Woke up an hour later to an excited ruckus ouside. Coon in the chicken coop, looking for a chicken dinner... promptly shot it with a 12 gage (in my underwear) and went back to bed. Thus endeth the ruckus but now wide awake... tired this morning...

...and you're supposed to smoke a yellow virginia to combat a cold. Try a bowl of FVF next time.

Burned a bowl and a half of Bullseye flake on the river yesterday. Would have been 2 bowls but my Zippo ran out midway thru the second bowl :( Apparently I'd misplaced my can of Zippo fluid because it was nowhere to be found so I had filled it the first time by dunking the end of the insert in the boat gas tank (it's a 2 cycle btw... makes relights taste pretty funny). Should have filled it better the first time because by the time it ran out again I could no longer reach the fuel in the tank without fear of dropping the whole works into the gas tank :p. Very nice tobacco when cut into match stick sized pieces and smoked slowly.
This stuff is STRONG. I think it's stronger than the ropes and twists. Surprised you don't need a prescription to buy this.
Had plenty munchies and a glass of red wine on the side. This stuff is great but not for an empty stomach.
I don't think I've ever smoked a more full-flavored blend. Might go for another bowl tonight if I have the time. Even a small bowl lasts well over an hour.

I don't care much for aros but a good tobacco blend with a subtle case I really enjoy. The English do a lot of them like that. Maybe I should hunt up some RY. Been a while since I burned a Dunhill blend.

"Soo" is short for Sault Ste. Marie, in northeastern Michigan. It's sold by Austin's, which is a furniture/consignment/flea market/anything to make a buck in a small town store which has a humidor and reasonable selection of pipe tobaccos in back.

Soo Blend is your basic whiskey cavendish aro, nothing special. I just got it bcs of the name :)

I opened a 4 yo tin of F&T Vintage a couple of days ago — puffing that now in my Radice Rhodesian. For some reason this pipe leaves pipe cleaners significantly cleaner than any of my other conventional briars. Don’t need any pipe cleaners at all while smoking my metal-stem Kirsten.

Lunch featured King Oscar “Tiny Tots” bristling sardines on German-baked pumpernickel, with Thumann’s “Düsseldorf” mustard, raw onion, and lots of black pepper. And tomato basil soup. All good!

I received ten 100g tins of Solani 660, Silver Flake from SmokingPipes yesterday.

I ordered a tin of this to try; no burley (other than the DFK) and no cavendish... I might even like it.

I also ordered about the last thing I need... a pipe.
Been wanting a spigot for a while but most of them are just way too ugly IMO. And then there are the ones like Savinelli and Stanwell that only 'look like' a spigot but really are just a conventional tenon with some gaudy silver decoration. But I saw an unsmoked, Peterson estate for a reasonable price so I grabbed it. Hopefully it's a real spigot or it's going back.

I don't care for Petes really. I don't like the 'system' or the 'p-lip', the heavily lacquered finishes or the big blocky look. Plus, I've read on several sites that Petes have a tendency to smoke wet. Well this one isn't a 'system' (if it is, it wasn't mentioned in the ad) it's a fishtail and it doesn't look too blocky IMO. It looks utilitarian, which is just fine by me. Hopefully it smokes ok. If not, you might just see it up for sale.

-edit-

Well the pipe arrived and it is a real spigot. :thumb: That's pretty much what made me decide to buy it; I don't think Peterson makes fake spigots.
I have a bit of Solani 660 airing out to try in it. Expecting it to taste terrible like most things do in a new pipe. Should just break out the ol' PA and be done with it but I digress... I'll have to try the 660 this weekend in a well seasoned Barling in order to get an honest opinion of it... but that will be hard to do since I have a new toy...

Thanks. As I said before, I'm not a big Pete fan either, but I like this pipe.

Smoking a fill of Solani 660 in a Barling Canadian. So far it's only okay but no matter, I seldom like a new blend right away. Right now, the DFK seems to mute the Va too much and I find myself looking for the perique which of course, isn't there. I do like my tobacco pretty dry but not 'dry as a bone'. Especially not stored dry as a bone, that seems to deplete the flavor. I think this 660 will grow on me. I need to smoke a few more bowls.

