Those look fab, Bruck. Do you roll with whole leaf you buy, or do you grow your own? One of my goals in life is to roll some of my own cigars with self grown tobacco. I've grown tobacco a few times before, but only a couple of virginia varieties for the pipe. If I could roll as good as those you've shown, I would be really happy with myself!

Tnx vm! I buy whole leaves from various suppliers, happy to point you in their direction if you're interested. No, I don't grow my own, maybe if I move to a place with actual dirt someday.... :) A friend of mine who's a big time backyard gardener offered to grow some, but upon looking into it, it just wasn't worth it with the small quantities we'd be able to make, particularly when I can get decent already-cured and fermented leaves for $12-25/# (a pound gets you abt 30 cigars on the average).

As far as rolling well, I'm a piker compared to some on this and some other forums I've been on. What you're looking at is my #291-307. My first 20 or so were absolutely awful looking, but like anything you get better with experience.

I love it. It's like 20 bucks for a ton of yummy chocolate wrapper. How can you go wrong? As for CT Broadleaf, I've only used the "MED", not the maduro. I like it but I don't have a solid feeling yet on what it brings to the mix other than general strength and some pepper. I need more aging on my CT Broadleaf sticks, more experience. But I've been rolling with the PA for 6+ months and consider an essential part of my kit. Plus, at LO they seem to imply that the DARK CT Broad is thicker than the PO oscuro, which is already thick. IMHO the thinner the better when it comes to wrapper.

Anyway it's one wrapper that I unequivocally consider essential.

cbr310, on the one hand you could pitch her the fact that home-rolled sticks cost $1.50 each instead of $6-$13, so it's a huge savings, long-term.

OTOH you totally need patience so it might not be your cup of tea.

There are tons of resources like youtube and fairtradetobacco.com. I also have made a few videos demonstrating some of the basic processes:

What waikikigun said plus a couple of the online whole leaf distributors sell blending assortments and molds for pretty reasonable prices.

I keep track of my cigar rolling in excruciating detail - I've rolled 307 cigars, with a variable cost of $1.38 per stick, and a total cost of $2.12 per. The downside is, I have given more than half of them away :)

The PA Oscuro is PA broadleaf so the differences compared to CT broadleaf are very slight. If I had to nitpick I'd say the CT is bit more oaky and mossy and has thicker veins. If you enjoy broadleaf I'm sure you'll like it and I wouldn't be surprised if you couldn't tell the difference.
FWIW My experience has been with using WLT PA Oscuro and LO DW1 CT broad

Rolled another batch of Brohibas this weekend. Behold Batch 27:

http://i.imgur.com/HkD1pzL.jpg

Sizes range from 3.5" to 7". RG =~48 for most of them; some are 52.

Wrappers are all Cameroon. It's a great wrapper to work with, but a little delicate, and the leaves are a bit small, so it's hard to wrap the bigger sticks with one piece.

Binders are all "one sucker" (dark air) from a grower in KY. One sucker has good flavor and is very strong, but not real smooth, so it wouldn't make a good wrapper, at least not aesthetically.

Fillers are a lot of experiments. I got some samples of various things from the KY grower incl. "Havana," "Silver River," and "Dark Air," which I blended in various quantites along with my usual blends. Silver River makes a good pipe tobacco, so its use in cigars is, well, experimental.

Rolled a few more over the weekend - Brohiba batch 28

http://i.imgur.com/diRHg7Q.jpg

These are mainly my "conventional" blends, but incorporating some Kentucky Dark Air in place of Nicaraguan ligero.

Wrappers are Cameroon (the smooth ones), and the others are mainly wrapped in some "Aged Connecticut Broadleaf" from a grower in KY. They're pretty rough, as CT is hard to work with generally, and the aged CT was particularly wrinkly, even when highly moisturized. Binders are One Sucker and Dark Air, both from KY. Fillers are a combination of Piloto Cubano seco (Dominican), Nicaraguan seco, and Brazilian viso, and most of them have a leaf or so of KY Dark Air.

