Had a bowl of G&H, Rum Flake last night in a short Baraccini 'old Shenandoah' stack poker.

FWIW, I figured out how to smoke this pipe (another rather satisfying accomplishment reserved only for pipe smoking... nobody ever had to 'figure out' how to smoke a cigar, once you get the hang of it in general... but I digress). The bowl is way too deep to just load up to the top. Too long a smoke for me and the pipe doesn't smoke dry enough for that. Trick is to start with a musketball as it has plenty of room for a huge air gap at the bottom. It's the ideal chamber for musketballing. Smokes beautifully that way even with pretty moist tobacco and finishes dry at the bottom. Another pipe conquered. Time to start shopping for a new one! :D

I too am a big fan of the musket ball technique. I smoked a fair bit of G&H Bright Flake (lovely, still on my to do list to buy a box as a treat for myself before I call the cellar good) in a MM country gent that way, delish, cool, dry smoke and can smoke up every last bit more of less with no tarry dottle.

G&H, Bright CR Flake in a Savinelli, sand blast billiard alongside a New Holland, Incorrigible sour ale
This is a nice combination. I like how these sour ales and gose beers compliment a Virginia - especially a light one.
I can't do this blend without something to reset the palate every once in a while; it's just too light. However, with the right drink it's quite nice.

I haven't smoked a decent Va-Per in quite a while. IDK why. I had a bowl of PS Lux Navy Flake a while back but it was still very young. I just don't see the magic in LNF unless it's been squirreled away for a few years. I may have to bust out a tin of H&H Frenchy's Sunzabiches or AJ's Va-Per. Those two always scratch the Va-Per itch for me and I have plenty of each. I also have a stash of G&H Louisiana Flake, SG St. James Flake, and PS Bullseye Flake, and even some C&D Night Train. ...so I have a few to choose from. :D :D Oh, and let's not forget H&H Anni Kake! I have that too. So many Va-Pers... so little time... :pipe:

Working on a chaw of G&H SRT right now. It's pipe tobacco, so that counts as a 'smoke' right?

On my last order from SmokingPipes, I got a 50g tin of Hamborger Veermaster to come along for the free ride. I've known of this Virginia for years, but hadn't tried it until now. The round tin is a bit smaller in diameter than most, and a bit taller. Inside, there's a single disorderly pile of irregular flakes (which tend to adhere to each other).

It's untopped, mild, and quite tasty, but I have other Virginias that fit that general description. HV does have a different flavor than any of them though. I'll have to have a few more fills before I decide whether or not to order more.

The Pirate Kake is most excellent! P&C gave me a half ounce plug of it once with one of my orders - liked it so much I turned around and ordered a 1# slab of it. I've gotten some aged HV in a sampler before. I must say I fail to find the magic, notwithstanding the many pipers who love this stuff. Like all Dan tobaccos, it's rather precious price-wise. For the money, I find I far prefer FVF, the HV being too mild for my tastes... and by mild I mean 'light in flavor'. I don't smoke for nicotine.

That may indeed be true. When I popped the tin and had my first fill, I was disappointed by Hamborger Veermaster. Didn't seem to have much flavor, and I didn't like what little flavor there was. After several weeks I tried one more fill to decide whether or not to toss the tin. And, by golly, it was excellent.

Some two year old G&H Rum Flake in a Savinelli Roma 626.

Yuk! I hate that.
That's why I stored my stash of Rum Flake for a year or two in a mason jar with the lid disk upside down. Works wonders to get rid of that awful perfume. I do that with a lot of G&H blends.

Had a big bowl of Bob's Square Cut last night hanging out with a friend. This bag was so old when I got it that it was yellowed. Not much old people smell left in this one.

-edit-

Rubbed out a delightful combination of Bob's Square Cut along with a couple coins of Sweet Rum Twist. Loaded it all into a deeply bent (unusual for me) sandblast billiard from NeverBend a while back. This mix is hitting all the right notes for me right now. Shame that if I mix up the same concoction tomorrow it probably won't... but I will enjoy this and let tomorrow worry about itself.

