Well I considered just using rum too. That article mentions 'spirits' but doesn't go into any more detail.

What's wrong with that flake? It looks just like G&H Louisana Flake. Can't be all that bad.
If I ever decided to make flake I'd weld up some bolt-together contraption so I could clamp it up and then 'stove' (lol) it in the oven while it's under pressure. It's not something I plan on doing tho. There are so many wonderful flakes out there already that I can't see the point... that and I already have decent stockpiles of all my favorites so why re-invent the wheel? I don't even have the time to try the ones that are already out there.

It just delaminates when you slice it into flakes. It was a good smoke while it lasted. You've got a point about reinventing the wheel. There are so many great blends already out there ready to smoke. Although I save a little money buying the whole leaf, when you consider all the time it takes to come up with a good blend, there's little savings. I do enjoy working with the leaves and stretching them out, and the smells are fantastic when you open up a bag of the stuff. That's what keeps me coming back to it, that and when I get compliments on something I made.

I liked that last bowl so much that I am having another small bowl of Five Brothers in a Dr. Grabow billiard.

Probably your method of cutting is the culprit. I've considered designing and building a modern, quality tobacco slicer with a replaceable, disposable blade because there doesn't seem to be such a thing available anywhere. You look online and all you find are these ancient, cast iron things that are collectable and cost a fortune and are probably dull as mud and would take forever to sharpen. Maybe there's a market for a decent flake slicer... if not for the 'make your own flake' market, possibly for the 'I like to smoke plug tobacco' market.

Oh, and I burned a gourd calabash full of SRT last night.

I cut them with an ulu; maybe that was the problem. A guy in our pipe club buys those old plug cutters on Ebay and restores them. I'd buy one if I knew that it worked.

Just finished a bowl of some of my stoved Virginia topped with some Five Brothers in an old Dunhill billiard with faint stampings.

We had the Knoxville Pipe Club meeting last night. The owner of the venue, Smoky's Tobacco and Cigars, Dave Watson, spent some time with us and cracked open an 8 oz. bag of Penzance to share with us. Most of us had a bowl of it when he opened it. When Dave left he divided the rest of the Penzance into baggies and gave us each one! One of our members also passed around a jar of some McClelland 3 Oaks Syrian.

Is that MacBitey at all? I've been tempted to pick up a few tins as I've really liked the HH line but I've stayed away from the pure Va. I don't care much for that MacBaren bite... and it does get me with too many of their regular blends. Haven't gotten bit by the HH line although I've only had a few.

I also tend to get that MacBite.
This one has a bit of that straight VA sharpness, but not the same as the usual Mac Baren bite. It does need a little drying out of the tin, but some DGT works pretty well on this one.
It is a quality virginia. It is definitely worth picking up a tin to try. I'm probably going to pick up several to cellar, so I can see how some age treats it.
Not a "blow you away" blend, but a decent straight virginia.

I prefer to rub out flakes before smoking them. But there are others that like to fold and stuff the flakes. Rubbing out the flakes gives a more uniform distribution of the tobacco. The tobacco burns better and doesn't require as many relights.

From what I've read, it's supposedly the same blend but I pick up a top note on the sliced - probably tonquin - that isn't there on the rope.

IMO a very coarse rub is best with that blend but try it a few different ways. It'll be a little different each way.
Dry that one till almost crispy too. It comes very wet and doesn't burn unless it's quite dry. Doesn't taste right either IMO if too wet.

I'm leaning toward a bowl of Rum Twist or Black Twist Sliced in the gourd tonight...

This may actually be the sliced, since you mentioned it. The cut looks like it - lots of slim coins and stringy ribbons. It was in a jar that I had put some leftover from a larger quantity. Yes, I detect the top note too.

Puffing Wessex Fragrant Virginia in my old Kirsten. This tobacco is new to me. SmokingPipes pipes says of it:

“Brigade Original Fragrant Virginia, by Wessex, is a naturally aromatic pipe tobacco flavored with traditional West Country Cider.”

The red Virginia is good, and the cider topping is tasty. It’s rather similar to rum flavored F&T Special Brown Flake. Since I have a large stock of SBF, I don’t plan to buy any more of this Wessex tobacco.

Edit: A grocery near my home has a dip-it-yourself hot bar. I often go there for lunch. But today, none of the offerings really appealed to me. So I went to the cheese counter and bought a 3/4 lb. wedge of Midnight Moon goat cheese. Sat down at a table and ate the whole wedge. Good!