Marc L
12-22-2015, 07:07 PM
Rough for sure. It looks like those didn't take well to a good pressing. or the bunch was to wet when wrapped? I forget if you use a mold or not.
That sounds like a nice smokey blend.

Bruck

I use molds after binding but not after wrapping. The cameroons came out nice and smooth as usual, but the "aged CT broadleaf" was pretty rough, defying my entire bag of tricks for smooth wrapping. No matter, they have a nice aroma and I'm not planning on entering them in a beauty contest :)

Hey Bruce!

What does the dark air do for the cigar vs the Nic ligero flavor wise? Dark air isn't fire cured is it? Smokey flavor? You getting this from big bonner?

Merry Christmas!

& a fine Merry Xmas to you and yours!

The KY Dark Air is just normally cured and fermented, but not fermented as much as the south of the border leaves. It has less spice and less cigar-like flavor than the nic ligero, but OTOH it seems to have a "deeper" smoky flavor. PM me your add (I promise I'll record it this time) and I'll send you a couple of the decent ones.

The KY Dark Air is also _way_ stronger in vitamin N, even than the ligero. Of course I have no idea what priming the KY leaves are - I don't think the grower is that organized :). And as it's fresher, it's a little less predictable to bunch - I keep having difficulty with tight draws and plugged sticks. Live and learn.

Haven't been rolling much lately, but a former co-worker called me out of the blue & wanted to buy some for his promotion party (USAF officer). I said I don't sell them, but I'll send some for a congratulations gift. Unforch I have depleted my stash of Brohibas, so I rolled some new ones. They won't be fully matured by the time of his party, some time in July, but they'll be better than Tiparillos anyway :)

http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah83/bruck_finn/46ACF599-9356-47C3-97A8-6912C7BE2568_zpsufcsdons.jpg

Wrappers are mostly CT Broadleaf grown in KY, and there are a couple with PA, also grown in KY. Binders are Dark Air, also from KY. Fillers are Nicaraguan Viso, Criollo Ligero (also Nicaraguan), and Dominican Seco. CT Broadleaf is a very rough, veiny leaf, hence the rustic look. But its flavor makes up for aesthetics.

They're mostly robustos, a couple of toros, and one that might qualify as a churchill. There are a couple shorties in there - I had a churchill that had a very tight draw, so I cut it in two to mitigate it somewhat. Better a short cigar that smokes than a nice long one that doesn't!

I'll probably send half of these to my AF buddy, the good ones - I smoke the ugly or otherwise defective ones myself.

Yes, I'm familiar with the cultural reference, particularly the clever Seinfeld episode on the subject. To be honest, it probably wouldn't make a good cigar name though.

But... I think you do need a name for your sticks. & a band design. Fortunately for me Mrs. Bruck is a graphic designer, so I gave her a Cohiba label and asked her to make a printable design close to it, but using Brohiba.

Here's my second go at making two:

https://s17.postimg.org/5zekdebnz/IMG_3893.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/yp1ga1fnv/)

The feel of them seems to be a bit firmer and I did the pigtail thing much better though that also needs improvement. I didn't care much for trying to cut a larger cap. One of my binder leaves had a few tears in it. I figured that since it would go under the wrapper it might not be a big deal. I could hear it tearing while rolling. So the foot looked horrible. But then so did the next one. This time I cut the me to get rid of the craptastic looking foot. I didn't bother capping the second stick, though now I'm wondering if I should have left a bit of the pigtail.

On the DVD that came with the kit he uses a cover from a magazine to roll up the end product. That gave me an idea of using a magazine cover to roll the filler. Maybe I'd get a smoother more linear roll and be able to feel loose spots better.

