View Full Version : Mixture No. 79 Review Contest

I've noticed quite a few new pipers lately. I've also noticed recent murmurings and musings about this notorious tobacco. I have to say, I have never tried it either, so I have been looking for an excuse to give it a go. Why not do a contest?
Some of you may remember my Ennerdale review contest from the old site. This one will work basically the same way. Sign up in this thread and PM your address. I will mail out samples to all participants. Participants will post a review in the review thread I create. Reviews will be judged on whatever criteria I feel like at the moment. Judging will be extremely subjective, but gifs, pictures, and the ability to make me laugh always score well :D. Winners will be handsomely rewarded for their bravery and poor judgment.
There are no restrictions to registration. FOG's and new Bums are all welcome here. If you are brand new to piping, let me know and I might even throw in a MM smoke-able second to get you started. There is no limit on the number of participants. I'll leave registration open until Friday of next week, 5/29. Once registration is closed, I will order the baccy and send out the samples. As much as I would love to expedite the process and order ahead of time, I don't want to get stuck with a tub of this stuff if only a few people sign up. Reviews should be posted in a relatively timely manner. I'm not going to put a firm date on it yet, but if someone disappears for a long time, I reserve the right to move ahead with the judging.

Awesome! If you only get a handful, Tim, you can buy it by the ounce from 4Noggins and not get stuck with a bunch left over. (http://www.4noggins.com/mixture-no-79-pipe-tobacco.aspx)

Winner receives a 10 year supply of Mixture 79!
(That would be 1 pouch - to be stored in the glovebox of their car until discarded 10 years later)

Thanks for that, Tobias. Just to clear up any possible confusion, I didn't mean to imply that I would cancel the contest if there wasn't enough participation. I'm just trying to keep leftovers to a minimum

OK, I can see that... sorta.
I despise Lakelands (Ok, ok, dislike), but I like M79 a wee bit (in a perverse way). I always feel sleazy (in a good way) when I smoke M79. It makes me feel like madness and desperation is in the air, but I am above it. It's kinda fun occasionally.
I'd like to get in on this, but I'm gonna be on the road for almost two weeks. I'm not sure how the logistics would work... maybe I could pick up a pouch on the road and do a review with yall?

tmoran, you mentioned a "MM smokeable second." What is that, sir?
tmoran
05-22-2015, 01:07 PM
Missouri Meerschaum sells grab bags of their "Smoke-able Seconds (http://corncobpipe.com/10-pipe-grab-bag-of-smokable-seconds.html)". They are MM corn cob pipes that have some minor flaw that do not alter the pipes smoking qualities, but do not pass inspection. Some of them have small cosmetic flaws, and most that I have I can't even find the flaw that caused it to fail inspection.

Time is running out! Registration closes tomorrow at midnight. Sign up now or you will forever regret the opportunity to sample the very same tobacco Hugh Hefner used to attract all those bunnies (I hear he did pretty well with the ladies, too) for the low low price of one review. In addition to a free sample, the top three reviews (as chosen by yours truly), will be rewarded with a prize pack custom tailored to the individual. I may even throw in some bonus flash contests along the way.

*****MINI CONTEST #1*****
You work in the marketing department at Sutliff. Sales of Mixture No. 79 have been lagging. Your boss thinks the solution is a complete rebrand. Your job is to come up with some type of marketing material. A new print ad, a new logo, etc. He really wants you to capture the "essence" of the blend, and the type of people you imagine smoke it. For simplicity sake, we'll pretend there are none of the usual laws surrounding tobacco advertising. Also, your boss is a cheap SOB, so your only tools are MS Paint (if there is a similar Mac equivalent that is fine), Photoshop, stock images from the web, and anything you can draw manually.
You have one week. The deadline is start of business Monday, 6/22. Off the record, your boss is a bit of a goof, and you know anything that will elicit a laugh is sure to get his praise. This contest is open to all members, even if you are not part of the review contest. The winner will have his or her choice of a full tin of one of the following:
Erinmore Flake 7/13
Peterson Irish Flake 4/14
Orlik Golden Sliced 100g 7/13
SG 1792 Flake 5/13
Dan Hamborger Veermaster 8/14
If I choose more than one winner, first place will get first choice, second will get second, and so on. I also reserve the right to throw in samples and bodyguards to protect the tin.
Good luck!

That was a bust. Maybe tomorrow night. In the mean time, here is the 60 radio ad we'll be starting July first.
Mixture No. 79 Radio Ad
Has the man of the house been coming home a little, let’s say, grumpy-umpy-umpy?
(background: door slam “frickin frackin smitten smatten”)
Buy him a gift that will pay dividends to you. A new pipe and a tub of Mixture No. 79 Pipe Tobacco. Not only is the act of smoking a pipe relaxing, (“ahh”) but it’s medically proven that nicotine counteracts some of the effects of caffeine. (sigh of relief) You know, that evening cup of coffee from the pot made this morning. Let’s face it. Eight O’Clock is a brand, not a vintage. (“yuck”)
But wait. There’s more!
The smell of Mixture No. 79 will bring back memories of his saintly mother, and the flowery “old woman” perfume she always wore. (“Mom” in a relaxing voice) While the taste of Mixture No. 79 will remind him of her threatening to wash out his mouth when he couldn’t control it. (“Don’t want any of that”) Mixture No. 79 will calm him down everytime he smokes it.
So if you want to turn that roaring lion into a neutered* old house cat, get him Mixture No. 79 today!
Announcer should read the following fast in a low voice;
*“Warning: While Mixture No. 79 has not been proven to make men impotent and/or sterile YET, if you come to bed smelling of this stuff, it won’t matter.”
I thought about recording it myself. I've been told I have a face for radio.