Smoking my Tinsky brandy today. And puffing a new to me tobacco with an unlikely name: “The Mallard”, made by Dan Tobacco. I figured that it would be similar to Hamborger Veermaster, another Dan Tobacco, so my first fill of the day was HV, to get calibrated. TM isn’t quite as mild as HV, but its flavor is fuller and different — quite savory. It’s dry out of the tin — no further drying needed. Mine is now in a jar to limit further drying. Here’s what SmokingPipes says of it:

“The Mallard is a smooth Ready Rubbed Flake based on the extraordinarily rich and full-bodied sweet Zambian Virginia that was carefully fermented and matured under pressure. There was no need to add any flavorings to enhance its aroma, and it has found great reception among committed friends of pure natural tobacco and among lovers of flavored pipe mixtures as well. You can look forward to a wonderfully gentle smoke with a perfectly rich and sweet Virginia taste.”

I bought five tins of it. It’s pricey — $15 per 50g tin before quantity discounts. Time will tell if it’s worth that price, but I’m suspecting that I’ll find it to be so.

Be careful using Everclear on that gourd - it might ruin it. I've not cleaned mine yet either, but it seems like it might damage it. I know it will ruin a Cherry wood pipe; dries it out so much it cracks and splits.

Well I went and done it. I cleaned out all the gunk I could reach by twisting the end of several pipe cleaners into J with a squashed loop at the business end and used Bacardi Black as a solvent. I poured rum into the gourd and scrubbed all around with one of the pipe cleaners, then dumped the filthy gunk out. They say you're supposed to keep the spirits off the cork gasket but that became impossible since chunks of gunk plugged the hole in the ferrule. I had to dump out the big end and just wipe the gasket clean with a dry rag right away. Went thru about 3 fingers of rum in the process. I also used a few gentle blasts of compressed air to blow out some of the junk I couldn't reach. It's drying now, hopefully none the worse for wear.

Tough to troubleshoot when you don't know what you are doing or havent seen what it's supposed to look like in real life. I have to assume that if I was guessing right I did not let the tobacco out of the pouch long enough to dry out first. I never did get a really good ember on top and when i thought i was finished and couldnt light it anymore with all the junk on top, I dumped it and there were some fresh leaves on the bottom. I also probably packed on the loose side rather than the tighter side so the draw was pretty loose I think but not sure. Even for drug store tobacco it was pretty flavorful i think so I look forward to the good stuff someday.

A few, but it's also hard to tell if I am keeping the rhythm right or how long in between puffs to go. I feel like I was smoking a bit on the fast side just mentally thinking I needed to keep it lit, who knows its all a mind screw at first.

Get a char light at first, let it go out, tamp it down and re-light.
I keep occassionally tamping. And I "purged" to ensure the bowl was lit yet not making it get too hot.

Puffing F&T Special Brown Flake in my old Kirsten. I’m generally not a fan of flavored tobaccos, but this dark Virginia, with its rum topping, is an exception.

STG is now putting all flakes in space-hogging round tins instead of the compact rectangular 50g tins. Consequently, I won’t be buying them going forward. But I’ll have to make an exception for SBF.

My first two fills this morning were Patriot Flake and The Mallard, both made by Dan Tobacco (Germany). They’re rather similar, and I’m trying to decide which one, or both, that I’ll stock.

The similarities: Both are mild with LOTS of delish, but different, flavor. Both have press-aged, fermented Virginias from tropical regions: India for PF; Africa for TM. TM is slightly milder than PF.

The differences: PF is whole flakes, TM is broken flake. PF is moderately pricey, and TM is very pricey ($15 per 50g tin). Because of its lower price, PF is more often “out of stock”.

I opened a 4 yo tin of Dunhill Flake yesterday — a good plain Virginia. Puffing that now in my Tinsky billiard. Only the second day that I’ve smoked it.

I bought this pipe from the American Estates section of SmokingPipes. It had been smoked, but not very darned much. The lower part of the chamber wasn’t even charred. I think that the original owner had put in one fill, but only smoked half of it. That’s the good news — I got an essentially new pipe for significantly less than half the new price.

The bad news is that that one fill was a Lakeland that really colored the pipe. After four fills on the first day, and swabbing its draft with Everclear, the Lakeland coloration is much diminished today. Thank goodness!