Don't like this as much as the bullseye. Too mild, mostly grassy / not fruity with some creamy, sweetish topping that I don't like. I didn't care for it fresh and a few years in a jar hasn't helped. I’m not an aro guy, but about a year ago I bought five Solani ready rubbed aros to try. I had previously tried three of them:

113, Sweet Mystery
127, Green Label
131, Red Label

I didn’t much like any of those. Today I opened the fourth: 333, Festival. SmokingPipes says of it:

“Virginias, black Cavendish, Burley and a touch of plum come together to form this delightful blend, Festival from Solani.”

Smoking a fill now, in my old Kirsten. And, by golly, I think I like it. Mild and tasty. One fill isn’t enough for a “buy more” decision, but it’s certainly better than the first three that I tried.

Like all Dan Tobacco flakes that I know of, there’s a single stack of somewhat irregular rectangular flakes that tend to be hard to separate — sometimes impossible. In the latter case, I just gouge a hunk out with my thumbnail and cut it up.

Puffing Wessex Classic Virginia with a couple of years on it in my old Kirsten. This red Virginia VaPer is just excellent. Mostly rubbed out, with a few clumps. Hard to find in stock though.

Getting ready for Kaiserhof German restaurant. Hoping that stuffed peppers, a Saturday evening offering, will still be available. My waitress usually saves an order for me. Covered with melted cheese and drenched with delish sauce. Good!

How was it? I like it better without the cav plug in the center. That's like the toilet paper core, you toss that.

I really enjoyed the stuff rott but it seems to have sweetened/smoothed out some more with jar time. Just a week shy of 2 years in the jar. Just rubbed it out and stuffed it, thinking about trying to master fold and stuff with it to see what difference that will make

I always shuck the cav plug out of the center, then fold the disks in half, straighten the strands somewhat and slide them into a pipe. If it's a short pipe, like a prince, 2 coins will do it easily but I have to fold them in half twice.

I like Bullseye much better with a little age on it. Mine is around 5 yrs old. I have PS Navy flake of the same age. That's really nice with age on it too, and not very good fresh IMO. It's now starting to taste like candy.

I’m not an aro guy, but about a year ago I bought five Solani ready-rubbed aros to try:

113 - Sweet Mystery
127 - Green Label
131 - Red Label
333 - Festival
369 - Blue Label

I tried them in numerical order. I didn’t like the first three, so was loathe to open the fourth, 333. But I finally did, and, by George, I liked it — the first aro that I’ve ever liked. Its “aro” component wasn’t too strong, and it had real tobacco flavor.

And yesterday, I opened the fifth, 369, and I like it too! SmokingPipes says of it:

“Solani Blue Label is a smooth, sweet, and natural blend with bright and red Virginias, burley, mellow black Cavendish, and Perique. Wild Cut.”

Smoking some now in my Tinsky billiard. It’s zippier than the 333. I’ll certainly be buying more, but haven’t yet decided if it’ll be 333 or 369. Or both.

Puffing Solani 660, Silver Flake, in my Mark Tinsky billiard. I discovered the 660 a few months ago, and regret that I didn’t discover it years ago. I guess that it’s the “dark fired Kentucky” that sets it apart. I now have quite a stash of it on hand.

I just received five 50g tins of Solani 333, Festival. Puffing a fill of it now in my Tinsky billiard. Festival is the only aromatic I’ve found that I really like. Good tobacco, and the flavoring isn’t too intense. At first I thought that I liked Solani 369, Blue Label, too, but changed my mind.

I also received five 100g tins of Solani 660, Silver Flake. Maybe my favorite tobacco, ever. Surprising that such a good tobacco is usually in stock. I suspect that the fact that it’s only available in 100g tins puts people off. That put me off for a long time.

