View Full Version : Initial thoughts on SG Navy Flake (Not a real review)

I don't think this really counts as a legit review, as I have only had one bowl of this so far, but I wanted to share my initial thoughts.
I think it is official, I'm a Samuel Gawith whore. My favorite VA blend is FVF, my favorite Vaper is St. James Flake and now (even though I've only tried a few Navy Flakes) this one takes the spot for Navy flakes as well.
It's the only Navy Flake that I am aware of that has a touch of Latakia, but there may be more I'm not aware of. But when I say a touch, that's really all there is to me. The Virginias are the star and the Latakia is merely a team player. I think this is the first Lat blend I've had where it didn't dominate the blend.
It says it has a rum topping, but it must be a small amount because I'm not even sure I picked it up. What I did pick up was slightly sweet and was spicier than most VA blends, almost like it had a little Perique (which it does not). The Latakia stayed under the radar and complimented well without stealing the show.
I know it's only one bowl, but I enjoyed it very much and am looking forward to trying it in a few different pipes.
One more time, a big thank you to BryGuySC. Looks like I'm really going to like this one, just like I do all their blends. :pipe:

It seems your favourite Va, your favourite Vaper and your favourite Navy Flake are variations of the same tobacco. FVF is, well FVF. St James Flake is FVF with perique, and SG Navy Flake is 85% Virsinia from FVF and 15% latikia.

I see no problem with this statement!

That's why this statement was included.

Those guys know how to manufacture a flake.
And to top it off, I'm about to order some 1792 Flake as well. Cause that's how I roll. :pipe:

Don't think you're going to get a variation of FVF in that one. 1792 is an entirely different animal.

I've had a sample of it before, but it was when I was a newbie. I don't remember a lot about it.
I know it is a strong tobacco and has a unique flavoring added.
After a year, I think my palate is ready to really give it a chance now.

It's strong and can be rather harsh if you try to push it. I've found the best way for me is to use commonsenseman's fold n stuff method. I've not had any luck rubbing it out. Seems to crumble into toothpicks and dust and I don't like the taste as much either.
