Stout, squat bulldogs are my favorite pipe shape.

Puffing Solani 763, White and Black. Partially rubbed out, but a very dense tobacco — I can get a lot of it (by weight) in my pipe.

I gouged out some Hamborger Veermaster — puffing that now in my Luciano stout bulldog. A mild and tasty Virginia. Occasionally I open a tin of HV where it’s possible to extract (with some difficulty) individual flakes. But even then I use the gouging-out technique, which works perfectly well.

No pics, but none needed for my crude gouging-out technique. I just force my thumbnail into the plug of tobacco to get about the right amount out. If my scale tells me I didn't get quite enough, I fish some more bits out of the tin to make the right weight. I say "plug", but it's actually a stack of welded-together flakes.

Puffing Solani Aged Burley Flake in my silver spigot Caminetto pot:

Caminetto Smooth Red Pot with Silver Spigot | Buy Caminetto Tobacco Pipes at Smokingpipes (http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/caminetto/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=135687)

Although short, it’s a substantial little pipe at 1.8 oz. When I bought it, I thought it would be a near-perfect pipe for me because it has so many of the characteristics that I like:

* Straight
* Shallow, broad tobacco chamber
* Thick bowl walls that don’t get too hot (I’m a holder)
* Looks good (in my eyes)
* It’s a pot – my second favorite pipe shape, after bulldogs
* Acrylic bit (easy maintenance, and hardness doesn’t bother me)

And it’s a sitter, to boot. I had some issues with this pipe, and put it away for awhile, but it’s going good now.

I recently bought six Solani tobaccos that I hadn’t tried before — one tin of each. They’re all aromatics, and I’m not an aro guy, so that explains why I hadn’t tried them. I just opened the first of them, Solani 113, Sweet Mystery:

“A wonderful Virginia blend consisting of red sweet and broad bright Virginias, Virginia Flake, and sweet black Cavendish with a pinch of black currant treated with Bacardi and CocoCream. Mystic sweet taste with a fantastic room aroma--outstanding. Wild Cut/Cross Cut/Broken Flake.”

By golly, it’s pretty good — kind of like smoking a piña colada. Certainly a good choice for social situations.

I figure that pipe comes with a year subscription to a 24 hr pipewench: a pretty little 20 something to fill and clean your pipe and rub your shoulders while you smoke.

"Pipewench! Full Virginia Flake, please"

Random but last night I burned 3/4 bowl of 1792 but dumped the last of it and switched to a few coins of G&H Sweet Rum Twist amid complaints that the 1792 reeked of burning plastic. Having no pipewench, I loaded it myself and have yet to clean the pipe...

I opened a 2 yo tin of Solani 633, Virginia with Perique, a day or two ago. Puffing that now in my dear old Kirsten Mariner. Very fine tobacco, but I probably won’t buy more of it. One of its attractions for me was that it came in the compact-storing rectangular 50g tins. But now, like all STG flakes that I know of, it comes in the bulky round Escudo-sized tins. Burned a MM Diplomat full of Peter Stokkebye Navy Flake today on another boat trip.
Good thing the Diplomat has thick walls, this is one of my first cobs and it's all wallered out from smoking it too fast. Makes for a rather large but shallow, pot type pipe though and the walls are still thick enough to smoke cool.
IMO, a cob isn't the best for smoking a virginia. Seems straight Va is more flavorful in a briar but hey, I'm not bringing a good pipe on a river trip.

I just opened a 2 yo tin of Escudo — now puffing a 2nd fill in my Luciano stout bulldog. I had kind of forgotten just how good this stuff is. Dunhill Navy Rolls is a more regal tobacco, but Escudo has its own appeal — more Perique than Navy Rolls.

Edit: I noticed this $900 pipe in SmokingPipes’ American estates last night:

Radice Rubino Rhodesian | Buy Radice Tobacco Pipes at Smokingpipes (http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/radice/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=83615)

I haven’t smoked this pipe in years — probably because I prefer shallower chambers, and I’m not a big fan of Rhodesians. And it was stuck in the back of my pipe drawer. But it has pretty grain from all angles (the reason I bought it), and its finish is a match for either of my two bought-new Dunhills (Bruyere and Amber Root). The circumferential groves are crisp to the eyes, but smooth to the touch.