I like this pipe for many reasons, not the least of which is the fact that it's a sitter. It's just a plain Canadian with a flat on the bottom... which makes it sit upright, as a pipe should, instead of tipping over and dumping ash all over the place the minute you set it down. I've a good mind to take all my other straight pipes to the belt sander to make them behave nicely on a flat surface like this one does. I like pokers and cherrywoods too. Because they sit. What kind of a damn fool designs a pipe that dumps over when you set it down anyway?!? Yep, think I will. I'll get a garnet belt and make every pipe a sitter.

Puffing Solani 660, Silver Flake, in my Tinsky billiard. I LOVE this tobacco! Maybe it’s the “dark-fired Kentucky”. I didn’t know what “dark-fired” meant, so I asked Kay at SmokingPipes, who directed me to this info:

“Kentucky fire-cured tobacco is Stalk-Cured under controlled humidity in barns with a series of gentle smoldering hardwood fires throughout. Considerable care is taken to achieve proper yellowing; firing requires considerable skill so as not to "burn" the tobacco or cause tobacco rot through too high humidity. The resulting tobacco possesses a powerful smoky note reminiscent of smoked meats and provides a rich "smoky & sweet note" in tobacco products. Fire-Cured Tobacco is much less pungent than Latakia, a sun-cured & smoke-cured tobacco produced in the mid-east with a unique fuel source.”

I’m not a big fan of Latakia, but I sure like dark-fired Kentucky.

Puffing Gordon Pym (Dan Tobacco) in my old Kirsten. Not only is this the only English mixture that I like, I actually like it quite a lot. Here’s what Tobacco Reviews says of it:

“This blend contains golden Virginia, Maryland and a little dark fired Virginia that gives this blend a profound flavor. Precious Oriental tobacco gives a soft tangy flavor that is complimented by Syrian latakia. Broad-cut with a slow, even burn, especially in bigger bowls.”

So besides the moderate Latakia, perhaps it’s the “dark fired Virginia” that appeals to me. Solani 660, Silver Flake, is possibly my favorite tobacco, and it has dark fired Kentucky.

Garage-only pipe? Is there such a thing?
Do yourself a favor and get a forever stem for that pipe and pitch the filter. If you're attached to the filter concept tho, the best ones IMO are the 6mm Savinelli. It's just a little triangle piece of balsa wood. They smoke pretty true, I.e. they don't alter or sap the flavor.

Smoked a bowl of Ennerdale on a walk yesterday. Smoked it in an old grubby cob with a forever stem.
Probably going to go on another walk today. Got some G&H Brown Flake Vanilla (I think) drying out to smoke in my freshly ghosted cob.

I picked up 5 tins of it. It's not here yet. Figure I'll mason jar one of them and stash the other 4 away to age. What I really want now is some of the Carolina flake without perique so I can compare the two but alas, that one was sold out. Small bowl of Bayou Morning Flake last night in a Savinelli prince.
It's interesting. Lots of dry hay and pepper with a touch of dried fruit. That's my first bowl impression anyway. The nose burn on retro reminded me of a fine, freshly prepared horseradish; so good... but of course I wouldn't want it every meal.
I imagine the room note is probably awful :D
This bowl was dried quite a while. Want to try a bowl with a little more moisture soon.

Trying a small bowl of this Carolina Red Flake w/ Perique, just to see what it's about.

Pretty similar to the Bayou Morning Flake, actually. Very dry, grassy taste with a good amount of pepper. Not as much as the Bayou Morning tho by a long shot and not as earthy. I smoked this pretty moist. Need to let some dry out more and give that a shot. TBH, so far I like my stand-by VaPer better: PS Lux Bullseye with a few years on it and with the Cavendish centers removed. I'm always amazed how good that blend is, especially for the price. I think the Bullseye must be topped with a touch of vanilla, either that or it bleeds from the Cavendish center into the outer wraps. Whatever the case, the topping compliments the tobacco rather nicely. Need to burn a few more bowls of this Carolina Red. I'll call it 'research'.

Edit...

Tried a little more but dried it out more first. It's better IMO; more pronounced flavors with some dried fruit in the background. Pretty similar to the Bayou Morning actually but quite a bit ligter on the perique it would seem.

I didn't much like the first bowl but that is a given. I never like the first bowl of a new tobacco.