I rolled two more today and these have turned out much better so far. I still need to add the wrapper tomorrow. However I was curious what was in my scraps bag. I was surprised and how big some of them were so I decided to go ahead and try rolling a cigarillo. As it doesn't have a mold I added the wrapper as soon as I was done with the binder and didn't bother with a cap.

https://s17.postimg.org/6xi2dn5zz/IMG_3895.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/ah403g8pn/)

I've named it Lumpy. I suppose on average it's probably about a 30 ring and is 3.5" long. Couldn't really begin to tell you what all is in it... The larger end is a little squishy.

rodwha

After coffee and a couple of chores I sat down and finished last night's endeavor. I didn't care for using the little piece of copper to make a cap so I took a quarter and used my knife as I couldn't find Karmen's exacto knife.

https://s17.postimg.org/3nuwyz4m7/IMG_3896.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/s4d2tg5cr/)

These have turned out much better but I still need a bit more work. The foot is always splayed and the other end (head?) a little loose.

I've been eyeing the 1/4 lb leaf options from LeafOnly. Sure would prefer a bit more character and I'm uncertain as to how these leaves will all work out (leftovers of this or that). I could always go for a Maduro wrapper! Yum!

I also tried something different with putting the filler together. In essence I used a leaf to roll the rest in along with a little bit of scrap to fill in places. This way I was better able to get a feel for it and to keep it together better while I preped the binder leaf. I'm pretty happy with the results for the most part. Getting the diameter right is hit or miss. I'm using 5 filler leaves, the max suggested for the mold. Some slightly overfill the mold and, as the one is, a little bit undersized.

I worked on these yesterday:

https://s17.postimg.org/uxj73h91b/IMG_3900.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/mf9qz52ij/)

I did much better at feeling the size but found the mold didn't do much of anything as they were rolled to size. Not perfect but pretty good for a hand roll I think.

And I decided to not place the two cut ends (middle of the leaf pile) together to form the head. It seems a bit better but still needs work. I initially set out to try what Marc recommended, which is to cut that end before rolling the wrapper. I still want to try that too.

And somehow Lumpy morphed into a better looking stick which I decided to try last night:

https://s17.postimg.org/aq5rb6j9r/IMG_3902.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/vaal9nz0r/)

More flavor than his bigger brothers. Burned nicely and even.

These are what was left of some tobaccos (http://fairtradetobacco.com/threads/new-well-aged-cigar-wrapper-opportunity.6718/page-2#post-123050) that didn't make it to being for sale that had a tight draw.

All but six of them I dis-assembled.

Than re-assembled them with different wrappers.

Rolled a couple batches over the long Columbus Day weekend.

https://i.imgur.com/fWdMWG3.jpg

33 total, 26 in Batch 36 and 7 in batch 37. Batch 36 has CT Broadleaf wrappers and "dark fire" (dark fire-cured VA) binders. Fillers are Nicaraguan Viso, Dominican Seco, and Criollo Ligero (pretty sure it's Dominican). Batch 37 has the same wrappers and binders, but the filler is random pieces from the scrap bag. They probably won't burn as well, so that's why I segregated them into a separate batch.

About half of them are tiny perfectos - my uncle passed away earlier this year and my aunt gave me his antique German perfecto mold, which his German relatives had given him many years ago. It was used by one of their old relatives who had worked in a German cigar factory way back when. My uncle wasn't a blood relative but the family connection is still pretty cool :) I won't be using it much though, since making a tiny perfecto is just as much work as making a full-size cigar, actually harder.

Absolutely. If they are the size wrappers the rest of us got you'll be able to get four rolled from one leaf. Super stretchy when you let the water fully absorb into it. Like CT shade leaf, it will stain if water is left to bead and stand on it so, shake of any excess and allow it to absorb in for at least a few hours if its not already stretchy to begin with.

Some more with mixed fillers.

Made a batch of 20 Brohibas over the weekend. In response to feedback from some of my non-paying customers, I thought I'd add a little more cowbell to my usual blend. These have Nicaraguan and Brazilian innards, Dark Fire Cured binders, and CT Broadleaf wrappers.