Flavors were present from the char light. But I got a little "juice" thru the stem. I'm guessing that I didn't let it dry enough or got the bowl too hot? Plus I'm not getting the entire bowl to burn. Had about 1/4 of the bowl that wouldn't burn.

Good deal!
You may have been smoking too fast too. If you smoke too fast you can end up with a wet heel because the pipe doesn't have enough time to absorb and dissipate the moisture. If you're outside in the cold you get more condensation too. Either way, just shake that drop out the stem the minute you feel a gurgle. (Or use a pipe cleaner if you're indoors) keeps the heel drier and keeps the nasty stuff out of your mouth :pipe:

Well sort of. Remember, you sip on a pipe. You don't puff on it like a cigar. Proper cadence is varing from light sips to a little heavier ones, and also varying frequency to keep the pipe burning but close to going out... and of course you need to throw tamping into the mix too. I haven't figured it out completely either. I've never smoked a bowl to the bottom with just 1 match. I have gotten my match use down from what it was when I started out though, and about half the time I can manage to burn the bowl all the way down without a wad of wet tobacco at the bottom. However, that will not happen when smoking outside in the cold or when smoking a new pipe without any cake in the heel. Not for me anyway.

It’s not a magic bullet, but it’s as good as any, and better than some. If I get a little on the shank it mostly rubs off easily. Except if some gets into the stamping near the bottom end of the shank, so I protect that with a pice of Scotch Tape.

Oh there was mustard... believe that. The bread was a vollkornbrot rye. Forgot about the fresh ground black pepper this time around. Excellent sandwich!

Reminds me, I was at a Meijer store in northern MI a while back with my sister who, unlike me, did not move to VA. I was looking for scrapple in the breakfast meat cooler & realized it was futile as I was in MI, not the midatlantic region. She says, "What's scrapple?"
"It's like a meatloaf of ground liver, corn meal, and pork 'byproducts'."
She turned a bit pale and said, "I would never eat that!"

Puffing “The Mallard” (Dan Tobacco) in my newish Tinsky billiard. TM is a VERY tasty straight Virginia.

This is the third day that I’ve smoked this pipe. The Lakeland taste is nearly gone — I probably wouldn’t notice it at all if I wasn’t looking for it.

Funny! And a real possibility.

Another possibility: The first day I smoked this pipe I found its draw a bit tight. And if a crumb of tobacco got into the bit, the draw got really tight, and it was hard to clear with a pipe cleaner. I thought I was going to have to ream out the bit with a 1.5mm round needle file. But when I sat down to do that I discovered some detritus in the bit, close to its near end. I was able to push that out with a straightened paper clip, after which the draw was free and easy. Maybe the original owner hadn’t discovered that detritus, so returned the pipe. His loss, my gain!

Because smoking hampers recovery? I have read that is the case; that it reduces circulation to the affected area.

Just lit up a bowl of Condor on top of a layer of 1993 Prince Albert in a Dr. Grabow billiard. Whoever sent me this 1993 Prince Albert, THANKS! I think maybe it was Bruck or BryGuySC? This stuff smells like chocolate now and is smooth and mellow.

That and the fact that too much of anything is usually not a good idea.

On that note, Deer Season is once again upon us. This weekend I intend to smoke like a fiend while drinking copious amounts of coffee and eating jerky, cheese and nuts. I may even see a deer or two, you never know... Deer and turkey season is pretty much the reason I smoke pipes and cigars in the first place. It'll probably take my tongue a week to recover :p

There is a heavy, 10" iron skillet that resides atop my stove pretty much all the time
I turn the burner on for maybe 30 seconds and then turn it off - just so the bottom of the skillet gets warm but far from hot

That will come in time. Try the above and see if that helps any. Drawing slow is certainly key.

Also, if you've found a blend that works for you, stick with that for the time being and use the occasion to develop technique. Then try other blends from time to time and see how they compare. I didn't get much from the ropes and twists at first either... well, nothing but a woozy feeling that made me want to lie down. (I was smoking them too wet and puffing too fast but ymmv) Also, don't be stingy with the retro. Pipe blends do tend to lean toward the fragrant end of the taste vs smell spectrum. Not all of them tho.

