View Full Version : Ash's and butt's everywhere.

So I was thinking the other night, as I was trying yet again to decide where to get rid of my ashes and butts from my recent smoke, that I wonder what everyone does with their ashes and butts. I've always struggled with this as I am against leaving them sit in the ashtray for even one night. When the smoking is done they have to go. The problem is it seemed like I was using up a lot of plastic bags and still stinking up the trash can (worse than usual) so lately I've taken to dumping them out on the side of house in a gravel area that is never used. Works ok but the breakdown time of the butts is very long so I am starting to get quite a collection growing on the ground. So far the wife hasn't seen but I know those days are numbered. So I would love to hear what everyone is doing with theirs.

I empty my ashtray when it has 3 butts and their associated ashes into a sealable plastic container (after they've cooled). When the container is full I empty it into a plastic grocery bag, tie a knot in it and dump it in the trash. It takes about 3-4 weeks to fill up the container.

I use an empty Gatorade bottle and fill about halfway with water to dump butts. Will hold a couple week's worth before I toss and replace. Dump in butt and screw top on. For ash I use an empty chewing tobacco tin and dump in until full. Everything stays sealed and outta sight and no smell in garbage. I'd say they are wife approved as I haven't gotten yelled at yet - in fact she probably doesn't know where they vanish to.

I used to dump the tray and toss the nub into the lake. Plenty of water in Florida, and I don't think it harms much but it's against the state statutes. I have heard some use the remaining tobacco for fertilizer.

I smoke in my spare garage, and the trash cans are right through the wall. So I just open the door to the side yard and dump the contents of the ashtray into the trash can. I doubt much smell leaks out from around the lid, and most of the time the overwhelming smell would be the actual garbage in it.
I do make sure the butt is cool before I do this, though.

I usually smoke in the garage and just leave them in the ash tray until I feel like emptying it. Then I just dump it in the outside trash can that gets put on the road every week. If I'm out back I usually set it on the porch railing until it's cooled then put it in the trash.

Ashes go on the ground. Step on them and they vanish.
Buts usually go in the wood burner. I've also given them a proper burial by kicking a small divot in the ground with my heel, dropping one in and covering it with dirt. Usually it's pretty easy to find a small area devoid of grass for the purpose.

I let mine sit in the ash tray until cool (or perhaps a bit longer) and dump them in the green waste bin. I can only assume that the local waste management company is composting them somewhere.

I have an old galvanized mop bucket as an ash bucket for my smoker and grill and the boys usually dump the ashtray in it and when its full (mop bucket) it gets dumped..i have never noticed any odors.

I just dump the ash and any buts in the outdoor trash bin. It usually has a mix of garbage, charcoal and ash from the grill, and some dog rockets from the daily walking of our dogs. Cigar smell is never an issue.

At home I usually smoke on the back deck. Ashtray gets dumped over the railing into the lawn where the butts get mulched up next time I mow. Either that, or I will toss them into my compost bin where they decompose and become rich organic matter for the flower beds.

Too true, but also remember that - "The crux of the biscuit is the apostrophe" (some here may recognize that)
Back to the topic at hand...My ashes usually just go on the ground to be blown around by the wind and my butts go either in the coals in my grill, or in the campfire, depending on where I'm smoking.

I built a little firepit in our backyard, so I toss the butts in there. Random tree branches also get pitched in there. At some point, they are consumed by flame or broken down by the elements - out of sight, out of mind. Makes for good coals for a wienie roast, too!

The apostrophes for plurals is a pet peeve of mine. Not sure why it annoys me, but it does. A lot of people do it, but I've never figured out why.

Butts and ashes go in the ashtray on the porch. If they get annoying, they then go in a covered trash can on the porch.
Last Summer my little brother and I were having cigars on the porch while he was going over my black powder weapons. I have a little 20 ga side-by-side black powder shotgun he liked a lot. When we finished our smokes I loaded it with powder and wads, but no shot. I dropped a butt down each barrel, drew back the rabbit ear hammers, and let both barrels go at once. It blew the butts to smithereens!
My wife came out and started lecturing us about playing with firearms while drinking, and said no more shotguns today. I said something about there being more butts in the ashtray still, but she shot me down by saying if she heard one more shot she would call my little brothers wife (who we are all terrified of). I cleaned, and put away the shotgun right away.
So I was thinking the other night, as I was trying yet again to decide where to get rid of my ash's and butt's from my recent smoke, that I wonder what everyone does with their ash's and butt's. I usually smoke on my back deck near a fireplace. I chuck them in the fireplace and they all get consumed in the next fire. During the summer (when it's so damn hot I don't have fires) I just dump the ashtray into the ash can I have for cleaning out the fireplace. That eventually gets dumped in a trash bag and simply thrown away.

Pretty bad for a guy who once studied to be an English major. Maybe that's why I never finished.

I thought English was horrible to learn, until I tried Russian.
Actually, my question isn't what you do with your nubs and ash, but how you keep the ash out of your lap?
I like to build ash, but can never predict when it will fall so awkwardly hold my cigar over an ashtray once it reaches an inch.
It seems 1 in 3 cigars will drop ash in my lap. Drives me mad.
Also, Frank Zappa is one wacky band. Don't hear of too many fans so I'm excited to see that name here.

I smoke at a desk usually, and rest the cigar in one of the slots of my ashtray between puffs.
What I do is set it down a touch less than gently, and you can see if the ash wiggles or not (or sometimes just falls off).
I rarely ash on myself since I started doing it this way.

I seem to have the same problem with my ash at times. No matter how diligent I am at trying to catch it I get ashed often.