The Radice has a small defect, though. You can’t see it in the photos, but there’s a slight gap between the bottom of the shank and the bit. If I twist the bit 180°, the gap is still at the bottom of the shank, so the problem is certainly that the shank face isn’t quite perpendicular to the mortise axis. I just pretend that I don’t notice.

Upper 90s and muggy and blistering hot sun today - perfect day to be on the water. Kept having to stow the pipe to take a swim. I must say the rum flake puts up with the strain of intermittent smoking and subsequent relighting much better than the MacB vanilla flake.

We had the Knoxville Pipe Club Meeting last week last week and I got to try some new blends. The first one was a blend developed by Smoky's Tobacco and Cigars; it is called "Smoky's Flake and Perique". Dave was trying to fill a niche vacated by the closing of McClelland and came up with this blend. It is great! So good that I bought a pound of it. The production of the blend is labor intensive - one of the components, Virginia Flakes, is rubbed out by hand by store employees.

Another new one that I tried was Russ Oullette's Acadian Gold - this is a unique blend where they give some Virginia tobacco the same treatment that they use for making Perique, only they don't ferment and press it quite as long due to the high sugar content of the Virginia. This was a good smoke, very different and interesting in flavor. Being a limited edition at PipesandCigars.com, I ordered five tins of it for the cellar.

I’m not an aromatic guy, but some time ago I ordered five Solani aromatics that I’d never tried. The first of those, Solani 113, Sweet Mystery, I didn’t like. A week ago I opened the next one: Solani 127, Green Label. SmokingPipes says:

“A mixture of broad and very ripe Virginias and double fermented black Cavendish, Solani Green Label has a wonderful sweetness with a touch of apple flavor. Wild Cut.”

I’ve smoked it in several different pipes, and enjoyed it. The tobacco is quite good, and the flavoring is tasty and not overbearing.

I’m thinking that I might order more of the 127. But not until I’ve tried the three remaining aromatics.

That actually sounds pretty good. I usually avoid black Cavendish since IMO it tastes like lightly sweet, warm air but sometimes I find it in a condiment percentage in a particular blend and then it doesn't dilute the flavor too much.

Managed to burn a bowl of G&H Rum Flake tonight by the campfire and a couple small bowls of Esoterica Margate later in the night.

Meant to mention on last response; he is a great dog! Possibly 100% American Pitt Bull.
He is a rescue, about 2 years old. Poor guy was neglected when we got him.
You could see his spine sticking out of his back. He has multiple scars and abrasions along one side of his body, some the size of your thumb.
Most of the scars now have white hair around them, making them stand out against his brindle coat. Obviously, the big ones will never have hair.
He is the sweetest, gentlest good boy! Great with little kids, and loves to snuggle!
He is still learning how to play, but he is really smart, and picks up tricks and training very quickly (except for when he is being exceptionally stubborn!).

It’s the prettiest flake that I know of — light, medium, and darker bits of tobacco. Like all F&T flakes, there are two side-by-side stacks of perfectly rectangular flakes that separate easily. Puffing Solani 127, Green Label, in my old Kirsten Mariner. I’m enjoying this tobacco more than any other aromatic that I can recall. It’s a bit fluffy — I can’t get as much into my pipe (by weight) as I can with most other tobaccos.

I always weigh the tobacco charge on my Ohaus Scout Pro digital balance. It reads directly to 0.1 gram resolution, and I can interpolate to 0.05 grams. I can get 2.1 grams of most tobaccos into the Kirsten, but only 1.8 grams of the Solani 127.

However, there's nothing quite like a good aromatic when you find one that works for you.
...and unlike flavored cigars, you never have to suffer a 'sweetened cap' :puke:

I might have to try this one you speak highly of.

Speaking of cigars, I do believe I'll head toward that side this afternoon.
Failing that, I also have a jar of Happy Bogie calling my name for either chaw or smoke.

About to light up my first bowl of GH #25 Mixture in a Comoy's Guildhall billiard. Drinking some iced tea that I made from an assortment of different tea bags that I had lying around in the kitchen cabinet - Earl Grey, Constant Comment, Mint, etc. Just trying to get rid of them, so I made some iced tea with them. It's not bad. Long day at work chained to my desk trying to get out five reports by the end of the day, which I did. I'd much rather work outside, which I do 50% of the time.

Working my way through about 8 different aromatic samples, trying to find something to mix together for a holiday smoke.
So far, all disappointing. I know I'm not an aromatic smoker, but I still try every once and a while. It always comes back to bite me (pun intended).
I'll post a short review of each, when I get through them.

