I've got a small, unlabeled mason with about half a bowls worth of dry-ish something or other that smells faintly of latakia. Looks to be a rubbed out flake of some kind - probably something I prepared too much of a while back and stuck in this jar for safe keeping. A little latakia goes good with Va usually so I rubbed out a flake of PS, Navy to add to it, making a probable total of two bowls worth of this mystery mix. I'll try some later in the bent sandblast.

Nice!
I don't care for Va in my calabash. It seems to mute the flavor too much, especially the citrus which I otherswise really enjoy. Usually I smoke stronger blends in it like Sweet Rum (or whiskey) twist and D&R Picayune as it really mellows those out nicely. G&H rum flake is quite nice in it too.
You need to smoke that sucker more! The meer is still white :pipe:

That makes perfect sense; the Virginia was sweet but muted. I will try what you suggest with my G&H twists. I would smoke it more, but it requires a commitment - of one hand for 30 or so minutes.

Finishing up some Ennerdale, in a tall skinny MM Cob, with my morning coffee. It's a good, quality tobacco. IMO the taste is better if you let it sit for a long time (I've probably had this sample a couple of years) for the floral soap taste to die down some. I've enjoyed it but don't see me buying any.

By the time I remembered the weed was crunchy dry and had been baking for probably 20 minutes :( Loaded it up anyway after a little rehydration but everything good in it had apparently been baked to oblivion because it was like smoking a weak aromatic (less the room note). ...well, it was a little better than a weak aromatic but not much. I managed to burn half a cobfull of G&H Rum Flake over the course of the day yesterday but that's the first smoke in over a week. I have had to lay off the pipe for the last few weeks, so haven't been visiting the forum. At the last pipe club meeting in March, my tongue got bit by some Bengal Slices that someone gave me that were too dry. It took more than two days for the tongue pain to go away, so I was concerned about it and went to the doctor a week later. Diagnosed with thrush, a fungal infection of the mouth; it feels like a bad case of bite. Anyhow, it is just now getting better. That's probably more than you needed to know, but what the heck.

My tin of Solani 633, Virginia with Perique, is nearly empty, so I opened a tin of Orlik Golden Sliced, to make an A-B comparison. The 633 (2 yo) and the OGS (5 yo) are both neatly cut rectangular flakes, predominantly Virginia, with a smattering of Perique.
But that’s about the end of their similarities. Tin notes are different (both pleasant). The 633 is significantly darker in color. For flavor, the OGS has a bit of citrus while the 633 tends towards savory. I like both about equally well, but I have to note that the OGS is significantly less expensive. If I were buying more, it would be the OGS. But I have a lot of stock on hand, so a decision isn’t imminent.
And more and more, I’m appreciating the excellence of Wessex Classic Virginia, a dark red ready-rubbed vaper that I discovered several months ago. Priced between the 633 and the OGS, it might beat out both of them.

There must be some burley in there somewhere because I taste something woody... but not quite cardboardy. A pipe club friend gave me almost a half pound of a mixture that he made but didn't like. It is a combination of two store blends: 50% English #2 and 50% Blackwell Mixture (mild aromatic, not goopy). So I'm smoking a bowl of this mixture in a Dr. Grabow Belvedere billiard that I got on Ebay a couple of days ago.

Feeling bored, I tried a blend: 50-50 Solani ABF, and F&T Blackjack. The latter is a bright, untopped Virginia. I cut both finely and mixed well.
It was a successful experiment — the ABF benefits from some brightening, and the Blackjack is better toned down.

1 Missouri Meerschaum corncob pipe
1 Tin of good English tobacco (I.e. Dunhill Nightcap for a cigar smoker)
1 pack of standard pipe cleaners
http://www.cigarbum.com/forum/general-pipe-discussion/pipe-101-a-5386.html
Total cost for the first 20 smokes: less than one FFOX cigar
Then if you like it at all, n00b sampler trade for pipes (either that or make a few posts about all the goopy bullshit aromatics you're trying and some piper will probably have mercy on you and send you a sampler of decent tobaccos right out of the blue)

In the last 12 hours, I've smoked four or five bowls of Condor in various pipes. Love this stuff. Mowing the yard with a push mower, 6/10ths of an acre. Had to come in and take a break and make some iced tea. One of my push mowers (the lighter one that I use for trim) wouldn't start after being stored through the winter. After wearing out my shoulder trying to start it, I put some enzyme stuff in the tank and pulled the rope 6 or 8 more times to get it into the carburetor and went and cut grass with the other mower. After about an hour, I tried the other mower and it started right up!

