Ok folks. I dropped the ball. Big time. My sincere apologies. Things got a little crazy here and I let the TOTM (among other things) slip. Please forgive me and please bear with me. If you want/need to know what the deal is just PM me. Not going to put it out on open forums. But I'm back on a somewhat even keel right now and hopefully smoother sailing for a while!

Anyway, so June is the first month of summer. What do y'all like to smoke in the summertime?

I want to nominate Samuel Gawith Navy Flake.

In the South, summer brings late-afternoon thunderstorms. Deep rumbling thunder, a cool breeze, a slight hint of a dusty before-the-rain smell, and the darkening of the sky; all perfectly complement the dusky sweetness of SG Navy Flake. It is a match made in sweet-tea-sipping-heaven.

I have to nominate Red Rapparee. I've been smoking from the 3 year old tin that Mark gave me and it's been very satisfying as I only have been getting a single pipe in each day (if that...) for the last month or so. A busy and spontaneous blend that goes nice with a peg of whiskey at the end of the day.

C&D Old Joe Krantz a very nice Burley blend I would have never tried if not for the generosity of Pugsley. A strong blend but worth a try if you haven't and don't mind a bit of Vitamin-N.


Cornell & Diehl - Old Joe Krantz

Ribbon and coarse cut burleys, perique and red virginia. Shades of brown with the characteristic mustiness of perique.

Notes: Notes from Bob: The blend was named in honor of my grandfather, who was also my pipesmoking mentor and role model. He primarily smoked burleys, like Union Jack and Edgeworth Sliced. I cannot think of a time when I didn't see him w/o one of his beat-up pipes and the aroma of pipesmoke around him. In any case, I was reading the reviews of Haunted Bookshop and Norm Musicant indicated that he liked more red virginia in his blends. Norm is someone whose opinion I respect. I was still looking for a simple hearty burley blend that could hold my interest all day. So, a new blend.

I'd like to nominate a budget conscious blend that is my number 1 in everything.
Peter Stokkebye Luxury Bullseye Flake.
1.5lb box is only $45.90 or $1.88 an oz at 16 oz bulk
A blend of ripe Virginia tobaccos spiced with pure Louisiana Perique. The center of Black Cavendish smooths out the taste. The outer blend is pressed into thin layers before being tightly spun around a stick of pressed Black Cavendish. The result is a massive ‘cigar’ which is cut into ‘medallions’ and packed. Lightly aromatic, medium strength. Most enjoyable on its own. Select 2 to 3 slices – rub gently by hand and fill the pipe lightly

Images which are conjured up whilst smoking Samuel Gawith's Navy Flake. A traditional offering of Virginias, pressed with just the right amount of Latakia and flavoured with Rum. Medium strength.

Two Friends English Chocolate (http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/4228/two-friends-english-chocolate) - We begin with the finest Virginias and just enough Latakia to provide the taste that so many crave then press it to marry the flavors. We then tumble it out to a broken flake for easy packing and add just a touch of chocolate to awaken the senses. The end result is a blend that satisfies all day for a walk through the Dales yet is welcome in the drawing room in the evenings thanks to warm chocolate aroma.

Prepared from choice Red Virginias and heavily flavored with Orientals, giving it a red tinge. It burns in the pipe with the spontaneity of a fine cigar. A charming, perfectly balanced dark mixture of Virginia tobaccos, Orientals, Black Cavendish and a luxurious quantity of Latakia. The ash is pale grey and similar to that of a good cigar. A wonderful, spicy mixture.
