Starting the new year in style! Just opened a tin of Dunhill DLNR with 5+ years of age on it. And yes, it has "De Luxe Navy Rolls" on the tin label, rather than just "Navy Rolls". This stuff is regal tobacco.
Happy New Year everyone!

Try some of the McClelland Grand Orientals. Very nice IMO and a nice change of pace. Sometimes I get tired of latakia and want something that doesn't contain it but still has lots of good flavor and no burley. This Warhorse Bar supposedly contains burley but I don't taste it - at least not that carfboardy flavor I detest. Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky and MacBaren Old Dark Fired are good too. This is just some 'what I like' offered FYI in case you're looking for a little variety.

This doesn't count as "today" but I'm just getting around to signing back in.
Had a bowl of Tewksberry Celtic Blend and another of C&D Pirate Kake with my pipe-smoking and hunting buddy while we were carrying guns around in the woods the other day.
I always bring two pipes in my portable pipe satchel and I'm glad I did - and I learned a lesson. Don't bring meers out in the cold! I knew that but had a brain cramp that day (I also forgot my blaze orange as well, so I was prepared to defend myself on religious grounds should I encounter a ranger). Anyway the bowl just broke right off of it. Fortunately it was one of those cheap, pressed mini-meers so no great loss.

Oh no! Where is the 'don't like' button?!?
I almost always carry cobs as pocket pipes while hunting. It's hard to find a pipe that will stand up to more abuse than a corn cob.

Smoking C&D Billy Budd in a cheap little Baraccini stack poker (they call it a poker anyway, looks like a cherrywood to me). This is not a blend I would normally smoke as I don't care for burley or cigar leaf but I was looking for a change of pace and this fit the bill nicely. The latakia is very nice; smoky of course but with a lot of subtle spice and even hints of rosemary/evergreen. There's a subtle sweetness that appears once in a while then disappears completely. It's rather creamy which I (perhaps incorrectly) attribute to the cigar leaf. It's also a bit peppery which must also be the work of the cigar leaf because according to TR, there's no perique in it. No cardboard burley flavor at all... in fact I don't notice any burley although TR says it's in there. I notice it scorches easier than most on relights so the flame has to be applied lightly.

I smoked my new Ropp squat bulldog for the first time today, using Wessex Classic Virginia for the break-in tobacco (5 fills). Not great, but not too bad either — thankfully, there was no noxious coating in the chamber
I bought this little pipe from SmokingPipes:
Ropp Vintage Stout Smooth Squat Bulldog | Buy Ropp Tobacco Pipes at Smokingpipes (http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/Ropp/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=247313)
I was attracted to it because the squat bulldog is my favorite pipe shape. Lots of character, and I like pipes with broad, shallow bowls — I prefer the taste of smoke from tobacco that hasn’t filtered too much smoke.
This $72 pipe is undoubtedly machine made, rather than hand made. But I don’t care, because it’s well made. E. g., the shank and bit join together with no discernible discontinuity. The grain isn’t going to knock your socks off — kind of mottled, rather than bold streaks. But the mottling is uniform over the whole surface, and looks rather nice, in hand. At least, after I improved the luster of the finish by applying a thin coat of EVOO. And this modest little pipe has some nice features:
1. Horn bit. I didn’t know that pipes with horn bits were still available — I’d never seen any until I noticed that some Ropp pipes were offered with horn bits.
2. Delrin tenon. The best tenon material IMO — tough, elastic, and has a low coefficient of friction.

Re: “I love the red cake, too bad it’s no longer out there.”
From Tobacco reviews:
“When it comes to straight red Virginia that's meant to be smoked instead of blended, there's not a lot of competition - for me it came down to McClelland's 5100 or Wessex Brigade Classic Virginia, and Wessex won.
It's ready-rubbed, easy to maintain, cool smoking, and less sweet. Rich, deep, complex, earthy flavors all the way through, it makes me want to bake bread.”
Wessex - Classic Virginia (Brigade) - Tobacco Reviews (http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/1274/wessex-classic-virginia)
I always have some of the Wessex Classic Virginia (actually a vaper), on hand.