Well, rope tobacco is an acquired taste, let's just say that. I have a couple commercial ropes and some homemade. Every now and again I'll get a hankering for some, but it's certainly not an everyday smoke.

When you make a twist, it does come out looking like a noose, or a nicely-coiled turd :)

Speaking only for myself, I enjoy the ropes and twists as much or as little as any other types I smoke. I like the variety more than I do any particular type of tobac. I don't smoke every day; it's been 3 days since I last had a bowl so I guess you'd say I don't like any tobacco as an every day smoke :p

G&H Black Twist Sliced with a couple splinters of H&H Anniversary Flake sneaked right down the center of the bowl. Don't ask me how I did it, suffice it to say it wasn't easy. Black twist sounded good but I wanted to tone down the strength a bit as well as mitigate the oily flavor. Didn't really think it'd make much of a taste difference but the Anni Flake has given the bowl a nice sweetness and a faint, fruity flavor. It's pretty good. It's got pepper in spades too, but not as much as D&R Picayune; that stuff has pepper in spades, clubs, hearts and diamonds.

Puffing Solani 779, English Luxury Mixture. This is just durned good tobacco. All aspects -- mild, tasty, packs easily, burns good. Can't say about room note; some folks don't like that aroma of Latakia -- even Syrian Latakia.

I just opened my second tin of Hamborger Veermaster. In the first tin, the flakes tended to adhere to each other. In this tin, they're darned near one solid block. Had to scrape some out with my thumbnail. Still mild and tasty though.

The first fill from the first tin tasted weak and unpleasant, but I guess I was just having a bad day -- the first fill from this tin is excellent.

Time to buy a case of Mason jars?

I actually have two. I just pulled everything together from the different places I had them stashed to keep track and re-label the jars and realized just how much I had. Now I need some way to not have them split all over the basement.

I was really good. 5100 is tasty but I find it a bit monochromatic and weak in the flavor department. (Especially for the 50-odd bucks they want for a pound of it, but I digress) I added the Black Twist to cure that. At first light, the bowl tasted like 5100 with just a wee hint of 'something else'. As the bowl burned down, it tasted more and more like the Black Twist, although not nearly as strong and oily. It also burned a lot better than BTS ever does.

I find this is typical with strong/weak combinations like this; you taste the weaker tobacco up front (probably because there's more of it) and the stronger of the two comes on more and more as the bowl progresses, as if the smoke from the more assertive leaf tends to soak into the weaker of the two as the bowl burns down.

Puffing Wessex Classic Virginia as the first-ever fill in my Luciano squat bulldog. Taste? Well, it's a brand new pipe... Still, not too bad. The pipe was made in 2013, so the briar has had a few years to air out. The pipe feels good in hand, and it has an easy draw -- credit to its broad, shallow chamber for that. Glad that I bought it.

A review huh? Well after the "charring Light" and a quick tamp it's like sucking air thru a rock. The taste
was very "earthy" with no hint of "Spice".There was a noticable lack of "citrusy" tang, and it reminded
me mostly of burning wood. The smoke was acrid and un-delicious.Definately NOT an all day smoke, the nic hit
was extremely mild though.I believe every Lush should try this at some time in their stupor.I give it a

Anyway, I decided to try a bowl of it last night, rubbed out and loaded into a Barling TVF billiard.

Sweet and grassy and a bit chemical tasting is what came to mind - don't really care for whatever they've topped this with. Not a big deal really since I don't intend to smoke much of this for at least a couple years. Hopefully by then the topping will have faded to almost nothing and the virginias will have deepened in flavor. One can hope...

I'm not sure yet if I want a box strictly based on how often I smoke. I only smoke 3-4 times a week most weeks, so a 1lb box would last the better part of a year if I smoked that and only that.

But yes, smoking pipes has ODF and a few other MacBaren flakes for $58 and some change per box.

