CI sells 5 Avo Classic Robustos for $40 and CAO Gold Robustos for $20. How is it that their sampler of 5 ea is merely $35? That's less than 5 Avos alone! What am I missing here???

They make money either way. They get folks who weren't going to buy anything to jump on the deal because its SO cheap, and they get the guy just looking for an Avo fiver specifically to pay full price.

They certainly will get my business. There's just no point in buying a box of either. A box of CAO brings the price per cigar to $3.84 vs an average of $3.50 for the pairing. And it's $7.65/stick for a box of Avos...

If you like an Avo Classic you will likely enjoy the CAO Golds. Not exactly the same but similar enough.
Without actually seeing the cigars, I can't be sure. But I'm guessing the Avos are the old band. Most retailers are selling them at a discount to make way for the new Avo packaging. Similar to what happened with Camacho.

I'm no expert by any means and changes to the band were relatively minimal. That said, I think those may be the old band, though someone sharper than me may know for certain. At any rate, the blends weren't changed, so you're getting the same cigars regardless.
