Burned a bowl of rubbed out G&H, Glengarry Flake interspersed with coins of Black Twist Sliced. Nice smoke.
IDK why I gravitate toward G&H tobaccos. I certainly don't like that Rose Geranium they stink up many of their blends with. Maybe it's because the burley they use doesn't taste like cardboard to me. Maybe it's the light toppings that don't add much to the tin note but show up in the flavor a bit. Not sure but well over half the time I'm reaching for something G&H when I find time for a bowl. I like SG blends a lot too.

This evening I am having a bowl of SG FVF in my extra large Savinelli 606EX.:piper: This tobacco is one of my favorites, but it is a very difficult tobacco to prepare. FVF is made in the old fashion way with equipment made in the 1800's resulting in flakes of tobacco very moist and having a variety of thickness. I generally use the fold and stuff process, but I have to be very diligent in the drying process choosing flakes with thin consistent thickness and carefully drying it out to the ideal moisture content. Before choosing this smoke I have to ask myself are you ready to do all that is needed to smoke and enjoy this tobacco. Sometimes I simply select another tobacco.:mope: Last week I decided to check the internet to see how others prepared this tobacco and viewed several methods and I decided to try one technique. So last week I refilled my empty baggie with some FVF from my mason jar and dried it out for 41/2 hours near my water heater. I then carefully cut my flake tobacco into small cubes, restocked my baggie and that is what I am smoking this evening.:thumb: My smoke this evening is absolutely delicious. FVF has to be smoke slowly and you do need to relight more frequently, but it is important to relight lightly without charring the tobacco to maintain a clean sharp flavor profile. I created two baggies of the FVF, one with the cut cubes and the other with original flakes. Now I can choose whether I want to take the time to do a fold and stuff or use the cubes. I topped my smoke with a large mug of "Guinness Draught" brew and I am having a great evening.:beerchug:

Agree! I cut FVF into small cubes, spread it out on a plate, and let it dry while smoking a fill of something that’s combustible right out of the tin.

I just opened a 3 yo tin of F&T Cut Virginia Plug. It’s one of three F&T Virginia flakes that I have in stock. The other two are Vintage and Special Brown Flake. CVP is a robust tobacco with a light topping — very tasty.

Burning a smal bowl of some unknown G&H flake. I ordered a pound of Rum Twist, among other things from P&C a while back. The package arrived with all the other stuff correct but contained a 5oz bag of some kind of flake labeled 'Rum Twist'. The shipper showing the remainder of the so called Rum Twist on backorder. So obviously I called to straighten all this out and ended up with a bag of (obviously G&H) mystery flake. I'm not sure what this is. It smells somewhat fruity in the jar with a touch of lakeland perfume. Don't taste fruity at all. It tastes more like a G&H blend with vanilla added. I'm thinking this might be G&H Brown Flake Vanilla based in what I'm reading on TR. All in all, not a bad flake at all though it sure as heck ain't Rum Twist. Anyway, it's smoldering away in a Stanwell brushed Rhodesian.

I'd be lying if I said that sounded good. I think I'd have to drown that mixture in bacon grease before I'd eat it. Of course, you could drown an old shoe in bacon grease and it'd probably taste good. Thinking I'll eat some braunschweiger and vintage white cheddar on rye Triscuits this evening with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon. I've got some good mustard and a nice, fresh onion on hand too.

At least we can agree on the braunschweiger. I generally like Boar's Head meats, but for braunschweiger they only offer a “Lite” version, so I buy Thumann's instead. I’ll be having some for lunch tomorrow on German-baked pumpernickel with mustard, raw sweet onion, and lots of black pepper.

+1 on Boar's Head. Their stuff is usually very good. Didn't even know they made a braunschweiger. I get mine from a meat market where they make their own recipe in house. It's quite good. I usually buy sweet onions too but next time I'm going to get a red onion instead. Sometimes the sweet ones aren't oniony enough.

Burned a bowl of Red Rap last evening. Well, not exactly 1 bowl... I had loaded up and was smoking one of my larger pipes for a nice long smoke while reading a book. I was not quite halfway thru it when along comes the resident kitten who took it upon herself to (for no apparent reason) bat the pipe out of my hand. Of course it landed upside-down on the floor and the tobacco went everywhere. Undaunted... well, semi-daunted, I loaded up my much smaller, Stanwell Rhodesian (which doesn't smoke Red Rap nearly as well btw) and smoked that instead.

I have no idea what I'm smoking and it's in a no name briar I got from a flea market.

The tobacco is from a friend at my local shop. When he's not really into a tobacco, it goes into a catch all container. There's no telling what all ended up in it.
He decided to learn how to press tobacco into cakes, so he experimented with the catch all jars.
I know it has Virginia, Perique and dark fired. I think I may get a hint of Oriental every now and then. No Latakia.

I'm actually enjoying it.

I just got out my jar of F&T Blackjack. For no good reason, except it was in the back of the cupboard, I haven’t smoked any of this stuff for quite awhile. A straight Virginia, it doesn’t need any drying out. No flavoring added, but it has a definite citrus character.

Smoking my Tinsky brandy today. First fill was The Mallard, now puffing Patriot Flake. Both of these Dan Tobacco offerings are superb Virginias, and similar. Both are grown in tropical regions and press fermented. Similar taste too, but different enough to justify stocking both.

Edit: The press fermentation process sounds similar to that used for perique.

Trying a small bowl of Solani Green Label. I can tell it probably smells nice but unfortunately, it's pretty much the same thin, airy, perfumey experience offered by most aromatics. It's not as thin as some but definitely not meaty like the blends I usually gravitate toward. I wonder if it'll mix well with something like Dark Plug to sort of temper the stench and stabilize the burn.