I had such a sore throat last winter I gargled (and swallowed) a teaspoon of Tabasco sauce for some relief. It works too: burns like heck but then as the burn fades, so does the sore throat. The relief lasts about an hour.
Speaking of burning, I'm burning a fill of Sweet Rum Twist in a new Stanwell Rhodesian. Wanted something strong to disguise the nasty flavor of a new pipe but so far this one isn't too bad. Just tastes like SRT for the most part.
-edit-
also burned a fill of D&R Picayune in the gourd calabash. Wanted a little pepper. Got pepper in spades.

I've recently discovered a new-to-me mushroom: the maitake, AKA hen of the woods. It's the most delicious mushroom that I've ever had, with the possible exception of morels. Any tobacco burns my tongue if I don't smoke it carefully - especially Va and VaPers. I usually stash them away for a year at least before I even try them. That seems to help a lot. I guess I wouldn't know fresh as I've never tried it that way. After a year or so it doesn't seem to bite any more than anything else.
One blend that bites me fresh is PS navy flake, I know that for sure. It also tastes... sharp -for lack of a better word. Only a year does wonders for that blend.
edit...
I may have misspoke. It might be the Louisiana Red I like. I'll need to go check my stash and see which one I have. Been on a rope and twist kick lately. Haven't been hitting the VaPers much at all.

Puffing mild and tasty Hamborger Veermaster in my Kirsten Mariner. This Virginia is just good.
BTW -- I've always sautéed mushrooms in EVOO and/or herbed butter. But it occurred to me that tahini might be good with mushrooms, so yesterday I tried that.
5-1/4 oz of Hen of the Woods (AKA maitakes) mushrooms in EVOO and 1/2 oz tahini (which has a fair amount of oil). It was good! I'll do this again.

G&H Sweet Whiskey Twist in a gourd calabash along with Rochester Mills Red Velvet Ale.
This pairing is a match made in heaven if ever there was one :) The beer is very sweet and positively reeks of vanilla creme. It's a dessert beer if ever there was one and it pairs beautifully with this tobacco. I equate it to a fine cigar with root beer on the side... which I also enjoy very much from time to time.

Tonight I smoked:

*C&D Shandygaff > I enjoyed this blend; it was stronger than I expected in terms of nicotine.
*G&H Sweet Coconut Twist > always satisfying.

I see LBF mentioned a couple times lately. Haven't had that in ages... sounds good. I need to dig that out again. I have a sizable stash of it somewhere and I bet it has 2 or 3 years of age on it by now. I ordered 8oz from (I think) P&C many moons ago. Lo and behold, a full brick of the stuff arrived - something like 1.5 lbs. I notified them of the mistake before opening the pack but they said to just keep it :) so I have at least 2 qt mason jars crammed full of the stuff.

This tobacco is full flavored and has a unique flavor profile. I have found that Dunhill's "Nightcap" and "Artisan's Blend" are very similar but Nightcap's flavors seem to flow over each other whereas Artisan's Blend are very distinct so that you can taste the individual flavor inputs. I have about 7 or 8 tins in storage but I am concerned about Ashton's being able to continue making this same tobacco because they use Syrian Latakia and I do not think that Syria has been exporting their Latakia in several years because of political unrest.:mope: I am topping off this smoke with two small glasses of brandy and I am feeling very relaxed.:couch:

Earlier today I opened a tin of Fribourg & Treyer Special Brown Flake, nearly 3 yo. Now enjoying my second fill. This mild Virginia is said to be flavored with rum. It certainly has a savory topping, but I’d’ve never guessed rum, if I hadn’t read of it.
Like every F&T flake offering that I know of, there are two neat rectangular stacks with no buckling or overlap (unlike DF). And the flakes separate easily (unlike Hamborger Veermaster). Despite the easy separation, it’s difficult to extract an intact flake — these are the most fragile flakes that I know of.
I’m certainly enjoying this stuff — I like savory!

