Puffing Milonga (Dan Tobacco) in my Ardor Rhodesian. Dan offers several good aromatics, but this might be the best of them. Tasty flavoring and good tobacco. Unfortunately, my stock of it is getting low and, like many Dan tobaccos, it’s usually out of stock.

Have you tried Sweet Vanilla Honeydew? I'm partial to that one because it's all Virginia - no nasty burley and no boring, airy cavendish.

Trying a tiny musketball of ODF in the Dagner again because yesterday's bowl was ok but just wasn't all that great. This time rubbed it out to mostly ribbon cut. I find this is one of those rare flakes that I much prefer rubbed out.

Burned a bowl of Esoterica Stonehaven in the Dagner poker tonight. Whoever told me to dry this blend thoroughly (think it was Bruck or Branzig) was right. I dried it well before fold and stuff. Makes for a nice smoke. Peppery like a VaPer and with some nice dark fruit. Flavor holds right down to the bottom, unlike most aromatics. I guess this isn't really an aromatic per se although it is topped with something for sure. Anyway, glad I bought a couple bags back in 2015. It had none of that moldy newspaper taste I get with most burley blends.

Another, albeit smaller, bowl of 2015 Stonehaven. So good. Hard to believe this isn't an untopped VaPer. So spicy and good! Didn't let this batch dry as much as the last (a bit pressed for time tonight) and the flavors were subsequently a little muted but still very nice!

Smoked a bowl of War Horse Bar last night. Didn't really want a smoke but wanted to keep the mosquitoes away. I picked a non-favourite blend as there was a good chance I'd be abandoning it mid bowl.
War Horse Bar: Mini review...
I bought this because of the supposed nostalgia of an 'old blend brought back' etc etc and because of all the love on TR - hardly a bad review. It's touted as a 'strong blend with a singular top note'. Generally I like strong blends because generally strong blends don't bite... and I loathe tongue bite. Also, it's advertised as a plug. I like the plug cut and plug is rather rare. I'm a sucker for plug tobacco of any kind.
Actually, I got lots of tobacco cheap because I ordered Bar but P&C sent ready rubbed - 3 tins I think, which they replaced with Bar at no cost and let me keep the RR as well.
Well this stuff is nasty. It's like smoking a bowl of baby powder mixed with nicotine. At first light it's all baby powder all the time. By mid bowl some of the baby powder had burned off and I could taste the tobaccos... including papery (yes, papery. I didnt mean to type 'peppery') burley - which I do not particularly like. By the end, the baby powder was back with a vengeance. It's also not a plug. It's a crumble kake - my least favorite presentation: you slice off a few flakes and as you try to arrange them for stuffing they crumble into sawdust between your fingers. Crumble kakes suck. The reviewers at TR were trying to identify the 'singular' (read: evil) topping; anise, valerian root, vanilla etc... It's baby powder guys. Stop over thinking it. Baby powder: plain -n- simple. My Pipe still reeks of baby powder this morning. Hopefully it fades soon. Maybe I'll set it out in the sun for a while and see if that helps. Hope it's not ruined.
-edit-
Scrubbed the bowl and stem out good with dark rum, pipe cleaners and paper towel. Seems to have attenuated the baby powder quite a bit. There's hope yet! Have to pass a bowl of Happy Bogie thru it soon. No ghost Can stand up to Happy Bogie! :pipe:

Had a cobload of an old favorite while on the river yesterday: Samuel Gawith, Chocolate Flake. Haven't visited this one in quite a while but it's always very nice. Pipe was heavily ghosted with Ennerdale so the SGCF was rather perfumey, especially toward the bottom. Still not bad tho.

Lots of flavor, and an interesting tin note too. Maybe fermentation? The SmokingPipes blurb says it has “a whisper of Perique”, which is certainly fermented, but maybe the Virginias are fermented too. Very mild and burns readily right out of the tin. The flakes are fragile.

The SmokingPipes blurb says it has “a whisper of Perique”...
Speaking of SmokingPipes and perique, I just ordered a tin of Solani 633 Virginia Flake.
They just sent me an email saying that Kendal Plug was available so, being helpless against the temptation of a quality Virginia plug, I ordered a couple boxes to squirrel away like some kind of deranged, pipe smoking pack rat. Needed a little something to boost the order to free shipping so Solani 633 it was. Updates as far as actually smoking the stuff in the weeks to come. Smoked a few bowls in 1 day and got burned out on tobacco - everything tasting the same - been giving it a rest lately. Usual pace is maybe a bowl every few days or so but what is one to do during this campfire season that is suddenly upon us?

I really like the non geranium G&H blends for the most part. They're pretty much my go-to blends most of the time... if I could say I actually have a go-to blend. Probably the reason being that while I don't like the papery taste of most burleys, whatever burley G&H uses doesn't seem to have much if any of that loathsome, wet newspaper taste. I'm not a fan of their perfumed blends. In fact, rum flake has too much of it when it's fresh - it's all I can taste. However, I've found that if I jar up a pound in a quart Mason with the lid disk upside down 'the essense' will have mostly escaped - at least down to a tolerable level - after a year or two.
Maybe I should take a minute to set out another bowl of Louisiana flake for later today...

