So stepdad received a box of cigars from his buddy overseas - $1,500 a box - damn!
Anyways, he has ADD and I wouldn't call him an aficionado, but smokes b/c of the nostalgia. That being said, the talks about cigars being too big and will cut them in half to smoke them longer. That 1 - 2 hour smoke that I love, he shortens down to about 20 mins of solid puffing.
Is this normal? To cut cigars in half? I feel like you'd be missing out on 2/3 of flavors.
Thoughts?

Sounds like his buddy needs to get him some shorter, and cheaper cigars. I can't imagine how bad those things unravel once cut like that.

ummmmmm i would not call cutting them in half normal. in fact its going to be MORE of a waste cutting it in half unless you really nub it down. your gonna waste more cigar with two nubs. as for smoking a hlaf a cigar in 20 minutes i would say he 1. is smoking way too fast or 2. not smoking alot and leaving a big nub creating more waste than just smoking the whole cigar. sounds like he needs cigarillos and not cigars!

Yeah, that is not a normal. Sounds like a nice corona is more up his alley.

No way normal and not how the cigar was blended to be smoked.

I'd get him some short robustos to smoke when he wants something short, and tell him to save the expensive cigars for when he has more time. THose cigars were blended to be smoked as rolled, hes not getting the best flavor out of them.

I've cut $2 Churchills in half. I would never do it with anything else.

I have cut off some damage on some sticks before. However, I wouldn't do it it a stick that was in good shape though.

Sam, if they are too long for him, then there is an easy solution that doesn't make everyone on this site want to climb the walls.
Tell him to smoke for his 20 or 30 minutes, then let the cigar go out naturally in the ashtray.
THEN, use his clippers to cut the cigar, about one inch behind the burn line. Tell him to put the remaining cigar into a separate plastic baggie and back into his humidor.
Next time he smokes, he can pull out the baggie and smoke that one, and then just toss it when he's done.
What he's doing is the equivalent of cutting a can of beer in half, then plastic wrapping both open ends, and then telling shocked onlookers it's because he can't finish a whole can in one sitting.

Way, well a little time back, think...ElProducto,etc ten centers, three for a quarter. Some did this with longer cigars, cut, smoke one half, put the other half in shirt pocket to smoke later.Have seen mentions of "clear havana", tho can only cigars as being labeled Cuban tobacco.

that's worse an still not the best option. im defiantly not one for a relight. i usually wont even relite if im smoking and its been out for around 20 minutes but to each there own. this may be a better option for him but i personally would not do it

Well he already has been gifted the box of cigars, so there's no two ways around it. I have no idea why his friend got him expensive cigars in the first place.
Maybe he should buy bundles of Flor de Oliva. For $2 a stick it doesn't much matter how he wants to mangle them :)

NGGEEEAAAAHHHH! That's WAY worse! I was somewhat ambivalent about cutting the cigar in half, but the thought pf putting a half-smoked cigar back in a humidor (even in a baggie) makes me want to throw up.
That's like opening a beer can, drinking half, then putting the rest of the can in a bag and them coming back and drinking it several days later.
You'll never get the stale ash taste out of a half-smoked cigar, and besides tar, it's the foulest taste I can think of when it comes to cigar smoking. I'd rather smoke a Ron Mexico than a half-smoked Opus X later.

So maybe the best solution is to let him toss most of the cigar? Cutting it in half could lead to half of it unraveling.
I'd get him some short robustos to smoke when he wants something short,...so when are those shorts showin up?????

best option is to sell them to someone that will be able to enjoy the car the way it was meant to be and take the money and go buy some good cigarillos or corona sized sticks

Illusions Rothchildes are pretty short smokes.
I carefully put the cuttin board on the counter top...Selected my best meat cleaver, an checked it for sharpness... No dull blade for this..Usin scotch tape I firmly fastened that CHURCHILL to the cuttin board...Then I put a dotted line through the middle of that cigar..I picked up that meat cleaver, an with a smile swung quickly down choppin that CHURCHILL cleanly in HALF...A 2fer...just like steaks

I dunno...I still get well over an hour out of them...I'm thinking a cigarillo would best suit him for the 20 minute smoke he seems to want. Or maybe some Bandidos...

I know some folks who smoke them in half an hour, and not rushing it, mind you.
I've only had one, and it was an hour for me, but I tend to smoke on the slow end of the scale.

yeah most coronas are usually a 45= minute smoke for me and i wouldnt say i am a slow smoker either. i think cigarillos are the best more for the money, most coronas are 4+ dollars you can get a tin of good cigarillos for anywhere from 10-25 bucks so its much more bang for the buck

OK then. It's your cigar and you can do what you want with it! I'm not going to get my panties in a bunch for what someone else does with their cigars....
I would love to see the look on peoples face when they see him cut a ~$60 cigar in half. I have a feeling I would say something if I saw someone do that lol. I think his best bet is to...
1) send the cigars back to his friend saying thank you but they're just too big.
2) keep them and smoke them the way they were meant to be.
3) Sell them to someone who will smoke them the way they were meant and buy smaller sticks.

I brought a few bottles of nice red wine overseas once. My oldest brother-in-law proceeded to put ice in his wine glass. I was mortified. My wife told me to just keep it to myself.
I'm so glad I will be rid of that family soon.
Sam: My two cents are to sell them and use the money to buy some nice short smokes.
Why can't he spend an hour smoking them?

Why would this be a thing?
I wanna smoke an hour, petit corona
80-90 mins, corona
90-110 robusto
Ect......
Why cut a cigar in half? Makes no sense.

He bought them. I say they're his cigars and he can smoke them, smoke part/trim/bag and come back a week later, chew them, look at them, sniff them, sell them, hand them out to friends or whatever pleases him.
Except cutting them in half which is still a crime in many civilized countries.
OK then. It's your cigar and you can do what you want with it! I'm not going to get my panties in a bunch for what someone else does with their cigars....

I will not be impressed untill I see you butterfly one o' them Churchills. And then only if you can still smoke it! :D
I don't really understand all the hubbub over this. If he likes his cigars chopped in half, so be it. Amirite? Smoke what you like and like what you smoke... even cut in half. After all, when it comes down to it, they're just leaves.

Man oh man. I would never buy an expensive box of cigars like that, only to cut them up because I couldn't finish them. It definitely sounds like he needs a different vitola. As for saving a half smoked cigar in my humidor, there's no freaking way I would do that, ever.

I purposely left 'butterflied cigar' open to interpretation. In the event someone wants to try it, it would be hilarious to see what they come up with. :D Not sure but I think if you butterflied it lengthwise the only way to smoke it would be in a pipe but FEEL FREE TO PROVE ME WRONG! :stogie:

There's no such thing as cheating when it comes to mangling a dog rocket :D :D
However, in the spirit of a butterfly steak, both halves must stay together.