I'll probably just going to open a nice virginia for the holidays.

Puffing F&T Blackjack in my Caminetto pot with silver spigot mount. It’s said to be a red Virginia, but strawberry blonde is closer to the mark. No topping, but tasty — a bit acidic. Dry out of the tin — almost like straw. Consequently it comes in the largest 50g tin I’ve ever seen (to accommodate its bulk). The same diameter as an Escudo tin, but at least 25% taller.

Puffing Solani 131, Red Label in my old Kirsten Mariner. Here’s what SmokingPipes says of it.

“For Solani's Red Label, a touch of Single malt Scotch has been added to selected bright and red Virginias from the "Old Belt", ripe Burleys and mellow, sweet black Cavendish for a "Tropical Aroma--delicious. Wild Cut.”

131 is the third of the five Solani aromatics that I ordered some time ago. I liked the second, 127, Green Label, but I like this one even better. The topping of 127 was fruity whereas the topping of 131 is savory — and I like savory.

A while back I bought this Mark Tinsky brandy from the American Estates section of SmokingPipes:

https://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/mark-tinsky/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=262439

Its condition was “5/5, Unsmoked”. The light band with thin dark stripes is palm wood. This pipe suits me better than any Tinsky pipe I’ve seen: straight; standard pipe shape; right size. It’s a sitter, too. I was lucky to find it for a good price as an estate pipe. The link is for the original offering — not the one I purchased it from. I used that link because it it has the third (top) view.

I first smoked the Tinsky several weeks ago and found it had an issue: the draw was a bit tight, and if I drew in a crumb of tobacco it became REALLY tight, and was hard to clear with a pipe cleaner. I figured that I was going to have to widen the draft with a 1.5 mm round needle file. But I had other things to do, so didn’t start that project until last week. When I did, I discovered that some detritus was firmly lodged in the draft, near the end of the bit. I was able to push it out with a straightened paper clip, after which the draw was free and easy. Very glad about that!

Now puffing some Escudo in the Tinsky, and it’s going down very well. I like this pipe!

Solani 639, Tropical Mango Flake, is an unusual tobacco. There may be other aromatic flakes, but I don’t know of them. It’s too intensely aromatic for me to enjoy straight, but a little bit mixed with a straight Virginia or Vaper can be tasty — and a nice change up for me. Doing that now: 75% Escudo, 25% TMF, in my old Kirsten Mariner.

Jess Chonowitsch Sandblasted Pot with Horn | Buy Jess Chonowitsch Tobacco Pipes at Smokingpipes (http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/chonowitsch/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=277836)

The Chonowitsch is certainly a beautiful pipe, but for smoking, I wouldn’t trade my Caminetto for it, even though it cost me about 10% as much as the Chonowitsch (some years ago). And the Chonowitsch isn’t very pot-like, IMO.

I hate it when an otherwise good boot sells its sole.

I boated up river yesterday with my daughter and one of her friends. Burned a wallered out, MM Diplomat full of SG, Mayor's Chocolate Flake on the way. It's a small boat with a tiller engine. That places me at the stern so even the foulest smoke doesn't bother anyone... except in the event of a tailwind. Even then, chocolate flake smells really nice.

Puffing Patriot Flake (Dan Tobacco, Germany) in my Mark Tinsky straight brandy. Many years ago I smoked a ton of Patriot Flake, but when my B&M stopped carrying it I quit smoking it, because B&Ms were the only places I bought pipe tobacco in those pre-Internet days. I pretty much forgot about Patriot Flake.

But a couple of months ago I came upon an empty tin of Patriot Flake that I’d used to keep paper clips handy, and that brought the tobacco to mind. SmokingPipes listed it, but “out of stock”, of course. But ten days ago it was briefly available, and I snagged five 50g tins. They arrived yesterday, and I’m puffing PF now.

It’s good stuff — lots of flavor, all natural, no topping. Like Hamborger Veermaster, another Dan tobacco, there’s a single irregular stack of flakes that don’t separate easily. Here’s what SmokingPipes says of it:

“A Dan Tobacco tribute to the brave men and women, who fought for freedom, Patriot Flake features U.S. Virginia grades and Virginia tobaccos from Mysore with additional fermentation under pressure. It is press aged, sliced thin and kept in flake form. Easily rubbed out. This blend has an excellent cool burn with a satisfyingly rich, but smooth flavor. Medium Strength.”

https://www.smokingpipes.com/pipe-tobacco/dan-tobacco/Patriot-Flake-50g/product_id/8997

BTW — my tins don’t have the ugly German tobacco warning on the bottom half of the tin label.

