We might start seeing some birds in a few days. Been a few grackles and starlings about. A hardy flock that! No grassy areas yet at all and the ground is still frozen solid, so until that happens, possibly by next week, no robins or similar. Robins follow the melt line and can "get out of town" south when they've gone too far north and it turns cold. (At least that's what I read somewhere...)
Got me yet another cob of RY going this morning, my second actually -- in the same pipe, a Legend Forever. BEAUTIFUL out there! I think it's above freezing!!

Good Morning Jim,
We get a lot of birds here, it's a migration stopover point (you can't cut down trees willy nilly) called Audubon Woods and I'm finally going to listen to their superior common sense. I cleared 100 feet of woods in my backyard (had to get a permit) and in the early Fall we now get a few days when tens of thousands of starlings suddenly appear in the cleared area to feed and just as suddenly they leave. The entire lawn (~8000 sq feet) turns black and it's like living Hitchcock's The Birds. They don't feed on the smaller front lawn nor would they all fit.

My old neighbor, John (who is now 77) just stopped by for an hour and we caught up. Interesting man who we're fond of. I chose this small bowled pipe as a toast to John and to you Jim, just because. John told me this ditty.
Eoin O'Brien went to his doctor.
"What's the problem Eoin?"
"Doctor, I can't pee!"
"Eoin, how old are you?"
"97"
The doctor looked at Eoin thoughtfully then placed his had reassuringly on the old man's shoulder.
"Eoin, you've pee'd enough."
Exactly! I've had cold Winter enough.

I'm smoking up the Troost because I'm near the finish of this pouch. I actually think the Match is better, and I recently got a tin of the Slices, so I'm thinking about trying them soon. Nah, no baseball predictions. I see more variables with so many teams this year that it's hard to figure what's going to happen.

Hi Brandon,
I'm OK and it's not a problem (really) but for the first time in my life I dropped a pipe and broke it (tenon). I'm shaking like a leaf. Man, this was upsetting.
I'm just getting acquainted with Glengarry. It's very much like GH Bright CR Flake but with a melon top sauce. I think that both are considered to be Lakeland mixtures but they shouldn't be confused with Ennerdale, much lighter and barely present in CR. The melon scent pokes through in the smoke as an unnatural sweetness so I prefer the CR. Typical of GH, good leaf, expert processing, good tobacco with a clear intent in manufacturing.

I'm always surprised to hear mispronunciations in high rent commercials. An add for a TV show says that the star is "mischeevius" rather than mischievous Professional announcers seem to have a real difficulty with enunciation. Zales wants to sell you diamond "assessories" instead of accessories. A current car insurance commercial and baby diaper commercial get the juncture completely bollixed so that I, a native speaker of English, am somewhat confused about what they really intended. "Cute diapers" has an inflection that makes me wonder if the label is "Cute" diapers, ie, one of the many possible types of diapers they sell, or whether it's "cute diapers". (The sort of mistake one expects from a non native speaker of English. The sort of mistake spies make.) The insurance commercial leaves me wondering whether I save $400 by switching over from Hartford or whether the insurance is from Hartford via AARP, the sort of mistake that would have cost me 5 points on an in-class discussion question in high school English.
Must be the warm weather. I'm always grumpy when I come out of hibernation. Smoking yet more RY in the 4Dot, too lazy to reach for anything else.

Sorry to hear that Pete!
Nothing worse than breaking a treasure. Better find one to replace it quickly!
I figured Glengarry was of a much lighter variety. Sounds like it could be a decent smoke. When it comes to lakeland snot, I am a fan of the stronger varieties. Smoking a lot Grasmere lately. I'd say it is in between Ennerdale and Kendal flake. A tasty and quality smoke indeed.

Bummer, Pete!
I remember Glengarry Flake having a pronounced honey flavoring. Not as strong as a lot of GH&Co flakes, but not bad. Definitely not the perfumed variety of Lakelands, though.
Oh, and Pete, I believe they call the old guy's problem "having the drip" in the UK, judging from a funny conversation on another forum. "Aye, the drrrip, laddy." 1470

Hi Jim,
I'm not yet dripping, but I will be a-tripping south (I need reinforcement :) ).
You're correct about the Glengarry. I get the honey in the smoke more than the bag. I can taste 1792 for weeks but Glengarry's just a wisp in the next smoke.
I was an eleven year old kid with a couple of months under my belt, trying to make good working in a pipe shop, when someone dropped and broke a pipe and the boss went nuts. I'm OK and I need to adjust to my hands.

Pete, quite an interesting story...and I'm sorry this happened.
However...and pardon my extremity for just a moment: Just shy of 50 years, what a great accomplishment! Sounds to me that you have something to be quite thankful for; that you made it this long without any dropped and broken pipes. Some folks don't even get to live 50 years. Chew on that... :pipe:

Tommy,
Thanks for your kindness.
As this pipe (Barling Londoner Pot) was heading for the floor I saw that scene from 50 years ago with clarity. I just finished smoking the only other pipe that I ever broke (I've had to break pipes intentionally) and it's fixed, sublime and though I wasn't happy that it needed repair it meant nothing.
Odd how a promise that a child makes to themselves can affect the man so many years later. I'm good.

