Gekkikan is cheap sake and my choice for cleaning between smokes but sometimes, cuz sake's so good, I sample it to make sure it hasn't turned into vinegar. :)
@EmperorZurg and @BrySCGuy, glad you're getting use out of those pipes and I owe you, haven't forgotten but need to let the personal paralysis ease, haven't sent anything to anyone in well over a year.

Hi Bryan,
Not a stress but I remember as well as your collective kindness before and during that I'll not forget. There are some special people on this forum, some I haven't seen yet (since I returned) and I hope that they are still active here.
The Diet Ginger Ale was a different class of soft drink altogether. When I'm ready to resume blending I hope to fill the tracking book with the excellent pen, both given by a friend.
This morning;
2014 Gawith Hoggarth Louisiana Flake in a 1984 Ser Jacopo Gemma Granato taper squat billiard with an inscribed silver and gold band. Very bad-ass pipe. Can't believe that it's over 33 years old but I guess that means that I now have deep history. My just married daughter was 4 months old when I was given this pipe. Wow.

The other day I tried some Russ' Monthly Blend Snow Drift for the first time. I didn't move me, which surprised me, as Russ' blends are usually pretty good. It tasted a bit bland and wet, so I left the jar open for a couple days to dry it out, and had another bowl this p.m. Tasted better, but it lost even more of its flavor. My next trick will be adding bacon bits (latakia) to it. This usually rescues a struggling aro :)
BTW, y'all might be interested in a video I'm watching on blending:

It's been many months since I've picked up a pipe. Tonight I had the house to myself for several hours and decided to make myself a strong cup of Twining's Irish breakfast tea and relax on the deck for a while, but as I waited for my tea to cool I sensed something missing, a pipe. So I went to my room and chose an old friend from the rack, a John Bessai Special X squashed tomato and a tin of Dunhill "Ye Olde Signe". It was the perfect match for the tea. A very relaxing 40 minutes. I should spend more time with old friends.

the room note from my pipes (mostly). So tonight I'm puffing away
and I stuck my mug right under hers reading what she had up on the
laptop.Well,she gives out a little cough and a gag,so I pulled back
and said to her,"I thought you liked this blend?"She said,"I do but
not right under my face where I'm getting the full cloud".
I told her yer not supposed to inhale........Got kicked,,,,again :(

For those who do not know, Tony is the one who got me started on the piping road a couple years ago in the Newbie Sampler Trade. Two and a half years later, I am enjoying the pipe more than ever, thanks to Tony. Several of the blends he introduced me to are in my regular rotation now.

I did something tonight that I never do, smoked the same pipe with the same tobacco as the night before. Now, I own a lot of pipes, and I've smoked a lot of pipes that I no longer own. Some of them were cheap machine made pipes turned out by the hundreds, some were fine handcrafted examples of the best of the pipe maker's art. None of them, however, have given me the pleasures that I experience with this one. John Bessai's pipes are notoriously difficult to date but indications are that this one was crafted in the late thirties when the storm clouds of war were gathering over Europe. He worked alone in his shop in Cleveland, carving pipes between customers. Most of them were marked simply with his name on the shank and his initials on the stem. Some that he was particularly pleased with would bear the the mark "Special", and the best of those would be "Special X." I am lucky enough to own a Special X. It's not a physically attractive pipe and has noticeable fills and when smoking it I often wonder what he knew that I don't. I wonder if, as he turned the finished pipe over in his hands, he ever thought that here is a pipe someone will still be enjoying 80 years from now. I wish I could tell him of the pleasure his pipe has given me.

I haven’t popped any tins in a really long time b/c I had so much in jars. I’m going to go look up the tin you sent me in that trade. It’s been aging since I got it - I’ll send you half and we can smoke it together.

I would bring him a few tobacco samples if he's up for it but I'd let him flounder along with the cheap pipe his wife got him unless or until he starts bitching about how it smokes. If he's serious about pipe smoking, he'll start asking questions if he can't get it right. If he's not serious about it, he'll give up soon anyway and toss the pipe in a drawer even if it's a Dunhill. I make it a habit not to offer my help to relative strangers unless they ask for it.

