Sounds like a winning combination. I've never met a navy flake I didn't like and Rum Twist is one fine blend.

I may or may not get in a bowl of SG Rum Flake today: depends on if I make it out to go fishing.

Poor pigeons! Someone reading this will probably call the ASPCA on you. :p

May or may not get in a bowl of SG Chocolate Flake today, again depending on if I make it out fishing this afternoon. Yesterday was a success story (pipe smoking success that is, fish weren't biting) although the gale force wind smoked most of the bowl for me. I think I got like 6 puffs of very hot tobacco before the bowl was empty. Didn't need any relights tho... :pipe:

I like it! The black cherry aspect of it is very subdued and is mostly detected through the sense of smell. This G&H black cherry twist has less detectable flavoring than the sweet coconut or rum twist that I've been smoking over the last week or so. Like every rope that I've smoked, it is very rich in body and nicotine.

I've not tried using it as chaw yet, but have done that with coins cut from cigars in the past. I'd imagine that this twist tobacco would be much more satisfying than cigar coins. Thanks for the tip!

It makes wonderful chaw IMO. That is unless you're accustomed to something full of sugar. The twists are somewhat sweet but they're not soaked with it like OTC dip. I sometimes use cigar caps as chaw for a while but they're not very good. SRT & BCT are far better.

Just finished the last of some Wessex Classic Virginia -- ready to open another tin and put it into a Weck canning jar. I'll also put in a "Hydrostone" humidifier (pink, leaf-shaped). What kind of tobacco is Brown Bogie? Cigar-like?

I didn't really think it was cigar like in flavor, but in mouth feel, yes it is similar. Very robust and bold tasting.
It is a mixture of fire cured burley and Virginias.
It comes in a rope, but it is a rather thin rope, not like the SG Brown No. 4.

It is strong in the nicotine department, but it is manageable. Nothing to be afraid of if you're an experienced smoker.
Wouldn't really recommend it to someone new to smoking.

Now puffing Fribourg & Treyer Blackjack that I just received in a SmokingPipes order. I use to smoke this stuff years ago, but it fell off my radar screen. SmokingPipes says that it's a red Virginia, but strawberry blonde is closer to the mark. Its tin note is hay-like. And yes, I know what hay smells like. I spent many hours playing in the haylofts of my dad and uncle when I was a kid. And even doing a little work -- breaking bales, and forking hay down to the stanchion.

This is a very fine tobacco. Mostly rubbed out, no topping, and nothing but sweet Virginia in that tin. And nobody is going to complain that it needs drying time -- it's ready to go right out of the tin.

Puffing my first-ever fill of Solani 763, White & Black. It's composed of Virginia, Black Cavendish, and Syrian Latakia. Very tasty, it is. I don't smoke aromatics, and I can't remember the last time that I smoked any tobacco with a Cavendish component. 763 is certainly not an aromatic, but it's a nice change-up. I'd swear that it has a bit of a salty flavor. OK by me -- I love salt.

Speaking of tasty, I made a durned good sandwich for lunch today. A thick hunk of braunschweiger on baked-in-Germany Westphalian pumpernickel. Plus sliced red onion, mustard, and freshly ground black pepper. Burp.

Ha! About time you broke your rotation and mixed in a little variety! :) Now we need to get you a little Sweet Rum Twist to shake things up even more :D

It's all about variety, imo. Even if a particular blend doesn't strike me as particularly delicious, I still appreciate the change of pace.

Well, I can't really say anything. I've corrupted my brother a while back. My dad used to smoke a pipe (Mixture 79 even) but doesn't like any tobacco of any kind anymore and I'm not one to push it on anyone. Given the Mixture 79, go figure why he quit.

I'm A-Bing two Solani ready rubbed Latakia mixtures: 779, English Luxury Mixture, and 763, White & Black.

779: Virginia, Syrian Latakia, and Oriental. Mostly rubbed out.

763: Virginia, Syrian Latakia, and Black Cavendish. Partially rubbed out, but more chunks than the 779.

Both are tasty, and a nice change up for a mostly Virginia/VaPer guy like me, but after one A-B cycle, I'm liking the 763 better. The Black Cavendish gives it a very mellow flavor. English Cavendish, I think, as there's no vanilla or berry flavoring.

But I'll do several more A-B tests before declaring a winner.