Finished this last night as I still had half a bowl left over from the previous day. Wasn't as bad as I'd expected. Sunday, although the Erinmore was like tree bark, I could still taste some of the Juicy Fruit topping, which surprised me. What else surprised me was that, although this blend undoubtedly contains burley, it didn't come off as cardboardy to me. Last night, the topping had pretty much disappeared and I was left with a fairly decent tasting blend of seemingly pure tobacco; not harsh at all like I was expecting, although it had picked up a whisp of pepper... which I found enjoyable.

So there you have my petrified, day-old Erinmore review... Is there a badge for that?

How was it? I really like that blend. If it didn't have enough taste you can always rub that one completely out too. I usually prepare that one as a broken flake or cube cut.

Some of these G&H blends you can't rub out. 1792 for example... that one just turns into splinters and sawdust. Can't imagine you'd like 1792 anyway tho. It's one of those 'polarizing' blends that it seems only 'seasoned' pipers enjoy.

I like my Braunschweiger cut 3/8” thick. And I’ve learned that the way to get 3/8” slices is to ask for 1/2” slices. Yesterday, I did just that, but the new girl at the deli counter actually cut them 1/2” thick, bless her heart. So I had nice meaty sandwiches for lunch today (on German-baked pumpernickel). Puffing Aged Burley Flake in my Kirsten. In TobaccoReviews, JimInks wonders if it might have some chocolate flavoring. I’ve had the same thought.

Solani 639, Tropical Mango Flake, is too intensely aromatic for me to enjoy straight. But a small portion of it really brightens-up a staid tobacco. Right now I have it brightening-up Dunhill Navy Rolls.

Re-visiting one of my absolute favorites.
Smoking it in a Seville. Never heard of the pipe but I liked the look and it was $8 at an antique shop.
It cleaned up nicely and smokes great.

One of my favorite things to do on days off is visit antique shops looking for pipes.

This pre-Republic Peterson Shamrock is my best find yet at one. It cost a whopping $20. It was my first briar pipe purchase.

Puffing Patriot Flake (Dan Tobacco), in my stout little Caminetto pot. Grown in a tropical climate, and press fermented, PF is a very flavorsome Virginia.

This morning I had a bowl of Margate in a Sunrise apple. I was going through some of my tins and discovered that the tin of Margate had lost its seal, so now I'm smoking it. Put the rest in a Ball jar with a terracotta humidification stone.

While strolling in the neighborhood today, I had a lovely bowl of Stokkebye bullseye flake with some Luxury Flake on top. Not that I know anything about layering, I just had a tiny bit of the bullseye left, so I filled the rest of the bowl with Luxury :)

Some of my nicest smokes have been the result of just such a thing... some of the worst too...

Not smoking anything lately. Smoked the weekend, Monday and Tuesday. That's enough I think.

That would be a leaf-shaped Hydrostone? I soak them in distilled water so they don’t load up with minerals.

Puffing Wessex Classic Virginia in my Kirsten Mariner. Red Virginia with some Perique — savory.

We’ve had a LOT of rain over the past couple of weeks here in San Diego. And we really needed it. That’s the good news. The bad news is that it revealed that the roof over my kitchen has a leak. My HOA covered it with a sheet of plastic for a temporary fix — expecting a permanent fix soon.

In my (red)neck of the woods, that's a permanent repair... but you have to make sure the 'sheet of plastic' is a blue poly tarp with the edges flapping in the wind.https://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u55/BJ_BOBBI_JO9/MISCELLAENEOUS%20hard%20to%20categorize%20smileys/th23_4_150.gif

>That is exactly what it is, a leaf-shaped hydrostone. I use nanopure water that I get from our lab at work.<

I’m not a big fan of aromatic tobaccos, but I’ve had a jar of Solani 131, Red Label, on hand for a couple of months, and have a fill of it from time to time, as I’m doing now. It’s pretty good — the flavoring isn’t too intense, and the tobacco is decent. SmokingPipes says:

“For Solani's Red Label, a touch of Single malt Scotch has been added to selected bright and red Virginias from the "Old Belt", ripe Burleys and mellow, sweet black Cavendish for a "Tropical Aroma--delicious. Wild Cut.”

Found a jar of MM Missouri Pride in the cellar I forgot about. Didn't care much for it when I bought it 3 years ago but tasting damned good tonight. In this "plan to refinish one day" pipe. Don't know much about it. Was gifted to me with a bunch of other "refinish someday pipes". Says Churchill 1499 meerschaum on it, meerschaum lines with a stem stolen from a Chinese cob. Ugly thing but smokes great.