Hi Matt,
You and @Emperorzurg seem to have sussed it out. Rather than give him a pipe perhaps let him know that if he enjoys his pipe then he might really enjoy a better pipe.
This way you don't need to slap him twice if he puts your pipe in a drawer. :)
I'm supposed to vacuum the McClelland VA flakes from P&C that someone kindly alerted regarding their excellent sale last month but I keep making excuses (to myself) about needing to sample more before I store it. Same old inner-dialogue. Much easier to bag and forget the ones that don't taste good.

A pipe isn't a smoking accessory to a hipster, it's a fashion accessory. He's playing dressup. Chances are your boy there doesn't want to smoke a pipe, he just wants the 'pipe look'. Maybe you should get him a new chrome axe so he can occasionally dress up as a lumbersexual.

I do enjoy the flavor of it. It is something I have to be in the mood for though.
Most of the time when you hear of a tobacco that is super strong, it is mostly hyperbole, but Brown Bogie lives up to the reputation. It is certainly full/strong in every sense of the word. I find it is one of the few pipe tobaccos that stands up good to a glass of Scotch or Bourbon.

Trying to bring myself to smoke a freebie, Acid Blonde. Nothing I would have ever bought but I got a free 5er with another order... something tells me they need more rest. Way more rest...
---edit---
Well I did it... talked myself into trying one 'fresh'. Mini 'review' to follow...
Acid Blondie Belicoso
The first half would have made for a decent, albeit very mild, smoke were it not for the sickening sweet goop they slopped on the tip. Figured I'd just take a blade and cut the tip off but the goop goes down for at least a good 1 1/2" if not more. (If I don't just give these things away, I'll try smoking the next one backwards as there didn't seem to be any sweet goop on the foot) Other than that, the artificial flavoring (though not appreciated) wasn't overdone although I doubt the actual leaf would have had any flavor at all without it. This cigar actually seemed to have a pleasant room note from what I could notice while smoking it. From about the halfway point on, the thing got progressively more nasty as I went along. The reviews I read mention 'sandalwood'. Well if that's what I'm tasting, suffice to say I don't like sandalwood; I think it would be best left for making sandals as my feet lack the ability to taste and smell. I think I'll go cleanse my palate with a small bowl of Sweet Rum Twist.

Just popped open a tin of Capstan Medium (blue tin label) with 3+ years of age on it. I was going to stop ordering this stuff, simply because I have other straight Virginia flakes that I like -- would simplify my inventory. But this stuff is going down so nicely that I might have to reconsider. IMO, Capstan Medium is the best tobacco that Mac Baren ever made.

Yesterday I slowly incinerated a bit of old leaf I've had lying around. First, I had a bowl of Erinmore flake in a cob. The tin is years old and I don't really care for the blend but it was fairly dry and I didn't have time to dry out anything else. Then, at the campfire, I remembered a cigar tube containing a few bone dry coins of G&H Black Cherry Twist that have been rattling around in my glove box like a pouch of Mixture 79 for close to 2 years. Those went into the cob and met their demise with little fanfare or flavor. Surprisingly, there was still the same hint of cherry flavor this blend always has but little in the way of anything else.

Puffing F&T Special Brown Flake from a just-opened tin with 2+ years of age on it. This is an interesting tobacco. SmokingPipes says that it's rum flavored. It certainly generates tasty smoke, but I doubt that I'd've guessed rum if I hadn't read the blurb.
The flakes are very neatly stacked in the tin, but they've the most fragile flakes I've ever seen. That's in contrast to Solani ABF flakes, which are durable enough for light construction.

This tobacco was still moist after all this time. After lighting it, I found that it was a very sweet aromatic, flavorful, ran hot and was not to my liking; after smoking half a bowl I dumped it out. I am now having a bowl of SG FVF in my Savinelli 606EX and am enjoying it.:santa: I am topping off this smoke with a small glass of brandy and the train is "back on the track".

There's none of that cardboard burly taste and it doesn't bite so that part I enjoy, however there's no citrus to speak of either and I don't taste the alleged anise topping at all. First time trying Smokers pride mellow, which is not bad at all for 7.99 a pound on special. pretty OTC flavor profile but with much more bright virginia (more than any OTC I can think of). low nicotine which is nice as these days I do not maintain a high nicotine tolerance at all. I smoked it in a briar and suspect it would be better in a cob. Very cheap long term tobacco security, I now have 3 pounds of the rich taste and 3 of the mellow taste.