It's 656 - ABF that I generally don't like. 660 is pretty good. I'm not a huge fan of burley in my virginia - and that includes DFK. But the 660 doesn't seem to have much of that musty, wet cardboard taste that I usually get from burley and the spicyness (that must come) from the firing presents more like perique - at least to me anyway. I also enjoy the occasional bowl of Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky from time to time which, IMO anyway, is a similar blend albeit a little adulterated with toppings etc.

It's hard to find a Dan blend that's no good, aromatic or otherwise. I enjoy their Sweet Vanilla Honeydew and Bill Baileys Balkan Blend. I have a tin of Devils Holiday and also one of Velvet that I need to try some day. Both were gifts as I usually shy away from tins if favor of bulk. Velvet is supposed to be flavored with champagne and Guinness. Dan Tobacco seems to shy away from the use of black Cavendish and burley. Probably why I usually like their blends.

Burned a fresh bowl of G&H Louisiana flake on the river yesterday. I also added a small amount of Solani Green Label for improved 'boat note'. The aro didn't do the Louisiana flake any favors but it still wasn't bad.

I’ve tried all of the Solani aros. The only one I like at all is 333, “Festival”. I don’t think that I’ll be buying any more of it though.

Currently puffing “Holmer Knudsen’s”, another good Dan Tobacco aro.

I bought this Black House a really long time ago, before I had any idea about anything piping. I just always remembered that it had black Cavendish. However reading it now its really mostly a lot of everything else, Latakia and perique based. Pretty happy its not sweet at all with the Cavendish in it as I was worried about it.

Puffing a mixture in my old Kirsten. Hamborger Veermaster (Dan Tobacco), and a lesser amount of Solani 656, Aged Burley Flake. Going down pretty well. The ABF provides body that the HV lacks.

Almost finished with a bowl of Peterson Elizabethan Mixture in a sandblasted Savinelli Bing's Favorite.

On deck is Peterson Irish Flake in a Savinelli Champagne bulldog.

Burned a few cobloads of various Gawith Hoggarth flakes on the river yesterday and the day before.

You know, I've been smoking therapeutic doses of pipe tobacco thru most of this coronavirus scare and so have a couples others I know. And guess what?!?!! Not a single pipe smoker I know has come down with covid19! Clearly, pipe tobacco is 100% effective against coronavirus / covid19. Thank you and good night.

I’ve read several news articles saying that smokers have a significantly lower incidence of Covid-19. The articles then state that smokers that do get Covid-19 have a higher death rate. But I suspect that pipe smokers, who don’t inhale, don’t have that higher death rate. 99% of smokers these days are cigarette smokers.

Puffing Carter Hall in my Tinsky brandy. Going down pretty good — has a light topping of some sort. I can remember when Carter Hall was offered for about 35¢ per pouch at most drugstores.

Read that same article a while ago. It does make sense tho no zero sense trying to convince the anti smoking brigade. Heck they want erase any photo or movie that shows someone smoking. If cigar or pipe smoking was so deadly then how the hell are they alive, when their forebears should've been turning toes up at early ages. Or did the anti smoking fanatic have no male grandparents?

Going outside for a small bowl of a VaPer of some kind. Looking for a decent chardonnay around here...

Started a cob-mod project today. Can't wait to burn a few break-in bowls in one once they are done.

Puffing Patriot Flake (Dan Tobacco) in my Luciano squat bulldog. One of my favorite tobaccos. Quite mild, it’s been extensively press fermented, which gives it a distinctive flavor. Good stuff.

I like its tin art work too. A Minute Man holding his rifle. He’s alert and expecting action, but is unafraid.

Puffing Patriot Flake (Dan Tobacco) in my Ardor Rhodesian:

Italian Estates Ardor Urano Rhodesian with Boxwood (DR) (2019) | Buy Italian Estates Tobacco Pipes at Smokingpipes (http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/estate/italy/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=362903)

As said in the SmokingPipes blurb, it’s a palm-filler. At 3.2 ounces there’s a lot of briar in this baby. It’s a solid sitter too.

Burned a bowl of SG Louisiana flake in the Dagner while rolling on Fribbos.