 It turned out pretty good - sweet and mellow. It will be good for blending but don't think I'll smoke it straight.

Probably could use a pinch of latakia or perique to give it a little complexity.
First I'd try adding some red va though... just because I usually like red va in things :pipe:

Speaking of Virginias, I had a bowl of Sam Gawith, Navy Flake last night in a Canadian

Last night I smoked a couple of bowls of Walnut in various pipes. This morning I have already had a bowl of some homemade English Crumble Cake in a Comoy's Guildhall billiard and a couple of bowls of Five Brothers in a Dunhill billiard.

On the balcony studying Constitutional Law, smoking C&D Autumn Evening in a Molina (not sure what the shape is) and drinking coffee.
Beautiful fall morning in Arkansas. About 55 degrees and drizzling rain.
I'd be happier in the woods (modern gun antlerless hunt started today) but I guess I'll live.

Puffing F&T Blackjack in my Kirsten Mariner. No topping, but a zesty flavor from the tobacco itself.

My B&M is Liberty Tobacco, here in San Diego. It’s a unique place – lots of guys sitting around smoking, mostly cigars. Talking, and watching sports on the TV screens. Drinking coffee from the store coffee pot (supported by contributions). A table for card players. Literature supporting conservative candidates, and advice about California ballot propositions.

Not too long ago, I was there when a big black guy, one of the regulars, entered. “Where are the white women?”, he demanded. That got a big laugh. Not only were no white women present, no women of any sort were present. As I said, it’s a unique place, especially nowadays.

I'm cutting firewood and stacking it in the wood shed today. Beautiful, sunny day so of course I've got my Missouri Meerschaum, General loaded up with Virginia flake for a few puffs every now and again when I could use a break. Peter Stokkebye provided the flake.

Now, time to relax a bit with Sweet Rum Twist in a gourd calabash and a glass of milkshake stout.

Law School? I'd say it's a good topic, but a little of the path most traveled.

Yep. Nearly midway through my 2nd year.
I go part time, so it'll take 4.

Puffing my second fill of Patriot Flake (Dan Tobacco) in my Kirsten. So glad that this delicious Virginia is back in my cellar, after a long absence.

Autumn Evening in an old banded Dr Grabow.
It even tastes good on an Autumn morning. Imagine that.

That's a really cool looking pipe!

Do you find it a different smoke in the stubby vs a "traditional" size pipe?

Smoked some Sutliff Crumble Kake English #1 in a Savinelli Trevi 320KS.
I really like it. It has a lot of tangy, sour oriental notes.
It will be on market in November. I might need to pick some up.

Please post pics of your new Savinelli. How was the Richmond Pipe Show? Did you do the Sutliff factory tour? I really wanted to make that one, but just couldn't swing it.

It's the closest one. A Savinelli Tundra Brownblast 315.

The tour was great! Also got to meet and chat with JimInks, Russ O, Karl MacAlister (SP?), and a few other members of other forums.
The pipe show was also great.

What? You mean that's not the extremely HTF, 5 Brothers flake? :D

Fixin to burn a few coins of Sweet Rum Twist in the gourd tonight.
My gourd is getting pretty gunked up inside. Anyone have any magic treatment to clean it out?
I was planning on bending a small bottle brush into a J and using Everclear as a solvent. Souns like a PIA tho...

No, that tobacco in the picture is from my last failed attempt to make a flake. No more trying to make a flake unless I decide to get a hydraulic press, and I don't know if I want to take it to that level.

Be careful using Everclear on that gourd - it might ruin it. I've not cleaned mine yet either, but it seems like it might damage it. I know it will ruin a Cherry wood pipe; dries it out so much it cracks and splits.

Well I considered just using rum too. That article mentions 'spirits' but doesn't go into any more detail.

What's wrong with that flake? It looks just like G&H Louisana Flake. Can't be all that bad.
If I ever decided to make flake I'd weld up some bolt-together contraption so I could clamp it up and then 'stove' (lol) it in the oven while it's under pressure. It's not something I plan on doing tho. There are so many wonderful flakes out there already that I can't see the point... that and I already have decent stockpiles of all my favorites so why re-invent the wheel? I don't even have the time to try the ones that are already out there.
