Just curious - how many pipe smokers out there still smoke cigars, and how many stopped cigars all together in favor of pipes? If you gave up cigars after discovering pipes, why?

I started on cigars and transitioned to pipes. I smoke my pipes way more than cigars, but I'm still a cigar smoker. While I would never call cigars one dimensional, there is a definite flavor profile almost all cigar tobacco has. Cigars taste like cigars. Pipe tobacco offers a very wide range of flavors. Some there is no comparison to be had between them. That and the pipes themselves just struck a cord with me.

I generally smoke something nice in a CC when I've abstained a few days like I just did. Also have a cigar and coffee to start the weekend. Lately I catch myself thinking about when the first pipe is going to hit. I'd say I'm transitioning. This is a fascinating hobby.

I started with cigars and picked up a pipe after a year or two.

I still smoke cigars, but smoke pipes more, probably at least 5/1.

It's a time thing mostly. I rarely have an hour and a half to dedicate to a smoke.

I do enjoy cigars very much still, just once a week or so. I usually find time for a bowl every evening.

Like many, I started with cigars and tried the pipe due to time. Found that I really like the nuances present in the pipe, and now I have a medium size tupperdore full of cigars and a house full of pipey goodness. Still enjoy a cigar, but the pipe is my number one.

I smoke pipes and cigars. they are definitely very different.
I tend to prefer pipes, but I still get a jonesing for a good cigar some days.
There is something about a good pipe tobacco that I just don't get from a cigar.

I was a pipe smoker first, so I guess it's no surprise that a cigar is just an occasional thing for me. Cigars are a treat; pipes are part of my life.

Interesting replies.... I'm so new to pipes I can't really answer my own question yet, but I do find myself a lot more interested in them lately. I also find myself seeking out pipe tobacco-like cigars. But I can't imagine pipes taking over completely, and I doubt any baccy could satisfy my urge for a really cedary creamy cigar, like an Ashton or Davidoff or Fuente. I guess I'm just gradually narrowing down my preferences. The weird thing is that with cigars my tastes run more medium-mild, but with pipes I prefer stronger flavors like blends with latakia.

Hey, I'm a pipe smoker. But when the craving hits for an 8-5-8 Maduro, I'm not wasting any time digging in the tobacco cabinet! :D

Pipes and cigars are different beasts.
I don't try to satisfy an urge for one by using the other. They each have their own, unique place.
Enjoy them both!

Smoke both, like both. Depends on the mood and setting for me, really.

Started with cigars, transitioned to pipes. I mostly smoke my pipe, and cigars are more of a weekend/vacation indulgence. Cigars are also a more social hobby, unless you are fortunate enough to know a few other pipes in your area, I suppose. If I am going to hang out with some friends, I bring the travel humidor and leave the pipe at home.

Started with pipes, added cigars, and still smoke both. In my mind they are two completely separate hobbies that I enjoy in their own time.

^ This. Except for any fascination with pipes. The pipe is a utilitarian thing with me. I'm fine with a grubby old cob 90% of the time.

^ This too. ...but I probably only smoke a cigar once every month or every couple of months. Less yet in the winter. I don't smoke my pipe every day either.

I smoke cigars still to this day and I maintain a ratio of about 2 cigars to 1 bowl. I enjoy smoking cigars in the lounge and occasionally a bowl, but I smoke my pipe exclusively at home. I like the ability to control how much I will be smoking and it is more peaceful by myself with a pipe.

I smoke both. I've found since I started smoking a pipe I'll go through ebb and flows where it's pipes for a week, then back to cigars, then back to pipes. I'm liking that rotation so far. I suspect I'll lean heavily on the shorter smoke times of a pipe in the winter.

That may be why I'm more into pipes; I only smoke at home.

I started smoking cheap cigars while floating down the Chattahoochee River, then started smoking cheap pipes not much later in High School. I still smoke both; in fact I am now finishing off a cigar in a briar.

That is one thing I haven't ever done. I've never finished off a nub in a pipe.
I wish I had thought of that the other day. I was burning my fingers on a Nub Macchiato it was so good. I should have put it in a pipe and kept smoking.

It really changes the perspective of the cigar when you put it in a pipe and it obviously makes it last a little longer. The trick is a good fit; I have one pipe for Robustos and another pipe for Coronas.

Funny, after starting this thread I smoked a pipe today and could only wish I'd had a cigar instead. But it was Mixture No. 79..... http://www.cigarbum.com/forum/pipe-related-reviews/mixture-79-review-contest-review-thread-3653.html#post70010

After a very long hiatus from conventional cigarettes, I started doing RYO cigs (several years ago), but then (re)discovered cigars (had dabbled in a few in the 90s) and lost all interest in cigs. Got a "customer appreciation pack" of samples of Lane Limited tobaccos from P&C after purchasing some cigars from them (might have been before the CI merger) and took to them right away. Went much deeper and developed my palate for pipe blends pretty quickly, so in short time pipe tobacco began to eclipse the cigar. Still, I do smoke a lot of cigars, though I have lately favored smaller vitolas. Presently I smoke a pipe several times a day. Mini cigars and cigarillos a couple times a day. Bigger cigars 2-3 times a week. Nasal snuff and snus all day when I'm not smoking.

Started with cigars, led to pipes. Smoke each about 50/50.

In the Summer months I will smoke about one cigar a week.

I smoke a pipe almost every day, and average about two bowls a day.

Nasal snuff is my crutch at work. Quite a few folks that fully deserved to be choked are still breathing thanks to the several snuff boxes I keep in my pocket at work.

I started with cigars as a lad in the fifties, but in University, I discovered women liked pipe smoke a lot more. I still prefer cigars, but as a pensioner can only afford them as a rare treat. When I started smoking, I could buy cigars three for a quarter and a good Cuban, which were legal then, for a dollar. My favourite cigar now is a La Gloria Cubana Series R. I can smoke a pipe for several days for the price of one cigar.

This is definitely a plus. As a family man and also a full time student on a budget, this is huge.
I can smoke mid range cigars, but my favorites are on the expensive side. In my current situation I don't get to smoke many Ligas, Padron 64s or Anejos. However my favorite pipe tobacco is very much within my reach on a daily basis. My favorite (at the moment anyway), Full Virginia Flake is only $11 a tin or $30 for 250g. I can smoke a lot of FVF for the price of a couple of my favorite cigars.

My father in law got me into cigars with the birth of my first daughter. Loved them for years, now 6 1/2. Was interested in getting into pipes for a couple of years, due to surfing the former puff website, where I learned all about cigars. My sister came out to visit in March and she wanted to buy a pipe. So I joined and bought a couple, along with some tobacco. Since then I have been favoring pipes but still having my weekly cigar. i am much happier after having smoked a pipe versus cigar, if that makes any sense. Love the taste, smell and the experience. One thing I have noticed is that if I have something to do in the garage or garden I will go for a cigar. If I have nothing at all to do, or just making to do lists or something, I will go for a pipe. Cigars are easier to manage right now, especially being a pipe newbie. I can see myself favoring pipes a lot, but for the moment do not see cigars going away.

Predominantly a pipe smoker but during the warmer months I do enjoy sitting outside and puffing on a nice cigar.
