View Full Version : Cigar Bum Pipe Tobacco Give-a-Way- Week 3

Tobias Lutz
06-30-2015, 09:12 PM
As previously mentioned, I’ve been entrusted with a bountiful collection of tins, ranging from a few to 7 years old. My task is to give them away This is the final of three week long contests. Read the rules, have fun, and if you see Al (aka Bull) around the forum, make sure to say “Thank you” for his generous donation to the pipe side of Cigar Bum!

1. Contest begins now and end Wednesday, July 8th @ 2359 EST.
2. You may enter once per day, with midnight being the reset time. This means you can, in theory, enter the contest 8 times.
3. The winner will be selected from all qualifying posts, using a random number generator.
4. To qualify, your post must be made during the appropriate time frame, and include the requested content for the specific contest. All other posts will be disregarded.

This week’s qualifying content is:
My four year old gave me the idea for this week’s contest. We were sitting in my study and he asked “Daddy, how many books do you have? You have a lot!”
So your entry post this week will include TWO things:

1) A guess at the number of books in my personal library.
2) A picture of a book that you would recommend someone else read.

EXAMPLE:

1) 1,482,291
2) http://thedreamalchemist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Einsteins-Dreams1-194x300.jpg

The winner will be selected at random, BUT if anyone gets within 25 books of the actual number…there will be a special prize awarded to that person.

More special than a bunch of tins of fine aged tobacco?

Your daughter sounds like a budding genius. But choosing only 8 books is going to be a challenge....

First guess 681 books, first recommendation:

Koontz is far and away my favorite author and this particular novel is one of my favorites of his.
His ability to make characters come alive is nothing short of amazing.

and some Vogon Poetry:

Ah freddled gruntbuggly,
Thy micturations are to me,
As plurdled gabbleblotchits,
On a lurgid bee,
That mordiously hath blurted out,
Its earted jurtles,
Into a rancid festering confectious organ squealer.
Now the jurpling slayjid agrocrustles,
Are slurping hagrilly up the axlegrurts,
And living glupules frart and slipulate,
Like jowling meated liverslime,
Groop, I implore thee, my foonting turling dromes,
And hooptiously drangle me,
With crinkly bindlewurdles,
Or else I shall rend thee in the gobberwarts with my blurglecruncheon,
See if I don't.

Here is a book that everyone would do well to read. It is basically about how to be aware of your surroundings and minimize your risk of being a victim of a voilent crime.
My concealed handgun license instructor recommended it to the class and I'm glad I picked it up.

The only e-books I own are a few that school have required me to buy. I read them on my laptop with an app. Kindles are anathema to me :)

Not sure about just reading this, but if you have the time and the inclination, I thought the class on it was pretty amazing.

Thanks to Tobias and bull for the contest!

If you all couldn't tell by my posts, I have a young child and not much time for reading books of my own choice (or maybe I enjoy and prefer Dr Suess, you be the judge)!

Charles Marlow's first appearance was in my favorite Conrad story: Youth. The description of pumping water into the ship to put out the coal/cargo fire, which of course makes the ship founder, is one of the most harrowing descriptions of peril I have ever read. Good choice, C-man.

I bet you're curled up with a bowl of baccy and a blanket reading Green Eggs and Ham right now. :pipe: :)

It was your Melville post that made me think of Conrad. I was about to post Ray Bradbury! I haven't read Youth, but now I will soon.

I'll be 35 this month so I'll be old enough to run.

However I would piss both parties off so badly I probably wouldn't get a single vote. Well, maybe my mom and a few of you bums. :pipe:

Well...we have winners GALORE!

The random draw for the seven tins is fastnbulbous !!!!

We also had FOUR guys guess within 25 books of my actual count 1246. Keep in mind that I bought another ~50 books since the contest started, but to be fair, I stuck with the number counted on day one :)

These winners are:

NarJar (1234)
c.ortiz108 (1242)
mooster (1238)
Cool Breeze (1225)

I need everyone to PM me your addresses, and I'll have all the prizes airborne by Monday!

Thanks for playing; this was my favorite of the three and you recommended some great stuff (and reminded me of some great books I hadn't thought of in a long time) :pipe:

Awesome man!! Good Old Random Number Generator!
I did not contribute much to the first 2 contests, but this one was up my alley.
I really really enjoyed it. And with a bonus.

WooHoo!!

Yaaaaayyy! Thanks for the fun contest! Really enjoyed it, aside from winning a prize. Some great reminders of stuff I've wanted to read but haven't. Funny thing is, the way I came up with that particular number was to roughly count my own books. Here's one wall

So little time, so many books (and pipes and cigars and single malt Scotches....).

Got my package from Tobias today for guessing within 25 of the correct number.

One tin of Dunhill Early Morning Pipe (love it) and a coupon for a $1 pouch redeemable at your local tobacco store. I will definitely use this as well, as I like a bowl of Captain Black every now and then.

Thanks a lot Tobias Lutz.

I also received a package from Tobias. A tin of Vauen black pepper. Honestly, I've never even heard of it! Thanks Tobias!

Got my runner-up prize today, too - never had it before but the reviews look great, and I never met a Dunhill I didn't like. Thanks again, Tobias Lutz

Thanks for the coupon too. I'm going to search high and low for a pouch of Velvet!

Dunhill Navy Rolls? Isn't that like giving someone two million dollars as a consolation prize when they didn't win one million dollars?

Just checked out the reviews - that stuff sounds really interesting. It really is flavored with black pepper.

I also received on the 15th. No pics for now but it did happen.
Things have been a tad crazy.
Will rectify soon.

It was a nice big box filled with lots of goodies.
I was a happy happy man.

Thanks again.