Ha! King Oscar are the ones I had too. Nice and firm and not too fishy smelling (tho the cat goes nuts when I crack a tin). I had the Mediterranean seasoned sardines in olive oil. I doused them with Tabasco and ate them from the tin. I also like them over a layer of cream cheese on a big slice of dark rye, also smothered in Tabasco... or, to shake things up, sometimes I'll whip up a couple tablespoons of hot Chinese mustard and cut the Tabasco back to just a drop here and there for flavor.
Going to dry out a serving of PS Navy Flake. Great blend once it ages a bit. Not so great fresh imo...

Looking at several of my tin tobaccos I realize that I need to re-hydrate several more. I don't have this problem with my jarred tobaccos that I transfer to my plastic baggies, but the tins do have a tendency to dry out. I topped off this smoke with an ice cold mug of "Guinness Draught" brew and I am enjoying this evening.:beerchug:

I like it, and reselling it wouldn't be very lucrative. It's different than a lot of VaPers, especially if you are used to stuff like stokkebye, mcclelland, escudo, navy rolls, etc. This is just ribbon cut VA and perique, dry, no casings or toppings. the VA isn't as sweet as any of the aforementioned. This one smokes very good, doesn't gurgle and passes a pipe cleaner. When I got it on Ebay, it looked like it had been stored in someone's toolbox and was pretty beat-up. I sent it to Bobby Owens in Norman Park, Georgia and he restored it for me for free. I had purchased a pipe from him on Ebay earlier and he had a note in the box that he repaired and restored pipes and that he would restore the first pipe for free. I have used him for numerous repair jobs since then and am always happy with the work he does.

BTW – Many folks think that Herr Will attempted to clone the legendary Balkan Sobranie 759 when he created Solani 779. Besides the similar name, the original tin was similar too. I've never smoked that Sobranie, so don't have an opinion on the matter. But if anyone could succeed at that effort, it would be Herr Will.

Thanks Tab,
1962 EC. Group 4 Bruyere. For those who aren't familiar with Dunhill nomenclature, little '2' is added to 1960 for the year, 4 in circle is the group, "A" is Bruyere.
I used to know what "EC" actually stood for but it was used on pipes with longer shanks than normally found in their groups range (and thus more desirable). The bowl was made with a single chuck replicator that Dunhill did better than anyone (similar to 1930s Sasieni). Don't know the names of the craftsmen who did the single chucks but these guys could orient the block (in the chuck) to bring out the most grain and best part of the wood. I assume that Frank Lincoln and Ken Lowe did some of these and perhaps Bernie Knighton too but Bill Taylor was probably too young to have done much with the single chucks.
Bit work is periodic, flatter bite with somewhat less refined button. Excellent shoulder as noted before. While technically a machine made bowl, the single chucks were the best machined bowls I've encountered. Since the blocks were initially phrased in the cutting mills many single chucks feature cross grains on the outer and inner spines (front/back of the bowls and up the top and bottom of the shank. How does it smoke?

Trying drug store blends I got on sale
Velvet in my bench made pipe- not too bad
Lane limited ready rubbed in my stanwell billiard- tasty
Carter hall in my baraccini Rhodesian- great smell, underwhelming taste
All in all, I got a couple of good tobaccos here that I won’t mind smoking often. The yard gars of the pipe world

I started the day with Dunhill Flake. Now it's Hamborger Veermaster. Both in my Luciano squat bulldog. I have to say that the HV tops the DF. The HV is mild, and just plain tasty.

Today I thought I would start off with a nice English blend. Not wanting a heavy
lat to encumber my taste buds,I chose Pipes&Wilke #524. An Aro-English.
I'm guessing that with the colder weather, windows being sealed and pumping
humidity into the air to aid with heating. The room note was somewhat harsher
than I figured on.I got in a bit of trouble and had to switch to more acceptable
blends for the remainder of my day.
So a couple bowls of LL Dark Red in my new Stanwell pipes followed by
three bowls of PS Lux Navy Flake in my Dunhill canted dublin.