Had a bowl of Sam Gawith Chocolate Flake in a Barling Canadian last night. I haven't visited this blend for a long time but it's such a nice tasting tobacco. Unfortunately, it burned very wet last night. I had to dump the charge out and let it dry out again before transferring it to a smaller, dry pipe. I know that's about as unorthodox as it gets but I hate throwing away good tobacco and I still had half a beer left that needed a companion.
Today I'm planning on putting up a ceiling fan. I'll load up a bowl of McClelland 2015 to puff on once in a while as I work. This isn't really a yard gar type of pipe tobacco as it's just so good but life's too short and unpredictable to smoke crap tobacco.

I have found the optimum moisture content for smoking this blend, which is just to the point of not clumping, but not to the point of crumbling or breaking up into smaller pieces. If you've ever handled a 3.5 oz. brick of Semois, then this is a little bit more moist than some Semois blend right out of the bag.

Well... I don't know. If you like aromatics maybe. It's a typical Cavendish blend; sweet, thin tasting, good smelling, no nicotine or tobacco flavor whatsoever... The topping is nice I guess. I'm just not too much into aros. I picked it for a walk in the woods with my daughter... wanted something nice smelling. It certainly fit the bill for that.

I was taught how to do it back in the mid-nineties but haven't done it since. Don't you immerse the stem (to the point where you want to bend it) in boiling-hot water and then pull it out and bend it gently?

You might try Fribourg & Treyer Vintage. A Virginia with lots of flavor and a pleasant room note. I’ve had many compliments from non smokers.
Edit: I used to smoke Vintage in the beer garden of Kaiserhof, my favorite San Diego restaurant. That’s where I got the compliments. Then a customer complained about the smell of somebody’s cigar, so the owner banned cigars AND PIPES! Not fair!

I couldn't get it to work with water. I used a heat gun on low heat and yes, cram a bunch of pipe cleaners down the stem to make sure it doesn't collapse whem you bend it.

I'll have to add a tin on an order sometime.
They probably have to ban pipes along with cigarettes and cigars. Otherwise some jackass would just show up with a bowl of Nightcap or D&R Picayune which smells at least as bad as a cigarette, if not worse.

I put “stone” in quotes because it’s actually a slab of stainless steel, 11-1/2” x 2-1/2” x 3/8”, with 325 diamond grit on one 11-1/2” x 2-1/2” surface.

My upper limit is 1 bowl per day, with the occasional 2 bowls per day on hunting trips etc. or my tongue hates me.
I usually aim for an average of 2 or 3 bowls per week; some weeks I'll have a bowl most evenings and then there are weeks I don't smoke at all. Never could endure more than a couple bowls in a day tho without regretting it, and even then not 1 day after the other... although during hunting trips I do it anyway :p :p

Fyi, you can fry it just fine but it likes to fall apart if you're not careful. It's quite tasty fried. Browning it up on both sides in a little bacon grease makes it a little more durable. Fry some, then mix it in with some cube cut hash brown potatoes and chop up an over medium egg into the mix and it tastes just like hash and eggs

I just did something that I rarely do: opened two 50g tins of tobacco. Both Fribourg & Treyer: Vintage and Blackjack.
Vintage is a mild Virginia flake with a prominent topping — sometimes too prominent.
Blackjack is a finely cut ready rubbed Virginia. No topping at all, and zippy — sometimes too zippy.
I figured that a 50/50 blend of these two would be good. And, by George, I was right! Oddly, the blend doesn’t taste like something halfway between the two components, but like an entirely different (and excellent) tobacco. I put both tobaccos into a jar to retain moistness,, as it’ll take me awhile to go though 100g.

Lol. The seller had the listing titled "Savinelli Napa leather tobacco pouch" and had the pouches in the photo. That's how they sneaked it past Ebay's rules of not selling tobacco. But I see others selling tins regularly on Ebay, despite their latest rule which forbids it.