The "Black" comes from the tobaccos, all of which are dark. The "White" comes from ... ah ... Comes from the tin label, which has quite a bit of white.

FYI, this is a very nice combination; makes the tea taste sweet. However, it's just sun-brewed, Lipton tea brewed in a 2 quart mason jar with a sprig of fresh mint. Sipping it alongside the L.F. I sent it off to Walker Pipe Repair a few years back because it was bored off center. When you said it was flakes, I knew that what I have is the wrong blend. Got it from a friend and he must have had the labeling on the bags mixed up. I found the LNF a bit bitey and sharp fresh but very nice after a year or so. I've cellared a bunch of it. Only one I haven't tried is LTF. I read several reviews and the consensus seemed to be it was quite mild tasting; more so than the other two. Mild ain't my thing so I never ordered any.

Went over to a friend's house last night to smoke pipes, drink beer and play games. He is relatively new to pipe smoking but is a fast learner. Smoked a bowl of Tilbury in an Albert John billiard and then had a bowl of 2016 Christmas Cheer in a Savinelli Silver billiard. I was really impressed by the Esoterica Tilbury that he had. The Christmas Cheer is excellent as well. We were drinking a 12-pack sampler of Hoppy beers brewed by Terrapin.

Dang-it John, you really "threw me" with this "Red and Black" tobacco; I had never heard of it. I had only really explored tin tobaccos last year. It seems that McClelland has come up with a very good idea resulting in a tasty tobacco.:piper: I was glad that Paul (Cool Breeze) also liked this blend. I have put "Red and Black" at the top of my list when I order more cigars and tobacco in the fall. SRT has got to be their best twist. Tasty and versitile; makes as good a chew as it does a smoke. Prolly would make a good snuff too if you pulverized it but I'm not into that - don't plan to be either.

They always whup my tongue when they're fresh. I jar them up for a year or two before I even try to smoke them. Seems they sweeten up and lose a lot of the attitude after sitting in a corner for a while.

I often mix and match tobaccos. Mostly it's because I have a bit left over from something I left out to dry but didn't all fit in the bowl. So I just mix that with whatever sounded good to smoke next. Sometimes it's 'meh' and sometimes it's really good... and sometimes it's good or bad just because of the way the blend hits me on a given day. I know this because I've duplicated a mix that I thought was fantastic one day only to find that a couple days later it hit me as OK at best. I do know I generally don't like virginias mixed with burley but once in a while even that combo surprises me.

I might go for something mild later on. Haven't been feeling 100% lately and tobacco hasn't sounded good at all. We'll see I guess...

Had a bowl of SG, Chocolate Flake and a small refill of G&H Rum Twist while executing some motorboatery on the river yesterday. Beautiful trip I must say and couldn't ask for nicer weather.

Rabbit trail alert: For some reason, most often times I think I would like a nice cigar, I go looking thru my humidors to find something the right size, wrapper, strength and age to smoke... and I end up smoking a pipe.

MOAR rabbit trail: During my travels, I happened upon a decent gent smoking a nice, bent Peterson. Figured he must be of quality stock (after all, most pipers usually are :p ...except for the hipsters) and yes, he turned out to be as I expected and so we chatted about pipes and tobaccos for a bit. I don't care for Petersons for the most part; I don't like the 'system' because it's a PIA to clean and I've never seen one that would pass a pipe cleaner - which is a royal pain if you get a plugged draught hole. I also hate that P-lip thingy... None-the-less, they are quality pipes and there are a few straight, non-system, fishtail, Peterson pipes out there with military or spigot mounts and I might just HAVE to have one of those someday...

And now, back to your regularly scheduled programming...

Had a bowl of G&H, Rum Flake last night in a short Baraccini 'old Shenandoah' stack poker.

FWIW, I figured out how to smoke this pipe (another rather satisfying accomplishment reserved only for pipe smoking... nobody ever had to 'figure out' how to smoke a cigar, once you get the hang of it in general... but I digress). The bowl is way too deep to just load up to the top. Too long a smoke for me and the pipe doesn't smoke dry enough for that. Trick is to start with a musketball as it has plenty of room for a huge air gap at the bottom. It's the ideal chamber for musketballing. Smokes beautifully that way even with pretty moist tobacco and finishes dry at the bottom. Another pipe conquered. Time to start shopping for a new one! :D
