough for who it's for. I'm sure I'll tweak a few things and such as I go but I've got a few extra pieces left over to make any changes I want to make in the future. Might look at building a sliding drawer in a drawer like Automator showed in his thread but that's a ways down the road. Once this things built it'll sit nearly empty for a while as I'm told we're going on a spending freeze, working on a down payment to get out of renting...

Enough of my ramblin, this is how she sits now...

Thanks. Really looking forward to seeing how it looks with the drawer fronts on, should be here early next week.

Just threw a couple Tupperware containers with sponges and distilled water in to start the seasoning process. 1 in each drawer and 1 on the shelf. Can't wait.

I've decided I'm going to build one more little drawer in the little spot on the left. It'll be a good spot for more humidity control if I find the 1lb HF isn't enough or I want to spread it around a little more. Currently all of the 1lb will be going on the bottom in a "pantyhose" bag. Opinions on this, Should I separate them or just leave them together?

Zeede
07-16-2015, 09:43 PM
I would have some kind of humidity control in each drawer.

bluenoser
07-20-2015, 09:17 PM
I've split the beads between the top small drawer (in a panty hose bag) and the bottom in a tin pan and will be putting 2 boveda's in each drawer so that should take care of humidity. Here's a couple pics of it now that the drawers have the Padauk fronts on. Was planning on giving them a coat of something for some shine but really like how they look now. I have a silver rimmed analog hygrometer coming that's going to be mounted in the bottom drawer and then a hygroset that will be, most likely, on top of the X shelf. Just to decide what I want for drawer pulls. The wife thinks silver/chrome and I think something dark like a brushed nickel or black... sigh... third world problems right?

Hey Blake, I wouldn't coat the fronts with anything. They look great, and should be ok in the stable environment. Brushed nickel or stainless hdwe (JMO).
I really like your work, especially the "X" shelf. Original work, all yours, and you should be very proud. Now the other reason for my response......I remember when you first joined......I think you had an old pipe, maybe a cob, and an acrylic lock top jaridor for your handful of sticks.....now you're on the Canadian Men's Downhill Team bwaahaahaahaahaa. Drawers & shelves being filled, boxes on order, yeaaaahhhh!!!! You go brother, way to hit that damn slope.

Me too but it'll be a while. I've been told we're on a spending freeze once its done to work on a down payment so for now it'll be home to my meager stash. But once we get the whole house thing settled... Lets just say I'm making a list...

Not much of an update but put the 2 hygrometers in and have been working on getting the RH stable. It's dead on 65 at the bottom but hits about 70 at the top. I have about 3/4 lb hf in the bottom and 1/4 in the little drawer plus 2 65 bovedas in each drawer so I'm working on placement of my laptop cooler to see if I can get it to settle a little closer. Also seeing as its within useable RH I might load it up today and see if getting some stock in it might help even it out.

It's now spiked to 74 in the top but staying 65 near the bottom. So I took the beads out and dried them nearly all white and moved my dual fan so both fans are up in the top section blowing forward, hopefully this will help. Really hoping to get my cigars in there this weekend but we'll see...

Zeede
07-25-2015, 12:24 PM
Are you using anything besides the analog hygrometer to take readings at the bottom? They're notoriously inaccurate, and require periodic calibrations.

bluenoser
07-25-2015, 12:29 PM
I also have a hygroset digital calibrated to 65. If I put it at the bottom its dead on 65 but currently sitting on top of my little shelf reading 73. Hopefully with some patience the hf beads I dried out will take care of it. I'm wondering if I should put the larger pack of hf beads at top and the smaller on bottom.

The issue is that moist air rises. You're always going to have a little variance from top to bottom, although a fan helps.

bluenoser
07-25-2015, 02:12 PM
I'm expecting a variance but am hoping to get it much less than the 8 its at now. A little more fiddling and I'll get it.

bluenoser
07-25-2015, 06:32 PM
Well it's leveled off some, still a couple % off but I'll monitor it, put a couple 62 bovedas in the top to help bring it down some and decided to load it up as all of my cigars have been stored at 62 so they'll help bring it down some too. Still have another laptop fan I might put in the bottom too to add a little more circulation but that's yet to be decided.

Jar will be used for infused sticks and currently have the X shelf loaded with Quesada tributos and the chillin moose sticks

http://i734.photobucket.com/albums/ww347/Gsxblaze/temporary_98.jpg (http://s734.photobucket.com/user/Gsxblaze/media/temporary_98.jpg.html)

Small drawer being used for shorter sticks

http://i734.photobucket.com/albums/ww347/Gsxblaze/temporary_103.jpg (http://s734.photobucket.com/user/Gsxblaze/media/temporary_103.jpg.html)

First drawer has cheaper fiver's I've bought, might switch them with the x shelf but haven't decided yet.

http://i734.photobucket.com/albums/ww347/Gsxblaze/temporary_100.jpg (http://s734.photobucket.com/user/Gsxblaze/media/temporary_100.jpg.html)

Second drawer has some of the "better" stick I've bought.

http://i734.photobucket.com/albums/ww347/Gsxblaze/temporary_101.jpg (http://s734.photobucket.com/user/Gsxblaze/media/temporary_101.jpg.html)

And as the bottom has been the most consistent with rh and temp this is where I'm keeping the sticks I've been gifted.

http://i734.photobucket.com/albums/ww347/Gsxblaze/temporary_102.jpg (http://s734.photobucket.com/user/Gsxblaze/media/temporary_102.jpg.html)

I'm sure I'll rearrange it a million times before I decide how I want it but this has given me an idea of what this baby will hold. My meager stash doesn't even begin to make a dent in the storage capacity of this thing.

Most likely there will be several Bums that will follow your blueprint when building their Wineadors.

After about 24 hrs of me leaving it alone there's now just a 1% difference between top and bottom. Dead on 65 at the bottom and 66 at top. Can't complain about that. Hopefully I can decide on what knobs to go with and put the finishing touch on it soon.