I like most of the GH blends, even the English ones. The rose geranium is something we agree on, but I love Tonquin bean flavor. I don't recall experiencing the wet newspaper taste in burley; will keep an eye out for it now as I am now a burley lover. I remember you mentioning it years ago here, but doesn't turning the Mason jar lid upside down result in dried out tobacco?

Well I wouldn't suggest you do this as it will probably ruin your appreciation for burley but...
Put about a 1 square inch piece of plain corrugated cardboard in your mouth and chew on it for a while. You will get familiar with the wet soggy cardboard taste. Now - or maybe the next day - go smoke a bowl of... oh... Solani Aged Burley Flake. Which actually has a lot of nice sweetness and nutty flavor to it, but to me it tastes like all that sweetness and flavor is carried on a soggy piece of cardboard.
I remember you mentioning it years ago here, but doesn't turning the Mason jar lid upside down result in dried out tobacco?
It can, you have to keep an eye on it. However, G&H blends tend to come pretty wet anyway and a quart jar of flake takes a long time to get too dry with the lid on, albeit upside down. Seems the perfume must be more volatile than the water, especially since most blends have at least a little PG added and that tends to hinder the drying-out process a bit. I really enjoy Rum Flake but fresh it was way too perfumey for me. I had it sitting with upside down lid for about a year and although it did dry out some it never got too dry. I can't even detect any Lakeland in it anymore. It's become (yet another) one of my favorites. :pipe:

I really enjoy Rum Flake but fresh it was way too perfumey for me. I had it sitting with upside down lid for about a year and although it did dry out some it never got too dry. I can't even detect any Lakeland in it anymore. It's become (yet another) one of my favorites. :pipe:
The Louisiana Perique Flake may have tonquin without the floral scent. I think St. Bruno and Condor have some tonquin in the topping. I just finished up a half-pint jar of some GH Kendal Dark and didn't detect much Lakeland scent or taste at all. And if I left it out longer than 30 minutes, it would get a little crispy, but it's almost a shag cut. Sounds like the lid trick provides a tool for slow-drying as well as off-gassing of unwanted scents.

Are you liking the Latakia blends so far? Those are usually a love it or hate it kind of thing.I couldn't tell you yet, since this was the second of the sampler I've tried, and the first traditional pipe tobacco (smoked the C&D Chopped Cigar, first).
I did enjoy both, and was surprised by the Nightcap in that it was a mellower than I imagined and had a nice complexity.
As I smoked, I noticed a bit of tar juice in the stem and filter, so I'm not sure if the filter and the tar was affecting the overall experience. Once I removed the stem, there was a nice tar turd hanging from the filter, so I stopped smoking. Got about halfway through the bowl.
Reading another thread, it sounds like most people go without a filter and recommend a Forever Stem. Would you recommend doing this?

I've never tried the forever stems myself but have heard great things about them.
I always toss out the filter. Don't care for them.
Also, nothing wrong with passing a pipe cleaner halfway through a bowl to swab out the moisture. I don't like any pipe that can't pass a pipe cleaner for this reason.
Smoked some MacBaren Bold Kentucky in a corn cob pipe. Holy Cow, that stuff is strong! Must have taken 30 minutes for my heart to settle back down.

Up early this morning at 4:00 am and smoking some Schwab's Paul's Stuff in a very nice estate Bacchus carved meerschaum that I got in the mail from Mars Cigar and Pipes yesterday. The only thing I dislike about this new meerschaum is that the stem is not of high quality and seems to be added only as an afterthought. Does anyone know of a good pipe repair person who works with meerschaum pipes? I have had some bad experiences with having meerschaums worked on with two other repairmen in the past. One of them actually shattered the shank of one of my pipes and glued it together and added a nickel band. At least they didn't charge me for it. It was an old Barling meerschaum billiard.

Contrary to some illusions , I am still around. Mostly round.... Oh well , Time goes on. Currently working on a smooth blend of numerous aromatics , Henceforth referred to as my Bastard Blend . Mostly vanilla and some coco but a few fruits thrown in to give it a twist. For this I have selected a no-name egg-billiard and coffee ( strong enough to make Samson gag ).

Went to the flea market but found no pipes, but found a leather binder full of over 80 DVDs with many great titles, for $10! Also got some Earl Grey tea bags and home-made peanut butter cookies (that me and the dogs have already eaten). Then went on a short one-hour hike with a friend of mine at a local arboretum; got in more than my 7500 steps for the day.
Mixed some Five Brothers with some shag-cut Turkish to tone down the N-hit and am smoking it in a MM Country Gentleman with a filter in it. I find that it smooths out the Five Brothers a bit. Five Brothers can be harsh, but I appreciate its unadulterated burley flavor.