Finding myself out of FVF, I turned to a several year old can of Best Brown Flake. To tell you the truth, I can't tell them apart. A couple of bowls, one in the large Ser Jacopo bent billiard and another in the medium TwoDot apple, both very nice. The flakes needed a little drying, but they were very good anyhow, and I thoroughly enjoyed a nice straight Virginia for a change. Just finished watching the skating world championships for the day. @JustTroItIn (http://www.cigarbum.com/forum/member.php?u=12), what are you taking the pics with?
Hi Jack and George.
Thanks for your replies and assistance. I use a Canon digi and upload pics through a media reader to a desktop PC and my Chrome (Google) account. In the past I was able to cut/paste to start a thread and sometimes I into a post (there was a difference). Getting the pics from Chromebook was nigh impossible.
I was uploading pics with the Forum utility that makes a thumbnail but it started by limiting me to three pics, the two and now nothing, just an exclamation point. When I try to cut and paste it just sjips a space and nothing either. It's embarrassing to admit that I made my living as a programmer.
You guys take better pics than I do anyway but it's been frustrating.

My penultimate bowl of Escudo Navy De Luxe. I doubt I'll buy it again, as I like Stokkebye's Luxury Bullseye Flake better, and frankly as VaPers go, Hearth & Home Anniversary Kake really knocks my socks off. I still have a large jar of Sutliff's Elizabethan match too, so I see no good reason to throw down so much money for such a measly portion of Escudo.

Barling 251 is my favorite shape and I call them The Machine. This is the best of the three that I have but I haven't smoked it in over ten years since I noticed a tiny hairline crack on the top of the bowl. The crack hasn't gotten any worse so it's time to use it. Feels wonderful in the mouth. This all started when Branzig shamed me into a review of GH Mixture #12 (forthcoming) and I wanted to use a wider spectrum of pipes for the task. Thanks Brandon.

Great! I have always smoked VaPers in it, and I noticed long ago that they seemed a little smoother and sweeter in this pipe. About two years ago, I decided this would be a Louisiana Red or Virginia Spice pipe, depending on which was open at the time. The only regret is that the bowl is wide enough to drop most coin cuts in without bending or folding them, so it's perfect for that. I believe it was made in the 1960s, but I can't prove it. Paid $50 for it in 2001 and sure have gotten my money's worth.

Hi Craig,
8 Flakes! You might be a granddad by the time that you're finished with that bowl :).
I just tried this flake for the first time recently. Interesting twist in the flake that makes for some variation in packing.
Luxury Twist is described (P&C) as having a mild essence that I smelled and tasted (maple) . You're right that it's not an aromatic and it's sweeter than other Stokkebye flakes like Luxury Navy and Bull's-Eye and it's well made like they are. A nice tobacco without sticker shock.

Hi Bryan,
I'm so old school that we reviewed tobaccos as UGH :( or Ugh :). Facial expression helped but not only was there no Internet, we'd yet to discover the sonic value of seashells. This is why I shouldn't review tobaccos but I did an impromptu review of Peter Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake and the gist of my comments was that it was well made but ugh :/. I've changed my opinion of that tobacco as well as the other PS flakes.
The three Peter Stokkebye flakes that I've tried are Luxury Navy, Bulls Eye and Luxury Twist. I now have a few pounds of the first two and a few ounces of the Twist. All are well made. All are well behaved and consistent smokes. They're subtle, smooth and burn well. Not big flavor and lots of nuance but tasty and a an excellent deviation from more aggressive fare. All are very good values and you can buy them for under $2.00/oz and that makes them solid values. Pipes & Cigars is the cheapest but it appears that they're repackaging bulk so there will be broken flakes (not a problem for me) while 4Noggins was more expensive but less broken on arrival.
When I was new school, I liked to hunt with a bowl and my sabre tooth comrade, Blurg, and these type of flakes were very popular. This Stokkebye trio are worthy successors to those tobaccos that people now pay small fortunes for little tins. I have no idea how it ages. Ugh :).

Hi George,
Tobacco leaf has changed and I lament some fabulous leaf that's no longer available just as I do the extinction of the saw-billed sea slug (they were so delicious!). Ugh! :)
Tobacco reviews are better today than they've been in the past, detailing flavors and nuance in far more detail. I do get a kick out of the third reporting (first third smoked this way, second etc.) because those changes should be subtle and gradual but if those changes are as dramatic as often claimed then it suggests fault in product or smoker but overall the reviews are better and more useful and vivid.
Thanks for the kind words but I feel that @JimInks (http://www.cigarbum.com/forum/member.php?u=180) writes excellent and, perhaps most importantly, consistent reviews. Some flavors and scents can be difficult to isolate but a consistent reviewer creates a standard that may have differences from your own perception but that can be a good guideline.
@Branzig (http://www.cigarbum.com/forum/member.php?u=149) humiliated me into doing a review of Mixture #12 and I will keep my word on it. I'll try to uphold your faith in me George but I can't take too much time to write that review because I'm looking for something to eat now that there are no more saw-billed sea slugs. ugh :(

Hi Jim,
Have you written a review of either (I think that there are only two) of the Villiger tin mixtures? If not, please let us know what you think of this one.
Pete
The Tilshead swallowed a lot of the CR Flake but it lasted well over 2 hours. of a beautiful smoke. For anyone that would like a great briar, well crafted (but an ordinary stems), look at a Tilshead. They get some respect on eBay but they still sell for a fraction of the price of a James Upshall and they're the same pipe except for small flaws. For many years Upshall made only smooths and those bowls with superficial flaws became Tilsheads (name of the town where the workshop was located). They run large but smaller ones are around too. A true handmade second that were and still remain superb value. If anyone is interested I'll happily elaborate or answer questions about them.