I was running a little behind getting the results of the first mini contest back. I was carefully pouring over all the entries, weighing all the elements, puffing away in silent contemplation. After much analysis, I have decided to choose two winning entries. Runner up goes to c.ortiz108. Now, ladies (if there are any lady pipers out there) and gentlemen. Without any further ado, I present your champion........... GWBowman!!!
GWB, choose your winnings from the list below. Chico, you get to choose from the leftovers. Thanks everybody for playing!!!!

Peterson Irish Flake 4/14
Orlik Golden Sliced 100g 7/13

An Ode to Mixture No. 79
While inside the Ziploc bag it lay
My nostrils were filled with much dismay
Was it licorice, vanilla, whisky? – nay!
Just lavender, soap, tar, and decay
But I soldiered on like a warrior brave
And stuffed my pipe with Burley aftershave
But soon I began to rant and rave
And almost longed to be dead in the grave
For when match touched leaf I did despair
And thought that I tasted baboon hair
Or perhaps the anus of a bear
Or Queen Elizabeth’s underwear
It’s nothing like a fine aged wine
Shared with a beloved valentine
‘Tis more like a sun that doesn’t shine
Or grapes that die upon the vine
Your taste is yours, and mine is mine
Some like tofu, some like swine
But I for one will never pine
For this sickly Mixture 79
PS: Tim, feel free to disqualify me if you want since I already won something - I just couldn't resist the challenge!

As Mr. Burns would say, Huzzah!! Thanks Tim/SO/All. I am very happily surprised.
I still have basically no idea about pipe tobacco, so after a quick lookup on the inter webs I will try the Solani Aged Burley Flake 3/14.
It got the highest rating on the first website that I went to (Tobaccoreviews.com), has no additives at all, or so it said, and it was not one of the many sent to me by Tobias for the newbie sampler.
Thanks again everyone.

I've seen that Solani recommended all over the place, so I'm guessing you probably made a good choice! The use of 3 different kinds of burley is intriguing.
I've been wanting to try Presbyterian Mixture, and in fact was going to order some on my P&C order but they don't carry it. I thought that it was very good. I think it was the first straight Burley that I have had.
It smoked super quick which was why it was all gone.
I finished 2 bowls in the time it usually takes to have one.
Looking forward to trying it again.
There was a weird soap/metallic taste every 5 puffs or so that I couldn't quite place. I was not a huge fan of that, but that could have been the pipe that I smoked out of too.

Haven't tried mine yet, but from what I've read it's a different strain of Burley than is commonly used and is supposed to have some pretty unique characteristics.

The bit I've tried has a remarkably cigar-esque flavour and mouthfeel to it. A slightly dry, earthiness you would almost get from a habano cigar.

I agree with this description. Earthy is the predominant flavor. It always reminds me of mushrooms a little. Also a little spice, more so if you don't smoke it very slow. Also, pack it fairly tight. It is very dry, so it will burn quickly.

I did not get too much of the cigar. Maybe a bit, but I think that was just because it was more straight tobacco than I am used to in pipes. Also, I am still learning. :)

After sailing the seven seas, and being delivered via kangaroo, the sample of M79 kindly sent to me by c.ortiz108 has arrived. Firstly, a shout out to Chico who not only has sacrificed his time to send this, but has also included a sample baggy of four(!) other tobaccos to try! An incredibly kind gesture, and I can't wait to try them all. Thank you Chico.
I've been away for a week for work and came home to find my package had arrived safely. My girlfriend had already unpackaged everything and tucked it safely away in my tobacco storage esky! I've got the night to myself while she is at work, so what better way to unwind after a long week than with tobacco.
With such glorious comments put forward about M79 I was half expecting to encounter things not unlike that of a bad acid trip, but I was pleasantly surprised. My interpretations are exactly that, but what ran through my mind was as follows:
Upon opening the bag and having a good ol' sniff, I was immediately transported to a lolly shop not far from here. A small shop that specialises in olde worlde and international candy and other treats. I get that sickly sweetness that one would get from the small sugar candies similar to a pez, mixed in with the treats of old which often used floral and nutty essences. The whole thing has a thin, dusty overtone of the scent that a shop can only get if it's been operating for decades. It's nothing I'd ever expect from a tobacco blend, but it does get nostalgic points.
First char gives a huge burst of the sickly notes mentioned before, and on subsequent lights (I am a bad offender for smoking a pipe in short bursts) the flavours mellow out and I think I understand the soapy description people get. There's a feeling at the back of the tongue that you would only normally get if you were to say, down some liquid soap. Having accidentally ingested liquid soap before I can certainly see the similarity. It feels almost like an oily coating which has those (chemically) floral notes to it.
The room note I'll be honest and say isn't overwhelming but rather pleasant for a tobacco, in an odd kind of way. I can't say I'd stock up on M79, but I'll smoke through my sample and consider it for what it is - a novelty tobacco of sorts. Were it not for the soapy mouth feel I'd say it's enjoyable.
Thanks for the opportunity guys.

Glad the package arrived okay. Let me know what you think of the others once you've smoked them. I like that Racine & Laramie a lot, even though I'm not crazy about burleys. They're an old timey shop in San Diego and they still do their own blending.