This green label reminds me of a DE aromaitc. It's got the same feel to it. Wouldn't be surprised if they were both made by the same company.

As far as these aros go, I actually like the Ennerdale better. Never thought I'd say that btw... Ennerdale is perfumey but you can tell the tobacco is there and still has some backbone to it. Maybe it's because it contains no black cav; I still can't see the purpose of that stuff.

I've got a small pile of G&H Cherry Cream Flake diced into cubes and drying out in the event that I get a chance to smoke it sometime in the next day or so. This is one you might like. From the description it's a straight Va with a cherry cream essence. It smells like cherry jam in the jar - you'd think you could eat it. However, once on fire, it doesn't come off as an overpowering aromatic; just a nice Va with a light addition. Nice change of pace.

For the past three days I’ve been smoking “Gordon Pym” (Dan Tobacco), a new-to-me tobacco. From Tobacco Reviews:

“This blend contains golden Virginia, Maryland and a little dark fired Virginia that gives this blend a profound flavor. Precious Oriental tobacco gives a soft tangy flavor that is complimented by Syrian latakia. Broad-cut with a slow, even burn, especially in bigger bowls.” (I doubt the Syrian latakia though — don’t think Syrian is available nowadays.)

I’m generally not a big fan of English mixtures, but this stuff is flat out delicious! I just ordered two more tins. Right out of a newly opened tin it’s dry enough to burn easily. Wonderful tin note, and it’s pretty to boot, with colors ranging from bright tan through dark brown. Puffing it now in my old Kirsten.

And made a delish smash burger for lunch. I have a smasher similar to the one that the SmashBurger restaurants use — it makes the patties uniformly thin (~5/16”) with top and bottom surfaces flat and parallel. And forces the patty hard against my iron griddle to get a crispy crust.

Had a small bowl of Stokkebye Bullseye Flake in a Stanwell. Had a bowl of the same blend a week ago in a Baraccini stack poker. It was better in the poker. Bullseye is a nice blend. It'd probably be better yet without that turd of black Cavendish in the middle. Never could see a use for Cavendish. In the near future I'll have to try discarding the bullseye and see if it makes a difference.

Having a nice bowl of a mix of Bullseye Flake and McClelland 2015.
Got a glass of chardonnay to keep it company.
Nice pepper in this mixture. Sweet and fruity too. Ok with the chardonnay but I've had better pairings. Maybe a sauvignon blanc would have been a better choice. I won't know because I have only 1 more bottle of sauvignon blanc and I'm saving it for pork chops with mushrooms. :D

Not sure since this bowl is about half 2015. This particular bowl is quite nice tho.
I expect Bullseye to be more intense without the cav. Cavendish seems to water everything else down at the price of a slight addition in sweetness. Just like burley in an English tends to dull the citrus notes. I hate that. My stash of Bullseye has been aging for 3 or more years. It's getting quite tasty. For example, the pepper is noticeable now. It wasn't when it was fresh. Red Rap has Cavendish too but it's tasty in spite of it. Maybe it's got a Virginia based Cavendish or something instead of Green River burley. Burley, in any form, is a curse to Virginia tobacco. It belongs on its own. I can appreciate a bowl of Five Brothers, but keep it out of my Virginia blends. That's my take on it anyway.

Good to see you around again, Brandon.

Puffing a new-to-me tobacco: Solani 660, Silver Flake (AKA Silver Label). SmokingPipes says of it:

“Solani Silver Label is a medium to full flake made from ripe red Virginia and spicy, dark-fired Kentucky.”

My initial impression is quite positive — fairly mild, tasty, and quite different from any of my other tobaccos. Flake? It’s damned near fully rubbed out — OK by me though. Dry out of a new tin, it lights and burns easily. Usually available at SmokingPipes.

Silver Flake comes only in rectangular 100g tins. Those don’t seal at all, so I put it into a Weck 742 Mold canning jar, which it filled almost completely.

BTW – I really like the Weck “Mold” jars for tobacco. They’re wide at the top, making it easy to get tobacco in and out. I use the Weck 741 Mold jars for tobacco from 50g tins.

MOAR debullseyed Bullseye flake. Maybe this time I'll try it with a Honey Brown lager since wine is for evenings IMO. I was saving the bullseyes since I have an aversion to throwing good tobacco away. But then I tried crumbling a couple of them up and dropping them on top of the charge before a relight. They add nothing. Nothing that I care about anyway. Now I just give them a fling. They remind me of the core in the center of a roll of paper; looks useful but really isn't.

Well after trying all my collection of pipes from my grandpa I finally broke down and bought a shiny new pipe. First it was an epic orgy at CI in PA and Horseshoe was a horrible influence on me, basically forced me to buy this pipe. Pics don't do it justice but it's a Stanwell Black Diamond 185. Had a few bowls already, now trying some WO Larsen special edition from 2013 that I picked up for cheap too.

Ahh yes... and so it begins!
But even with the occasional pipe purchase you will still spend far less on pipes and tobacco than you would on cigars... unless you go nuts, of course. What did that pipe run you? Less than $100? Provided you don't lose or break it, it'll last the rest of your life. Now what's a box of decent cigars cost? And how long will those last?

Just to clarify, what I'm saying is not: 'see how much money you're saving?' What I'm saying is: 'feel free to buy more pipes!'

Yes its a work in progress for sure, I am going to give the Acadian a go in a different pipe tonight or tomorrow. In hind sight trying my first bowl of it in that pipe was probably not my greatest idea, but I was so excited about both it didnt occur to me. I don't think I have ever had a blend like it or similar to it yet in my short piping career so I can't compare it to anything. It's not super over the top in any one area just a really good smooth enjoyable smoke even in a new pipe.