Last week,I was gifted a sample of 1970's Borkum Riff.
Well this is the first pipe I've loaded in just over a week,
so I thought I'ld give it a try.Not sure what blend it started
out as,whiskey, bourbon,or rum but the toppings seem to have
evaporated. It was a very dry, slightly peppery burly forward
taste. Couldn't pick out and citrusy or smoky virginias.Seems
to be it would make a nice filler for an overly sweet aromatic.
I used my Middletonian for this smoke and chased
it with coffee.

I've had several days that nothing tasted right. That's when I take a break and kind of
let things reset.Unfortunately I've also been known to do that with food, really pisses
off the Mrs when all I want is buttered bread and milk for days at a time. But I always

Had a real sweet tooth today for some reason so today is a bowl of C&D Dark chocolate. This is smoked in a MM Ozark Hardwood my wife bought me when I first started with the pipe.

It is super moist, to the point of staining my fingers when loading the pipe. Its either the topping / casing or straight pg. Either way it burns surprisingly well and leaves a nice, creamy chocolate taste. No bite either, even if I puff to the point it crackles like a camp fire.

I would not smoke this all the time but it certainly filled the role of something sweet today.

That kinda sucks Tab.

McClelland #2010 (just received today) in a 1940s Barling Ye Olde Wood #251. 'The Machine', smooth taper billiard with Dr. Brown's Diet Black Cherry.

I gave the Barling #251s the sobriquet (The Machine) and I put them on a pedestal because they represent to me the epitome of the hand-made pipe makers art. I rarely smoke them now but I noticed that this one developed a hairline crack across the rim that doesn't affect the smoke but it reduces its value. Excellent smoke that rounded the fresh McClelland nicely.

oh there are lots imo... Just a few that come to mind: HH Old Dark Fired, Sam Gawith Chocolate Flake (much better than BCF I think), Rattray's Red Rapparee, Hearth & Home Larry's blend, Hearth & Home AJ's VaPer... all very nice blends that you don't hear about much anymore. If you like Va flakes, there's Newminster 400 and Peter Stokkebye Navy flake - those are both pretty cheap and with a couple years on them, very fine smokes. Both can be a little bitey for me fresh but I'm sensitive to tongue bite.

Oh, another one is G&H Black Cherry twist. Not your typical cherry aromatic (because we all know those are evil) This is like Happy Bogie with a hint of cherry in the background. Makes a great chew too. Imo it's second in line behind SRT

Tab, I fear your experience is what other clubs face, not enough new smokers to replace the departed.

Sneaked another bowl of the McClelland #2010 in a 1988 Barling sandblast taper billiard w/sterling band.

I wrote about this pipe when I bought it on eBay (~$95) a couple of years ago. Apologies, can't find the pictures I had and used in that post. Huge billiard with hand-cut cumberland type vulcanite bit. The band is L&JS (Les Wood - Ferndown). I have questions about whether this pipe was made at Ashton or Ferndown but no question that it was turned by Frank Lincoln as top pipe craftsmen's work is like a thumbprint and he worked with both companies after he was made 'redundant' in the early 1980s when Dunhill purged their remaining established (and best) craftsmen like Bill Taylor, Ken Lowe, Bernie Knighton and Frank Lincoln who was one of the most accomplished bowl turners I've ever encountered.

I sent pictures to Dave Field who said that Ashton (Bill Taylor) never made pipes under the Barling name but Dave mentioned that Bill wasn't always forthcoming with some of his business dealings. 1988 would put this pipe just before Ferndowns started to appear in numbers and the band was theirs. Both had access to and used cumberland rod vulcanite. Not sure when but Frank and Billy have both passed. Perhaps one day I'll run into Les and he might be able to shed some light but I'm content with a pipe that I think of as a Frank Lincoln Barling that is essentially a giant Dunhill in pedigree and practice. Most impressive, huge and beautifully proportioned pipe that's special and ironic that it has the best qualities of Dunhill, marked as Barling and a throwback 30 years to the latter's quality.