This batch is better than the last. Aging doesn't help unless you age it in a semi-sealed condition, i.e. in a mason jar with the lid disk upside down. Need to keep an eye on the moisture tho, you don't want it to get too dry.

Well yes, it doesn't totally go away but usually it fades to the point where it's at least tolerable. Mine gives a whiff of baby powder at first but seems it's pretty well gone (or you're numb to it) by the time the first 1/4 of the bowl is gone.

Invest in? I don't think you can classify a tin of tobacco as an investment any more than a beer or a candy bar. However, from the descriptions of that blend and the long, coiled belt presentation I might just grab a couple tins myself soon. The only thing that makes me want to shy away (other than the price) is the white burley it supposedly contains. I usually hate burley in my Virginia. Also want to try F&T Blackjack that Pipe Smoker recommended.

I've never heard that hotter water equates to more caffeine. At one time I had some Yerba Mate "tea" from South America that has a higher caffeine content than regular black tea. I grew up in a small town in Missouri. There were three drugstores, each with a soda fountain. Everybody ordered cokes — plain, vanilla, lemon, cherry, or chocolate. After my junior year of college I had a summer job as an engineering intern at Detroit Edison in Detroit. At the soda fountains there everyone ordered Vernor’s. And most put cream in it. Surprised, I was, but found it was pretty good that way.
Long before that, as a kid at home, I put some cream into a coke. It curdled! Dunno why it doesn’t curdle in Vernor’s.

My tin of Dunhill Navy Rolls went empty yesterday, so I opened a 3yo tin of F&T Special Brown Flake — puffing that now. Two neat side-by-side stacks of rectangular flakes. Said to be rum-flavored. Probably true, but I wouldn’t have guessed rum if I hadn’t known. In any case it’s a very tasty tobacco.

I gotta say that I like oaky Chardonnay...
Well actually, with this McC 2015, the un-oaked goes better with the top half of the bowl as it's decidedly more fruity than the oak aged. After about the halfway point the blend loses its fruity tartness and begins to develop an almost buttery flavor that goes great with a traditional chardonnay. Gotta love that; a bowlful of tobacco that forces you to drink 2 glasses of wine :p :p :drunk: Things could be worse :)

Puffing F&T Special Brown Flake in my Kirsten Mariner. Sad to say that the 3 yo tin is nearly empty. With some flavored tobaccos the flavoring becomes tiresome near the end of the tin — not so with SBF. The rum flavoring (which tastes like butterscotch to me) isn’t overbearing. And the tobacco itself is excellent.

I'd be interested to see what you think of Rattray's Red Raparee. It's more of a Scottish blend IMO; a mild English with a touch of 'unflavored' black cavendish to boost the sweetness a bit. 'Unflavored' but I pick up a light touch of vanilla from time to time. It's really a nice blend.

I’m not an aromatic guy at all. But I’ve been impressed with the quality of Solani tobaccos, and the blending skill of Herr Will. So a year or two ago I bought a tin of Solani 639, Tropical Mango Flake. Black Cavendish, Virginia, and Burley.
This stuff turned out to be INTENSELY aromatic. Too much for me — after smoking half a bowl I dumped my pipe and threw the tin away. But later, I began to regret my haste when it occurred to me that a blend of straight Virginia and the TMF might be interesting.
So recently I bought another tin of TMF. I’m now puffing a mixture of 76% Dunhill Flake, 24% TMF. And it’s pretty good — still strongly aromatic, I’ll reduce the TMF component to 20% next time. This blend is a major league change up for me. I put the rest of the TMF into a jar, as I won’t be smoking it at any great rate.
